[K-Drama Hub (News/Ratings/Info)] Updated July 31

(Posted In Asia TV Trailer Alert )

khub.jpgKorean TV Dramas are experiencing some of the most important changes in history, with film companies investing or even producing on TV, film directors at the helm of Dramas, and Drama companies producing films. And, as always, the exchange of talent between the two media is so significant that avoiding the industry would be criminal for anyone truly interested in Korean Cinema. Popular trends found in films often start on TV, and it's after making it big on TV that many stars of the big screen are created, with stories like Bae Yong-Joon, Choi Ji-Woo, Song Hye-Gyo and many, many more a perfect example. The industry has matured enough to need its own little corner on Twitch, and here it is.

In this new feature -- updated DAILY -- you'll find everything you need to know about K-Dramas: from ratings of 90% of the TV Dramas airing right now going back to all the shows completed in 2006 for the stats fiends, to the latest news about casting and future productions.

Fantastic news for Sageuk fans. Jung Hyung-Soo might be busy until February with the wonderful 주몽 (Jumong), but he already revealed plans for his next work, which will still be a Sageuk. Mixing tropes from US shows like CSI and ER with a Goryeo setting, 벽란도 (Byeokrando) will tell the story of a forensics investigation team trying to solve all the murders and strange accidents in the famous city. The show, entitled after a port city in the Goryeo Dynasty playing a sort of gateway to then capital Gaeseong, will start airing from the second half of 2007. [DC Inside - 7/31]

You know, when I say the world is coming to a quick end, sometimes it feels like I'm not joking. DSP Entertainment just announced they sold a package of Dramas to 8 Asian countries (Japan, China, Hong Kong, The Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Taiwan). Now that's nothing out of the ordinary, and one of the Dramas they sold, SBS' 마이걸 (My Girl) kind of deserves a little traveling -- it has big flaws, but it's still fun, kind of. But then, oh mama, those 8 countries will enjoy Lee Hyo-Ri's Drama debut 세잎클로버 (Three Leaf Clover) as well. Put in SBS and DSP' shoes I'd probably hide the fact I was even involved with such a mess, but hey, there's no accounting for taste, and there's no taste in accounting, especially when we deal with Korean Wave exports. But wait, Japan is also interested in the Macaroni Sageuk 연개소문 (Yeon Gaesomun), so not all hope is lost. DSP's new project will be the Shin Eun-Kyung Drama 열혈신부 (The Passionate Bride) later this year. [MSN News - 7/27]

Times are changing... welcome to the era of K-Dramas airing trailers, on the big screen. SBS' Macaroni Sageuk 연개소문 (Yeon Gaesomun) has become the first ever Korean Drama to air promotion in selected CGV theaters, starting from last July 13. I expect this to become a trend, as budgets are increasing, and producers need more venues to promote their shows. [MSN News - 7/26]

There have been many new developments in Korean Dramas over the last year, but here's something completely new, once again: for the first time ever, a K-Drama will remake an American film. The Drama is MBC's upcoming 환상의 커풀 (Fantasy Couple), written by the Hong sisters of 마이걸 (My Girl), which will be a remake of a 1987 Hollywood film called Overboard, with Kurt Russel and Goldie Hawn. The story of the original sounds like vintage Hong Sisters: a 'bitchy' woman hires a carpenter from the countryside to work on her yacht, but problems emerge between the two (being a Korean Drama, expect class divide to pop out here), the man is left without pay and she sets sail. Little problem? She goes overboard, and completely loses her memory. What does the guy do, to get back his money? He makes the woman believe she's actually his wife. Producers 8Peaks already bought remake rights, after admitting remaking a recent film would be expensive, and of course there will be a few small changes to adapt to 'Korean sentiments'. Nothing set in stone, but it seems like Ji Jin-Hee and Kim Hyun-Joo will be the leading couple. [DC Inside - 7/26]

Olive9 of 주몽 (Jumong) and the upcoming 황진이 (Hwang Jin-Yi) keeps growing in importance. The company just signed a contract with PD Park Chan-Hong of 부활 (Rebirth), which means his next project (slated for early next year, working once again with Kim Ji-Woo) will be under Olive9's wing. [MSN News - 7/25]

