Team Report

as of Sunday, December 23, 2007 2:02 PM.

(Sports Network) - To say that Alexander Ovechkin is the centerpiece of the Washington Capitals would be an enormous understatement. To declare that he is the only player on the club would actually be closer to the truth.

Once again the Capitals don't have a whole lot else other than their Russian superstar and the lack of depth is threatening to end Washington's playoff hopes before they even began.

The Capitals were not picked by many folks to make the postseason this year, but some thought Ovechkin's maturation would make Washington a better team. Instead, Washington is last in the conference with 30 points and looks to be headed for a fourth straight season without a playoff berth.

The problem is that Ovechkin is called upon to shoulder too much of the scoring load. In fact, the superstar has accounted for 27-percent of his team's goals this year or 25 of Washington's 92 tallies. The next closest goal scorer on the Capitals is Mike Green, who has eight goals -- 17 less than Ovechkin.

The offseason addition of Michael Nylander has given the Caps a natural playmaking center, but what Washington really needs is another goal-scorer.

Since, the Capitals are not likely to make a trade for a proven scorer, the team seems content to just wait for the draft to provide one. It all adds up to a less than ideal time to be a hockey fan in the nation's capital.

The Capitals are currently in the midst of a three-game losing streak and will next play on Wednesday night against visiting Tampa Bay.

And he's not even eligible for the NHL Entry Draft - where he's projected to easily go No. 1 - until 2009.

Quote of the Day

“No. I never enjoy going to Toronto, really. So all that’ll do is motivate me to play better, probably. “Why? Let’s see. ... Because I don’t enjoy hockey-obsessed Canadians. The exchange is not very good right now. And it’s going to cost me a lot of money in tickets for people I don’t even like. “How’s that for an answer? Would you like me to go on? Nah, I think that’s probably enough.”

- Rangers' forward Sean Avery obviously not looking forward to returning to play in Toronto on Saturday.

Stat of the Day

Sharks goaltender Evgeni Nabokov made his 37th straight start. He is the only goaltender in the NHL to have started each of his team's games this season.
