Special Olympics offers training and competition opportunities in 30 Olympic-type sports for athletes 8 years or older.  For children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7, Special Olympics provides a Young Athletes Program. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience. Individual donors, corporate partners and many others make it possible for Special Olympics to offer children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy through participation in the program.

Director, Corporate Partnerships

Reports to:  Vice President, Corporate Partnerships 
Location: This position is located in Washington, DC.
Department: Development

Position Summary: The Director of Corporate Partnerships will report to the Vice President of Corporate Partnerships and is responsible for fundraising from corporate foundations and sports associations to support Special Olympics.

Primary Responsibilities:
The Director of Corporate Partnerships will initiate and develop revenue-generating relationships with corporations, corporate foundations and associations whose interests intersect with Special Olympics' programming areas, and is responsible for program fundraising and stewardship.

  • Report to Vice President, Corporate Partnerships
  • Overall: Responsible for helping to secure new and/or upsell existing global and multi-national partnerships
    • Identify/track sponsorship prospects and existing relationships for upselling
    • Conduct research internally (e.g., track size and scope of current US Programs and/or regional relationships that have potential to expand nationally, internationally or globally
    • Prepare sales or renewal presentations for the strongest top-tier prospects
    • Provide support for as well as participate in collaborative sales sessions with prospective top-tier partners and/or their agencies
    • Provide sales support to regions and U.S. Programs with partnerships that have the potential to grow country-wide, region-wide or internationally. Sales support includes targeted research, tailored
    • Provide support for as well as conduct negotiations and prepare agreements for new relationships as well as renewal on existing relationships

 

Director of Organizational Development, Special Olympics North America (SONA)

Reports to:  Managing Director, North America
Location: Home-based office with approximately 30 to 40% travel to Special Olympics Programs and events in North America.

Position Summary: The Director of Organizational Development will have the responsibility to partner with SONA Programs within a specific assigned territory within the SONA region to assess, advise, consult and assist in all aspects of program development. They will identify needs and opportunities for Special Olympics initiatives and services and advise leadership on potential improvements, disseminate and collect best practices and develop and create new activities to support growth, as part of each Program’s strategic planning process. These activities may include but are not limited to recruitment/retention of athletes and volunteers, event management, all areas of fundraising and financial planning He/she will provide leadership, training, service and support to insure a strong understanding and commitment by Programs to the Special Olympics General Rules, Strategic Plan and Priorities of the Special Olympics Movement. He/she will be the first line of authority and communication from SOI/ SONA to assigned Programs to proactively solve the wide range of challenges that affect Programs and the Movement on a day to day basis. It is expected that the Director of Organization Development will develop several areas of expertise that can be deployed anywhere in the Movement.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop outstanding relationships with the Program CEO and Board Chair of the assigned territories to ensure optimal engagement and a sense of partnership. Communicate with these individuals on a regular basis to insure that SONA/ SOI have a current understanding of Program issues, Program achievements and an understanding of regional trends.
  • Seek additional counsel from Managing Director and SOI/ SONA staff whenever necessary to proactively support the Program and help foster interaction across constituencies.
  • Customize SOI curriculum, materials and templates to assist Programs with annual planning and evaluation.
  • Support implementation and on-going utilization of the PDS (Program Development System) with focus on APS and PIP to develop performance and accountability goals for initiatives, services, events and recruitment.
  • Support planning and facilitation of orientation and training of new CEOs and Board Chairs. Collaboratively develop a succession plan for staff and board.
  • Develop and provide expertise in specific SOI areas including, but not limited to inclusion, governance, board development, outreach strategies, government relations and fundraising.
  • Work with SOI Chief Legal Officer and Managing Director on resolving all compliance issues related to accreditation and the General Rules.
  • Serve as a key resource for Programs to identify and apply for grants, collaborative fundraising opportunities and government funding.

Qualifications Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 8 years of related experience with a non-profit organization or association with strong grass roots and/or constituent based relationship or focus on organizational development, public or social policy.
  • Extensive experience managing and leading teams.
  • Experience in one of the following: service on a non-profit board; board /staff management and leadership development; board/staff evaluation; creating, facilitating and managing strategic planning; or experience in developing and writing cases for support.
  • Preferred: through knowledge and leadership experience with the Special Olympics Movement.
  • Ability to be creative in designing programs and exacting in their execution.
  • Excellent leadership, negotiating and consensus building skills.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain trust with a wide array of clients and staff
  • Appreciation and respect for diversity.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and meet multiple, competing responsibilities and to lead others
  • Ability to work in a fast paced and changing environment

Description:

The Vice President of Major Gifts is responsible for the planning, implementation, and management of the Special Olympics major giving program.  This position requires close coordination with the Office of the President, Office of the Chairman, senior Special Olympics headquarters staff, Board of Directors, and other national, regional and Program staff and volunteers in the identification and solicitation of Special Olympics' major individual and foundation prospects.

Primary Responsibilities:

S/he works closely with Corporate Partnerships, Communications, World Games, regional fundraising teams, and Development staff across the movement and especially with the Chief Development Officer to ensure the organization’s private fundraising needs are met.  This person also looks for the link between private and public revenue and leverage opportunities and works with Finance to forecast revenue for planning, on budgeting, and to track progress toward goals.  S/he will supervise a team of between two and four individuals.

This position requires a high level of competency in verbal and written communications; familiarity with and understanding of the U.S. foundation community; and a sense for the type of individual who may have an affinity to the mission.  S/he must have a comfort with working with high net worth individuals.

Qualifications Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and eight years experience in major gift fundraising in a nonprofit environment
  • Successful experience in asking for and closing gifts or sales and building and maintaining long-term relationships with donors or clients
  • Successful experience in managing multiple projects and developing strategies
  • Knowledge of fundraising principles and practices
  • Ability to interact successfully with people at all levels of wealth, business and industry, as well as with colleagues representing a variety of points of view
  • Supervisory experience, including ability to motivate, lead, set objectives and manage performance
  • Ability to work with a communications team to produce case materials and brochures that support a major gifts fundraising effort or campaign
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent communications skills

Director, Promotions and Marketing

Description:

he Director of Promotions and Marketing will report to the Vice President of Corporate Partnerships and is responsible for the management of global and national sponsor accounts, as well as developing programs to leverage sponsors’ activation budgets through retail, online and other media with a revenue generating goal. The Director of Promotions and Marketing will also manage the sponsorship documentation and valuation process; act as primary contact for third party research companies; and conduct research on current sponsors and prospects.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Overall: Responsible for the management, activation and growth of global/multinational and select national partnerships
  • Serve as Primary Liaison to Special Olympic Corporate Partners
  • Serve as the Special Olympics liaison for activation and marketing/communications/promotional services for top-tier global/multi-national and select national partnerships
  • Research, develop, and implement multi-state/national fundraising and promotional projects, e.g., creating fundraising strategies templates for turnkey fundraising events, etc.
  • Develop programs to leverage sponsors’ activation budgets through retail, online and other media using tools such as "Be a fan" and "Brand Special"
  • Provide servicing of accounts, acting as primary point person for day-to-day communication
  • Collect and manage all required documentation and materials (e.g., collateral, POP, show copies, national PR campaigns, etc.)

Qualifications Required:

  • Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree preferred
  • Seven years of account management and servicing required; sponsorship analysis experience preferred
  • Sport and/or entertainment event experience preferred
  • Strong MS Outlook, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint and computer system skills
  • Ability to develop relationships and work well with others in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Takes initiative and ability to manage multiple projects with strong follow-through
  • Detail oriented with strong organizational skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience with Special Olympics programs and/or administration helpful