One of the guilty pleasures of 2005 is making a return. LK (Lee Seon-Mi/Kim Gi-Ho)'s 신입사원 (Super Rookie) is in fact getting an 'unofficial' second Season [writers are claiming it's not, but the plot is essentially the same], and its start is just a little over a month away. At a recent fan meeting, Shin Sung-Woo announced he's been cast in 무적의 낙하산 요원 (The Masters of String Pulling), which will start shooting on August 15 and air from September 6. By the looks of things, this might end up being the follow up to SBS' 돌아와요 순애씨 (Soon-Ae, Please Come Back), although nothing is confirmed. Also part of the cast will be Han Ji-Min, last seen in the horrible 위대한 유산 (Kindergarten Love), and Ha Seok-Jin of 방과후 옥상 (See You After School). [DC Inside - 7/24, Naver News - 7/24]

Bad news on the 썸데이 (Someday) front. One of the most promising Dramas of late 2006 has gone from MBC to Cable, which in many ways means there'll be less chances to see it. Producers Yellow Film signed a contract with cable Channel OCN to broadcast the 16 Episodes live action/animation hybrid, starring Bae Doo-Na, Kim Min-Joon, Oh Yoon-Ah, Lee Jin-Wook and more. This is the first time a major Drama moves to Cable, and while OCN is one of the biggest Cable channels in Korea when it comes to penetration and popularity, of course we're not dealing with network TV. The show will air from November every Saturday and Sunday on OCN, and while there's a very good chance it'll make it to DVD later, those hoping to see the show Live or through Downloads should pretty much give up hope. [DC Inside - 7/24]

Back last year we reported little snippets about one of Choi Wan-Gyu's new Project Dramas, the 사전제작 (100% Pre-Broadcast Shoot), Season-based 에어 시티 (Air City). We knew only a few things about it: that it would air Season 1 on MBC starting from the 2006 Winter season; that it would feature the full roster of Choi's new company, including Choi and Jung Hyung-Soo of 주몽 (Jumong), Jung Sung-Joo of 장미와 콩나물 (Roses & Beansprouts), Kim Young-Hyun of 대장금 (Dae Jang Geum) and 서동요 (The Ballad of Seo Dong), Jung Jin-Ok of 해신 (Emperor of the Sea) and more. And, finally, that it would be produced by Yoo Cheol-Yong of 올인 (All In).

What we didn't know was who would star in it. Now we know at least one of them, or at least there's a very strong possibility it'll be one of them. Go So-Young of 아파트 (Apartment) is apparently strongly considering the offer to star in the first 20 Episodes of the show, which would mean a return to TV after 8 years, to be precise 1998's MBC Drama 추억 (Memories). That's confirmed, but for news a little more on the 'rumour' side of things, it seems that Lee Jung-Jae, Won Bin and Jang Dong-Gun are interested in the show, and one or two of them mgiht actually end up starring in it. The synopsis for this first season was sent to many top stars, including Kwon Sang-Woo, Lee Byung-Heon, Choi Ji-Woo, Eric Moon, Ha Ji-Won, Park Yong-Woo, Lee Young-Ae and many more, so we'll get to know pretty soon who will be chosen. [DC Inside - 7/23]

Again Choi Wan-Gyu related news. As we announced months ago in the news, Choi has been preparing a sequel to his classic 1994 Drama 종합병원 (General Hospital), but the key was whether he'd be able to get the original cast back. Well... he just did. Lee Jae-Ryong, Shin Eun-Kyung and even Jeon Do-Yeon will in fact star in 종합병원 2 (General Hospital 2). The show, produced by Choi's aStory and written by Choi himself, will broadcast next March 2007 on MBC. Lee will be the lead, while Shin and Jeon will appear in supporting roles. Sadly it looks like Jeon Gwang-Ryeol won't make it, as Choi wants to go the Pre-Broadcast way, and Jeon will be busy with 주몽 (Jumong) until early next year. The story picks up 10 years after Part 1 ended, with Lee Jae-Ryong and Shin Eun-Kyung going from residents to full fledged specialist. And viewers of that masterpiece that was the original are probably jumping on their seat right about now. Myself included. [DC Inside - 7/23]

Before even completing its shoot, 프리즈 (Freeze) is already in the headlines. The Drama, written by Lee Jin-Woo and Produced by Jung Jae-Hoon, has sold broadcast rights to Japan for 150 Million Yen (1.2 Billion Won), said producers Yellow Films today. The 5 Episodes show is a 사전제작 (100% Pre-Broadcast Shoot) starring Lee Seo-Jin and Park Han-Byeol, and features a love story between a vampire and a human. [MSN News - 7/22]

As I pretty much flunked all the ratings prediction and I was tired of the little ratings in our previous K-Drama Previews, here's a simpler rating method: The Fire Meter! Stop laughing...

On Fire: Think 주몽 (Jumong), 신돈 (Shin Don) and 부활 (Rebirth) Level [EXCELLENT]
Hot: Think 해신 (Emperor of the Sea) or 내 이름은 김삼순 (My Lovely Sam-Soon) Level [VERY GOOD]
Warm: Think 신입사원 (Super Rookie) or 옥탑방 고양이 (Attic Cat) Level [GOOD]
Cold: Think 궁 (Princess Hours) Level [AVERAGE]
Siberia: Think... Yoon Seok-Ho? [POOR]

4부작특집드라마 - 4 Episode Special Drama
2006/07/15~ [Airs Every Sat/Sun Nights on MBC]
Choi Yong-Won
With the exception of a few 베스트극장 (Best Theater) specials, the only Miniseries he's been involved with was MBC's 천생연분 (The Perfect Match). I'm not a huge fan of the show, but it doesn't really have to do with production values and/or directing. It was more a fault of the script and some of the leads (Hwang Shin-Hye in particular). But the rest of his work is pretty good, so there shouldn't be much of a problem, especially as this only lasts 4 episodes, and it was a 사전제작 (100% Pre-Broadcast Shoot).
Seo Shin-Hye
I think we're in really good hands. Her last work was the underrated 연애 (Love is a Crazy Thing), and she was also responsible for 고독의 몸부림 칠때 (Sweet Sixties), one of my favourite bittersweet comedies of the last few years. She also adapted Hong Sang-Soo's excellent 돼지가 우물에 빠진 날 (The Day a Pig Fell into the Well) and the surprisingly good 와니와 준하 (Wanee & Junha), so we're dealing with a good writer indeed.
[Cast: Park Shi-Eun, Kim Young-Ho, Ji Su-Won, Lee Se-Chang, Lee Dae-Yeon]
Nothing really stands out, except Lee Dae-Yeon, but we're dealing with pretty good actors. Kim Young-Ho did well in 서동요 (The Ballad of Seo Dong), and can deliver when he's given something good to work with. Lee Se-Chang is quite uneven, but he's also a 네 멋대로 해라 (Ruler of Your Own World) alumni, so I tend to cut him some slack anyway. The real problem are Ji Su-Won, who tends to stick to Daily Dramas and isn't really much of an actress, and Park Shi-Eun, who so far has mostly dealt with pretty face roles. Since the focus is on the investigation, if there isn't good chemistry between Park and Kim, things could slow down considerably. Still, not too bad.
Original outline featured the struggle of a mother to find her kidnapped daughter, but now the focus is on the investigators (Park and Kim) who are trying to catch the culprit. We've seen these stories many times before, but the writer is good enough that it should still be quite watchable.
WEATHER: I couldn't finish it (hell, I couldn't go past a few episodes!), but I'm willing to bet anything will be better than 불꽃놀이 (Fireworks), which this show will follow. Anything. So while Park Shi-Eun won't have two big things to rely on like someone else in the previous Drama, they'll have to create something interesting to go beyond the slightly conventional outline. Still, with the shooting style and the shortness of the show, this one should be fairly entertaining. And even if it ends up sucking, it's just 4 episodes. And it's not Fireworks. That must count for something...

As you've seen in our K-Drama Previews, we got rid of simple ratings or numbers, to focus on... weather. Because Korean Dramas are like weather in the UK. You go out in tank top and no clouds in the sky, and in a couple of hours it's torrential downpours. So to help you navigate the crazy weather of the current K-Drama lineup, here's our panel of... uhhh... K-Drama meteorologists giving you the skinny on the latest shows airing at the moment. This will change pretty often, so check every day. And bring an umbrella, just in case.

Of course the better the weather, the better the Drama is. But trying to decode what that weather 'forecast' means might be as fun (or annoying, ymmv) as reading the rest of the comment. For now we start with yours truly and Cyberman, but we've got many more coming in the next few weeks.

Note: The number between brackets indicates up to which episode we've seen. Since all these will be updated frequently, old 'forecasts' will go into an Archive. And yes, if you're wondering, all this was inspired by Magazine T's wonderful 1060 Polls.

Major Updates - 7/27
- Added Credeisca Report
- Updated 서울 1945 (Seoul 1945), 연개소문 (Yeon Gaesomun), 101번째 프로포즈 (The 101st Proposal), 주몽 (Jumong) Reports [Cyberman] 101번째 프로포즈 (The 101st Proposal) Report [x]

투명인간 최장수 (The Invisible Man) - KBS
Armanigurl [6th] SCORCHING HOT - This drama is beyond watchable IT is freaking awesome. Jaw dropping performances by the leads. By far the best acting performances this year. I know the writer has had some poor projects in the past, but this has got to be the best script written. I think the combination of alzheimers and a marriage breakdown is not unrealistic, in fact i really feel this drama. Two thumbs up!
Cyberman [1st] FRIGID WITH SOME WARM SPOTS - The two leads are doing the very best job they can with a rather poor/unrealistic/annoying script. Maybe they can make this show somehow watchable ... not optimistic so far.

연개소문 (Yeon Gaesomun) - SBS
Cyberman [6th] IT'S RAINING CARDBOARD CHARACTERS!! - Why bother with a script? It's He-man and Skeletor, again. I wonder if Kim Gab Soo is laughing like a mad man in the show because he thinks the script is utter trash. Throw in basic script and off to battle scenes again!! More action less talk. Please give me some intelligent dialogue!
X [2nd] RAINS A LOT, BUT YOU GET USED TO IT - Ahhh... yes, Lee Hwan-Kyung's Macaroni Sageuk are back. Silly Historical Distortion (Yeon Gaesomun did what at Anshi Castle?) I can deal with, the acting going all machismo and hilarious one-liners a little less. STILL, looks like it'll be decent fun in the long run. Think like Django goes to Goguryeo, more or less. The super old-fashioned intro with the 삼족오 (three-legged raven) kicks ass, especially the silly 2 second loop at the end (maybe they ran out of money).

101번째 프로포즈 (The 101st Proposal) - SBS
X [10th] ONE FINE SPRING DAY - Now I know why people don't watch this (Jumong!), but come on. 7%. Even Teletubbies on cable do more than that. Park Sun-Young needs a leading role in a film pronto, she's the most underrated non-veteran actress in Korea right now, more or less. And of course Lee Moon-Shik is wonderful. Some elements of the script are starting to smell a little, but it shouldn't depart for Andromeda like many SBS Dramas usually do.
Cyberman [7th] PRETTY SPRING DAYS WITH SCATTERED CLOUDS - Lee Moon Shik is doing an excellent job while Park Sun Young is oh so charming. Story is a bit of retread but nicely done so far. Supporting cast (especially the young one) are a little weak but they are central anyway. Let's see if this one stays warm.
Armanigurl [1st] CUTE WARM WOOGLY - I really don't know what the story is about because I had to break the first episode up into 3 parts due to my exhaustion. But from what I saw, Lee Moon Shik was awfully cute. I didnt like the "beauty & the beast" theme tho. I might continue this.

열아홉 순정 (Pure 19) - KBS
X [10th] SPRINGTIME: NOT TOO HOT, NOT TOO COLD - I'm watching this on and off as I have no time, but it's watchable, and the great veterans are helping a lot. Gu Hye-Seon is almost unbearably cute (that's a compliment), but then again it doesn't look like it'll get particularly exciting. Your average KBS Daily Drama.
Cyberman [2nd] SUNNY WITH CLEAR SKIES AHEAD - - If you allow yourself to suspend you disbelief for a bit it can be enjoyable. The cast is doing a nice job and the writing isn't bad.

어느 멋진 날 (One Fine Day) - MBC
X [4th] ICE AGE - The nickname the DC Inside Board gave this show, 어느 멋진 발 (One Fine Foot), perfectly describes the show, as they probably wrote it with their feet. It's OK to go heavy on the visuals (Yeah, Sung Yoo-Ri and Lee Yeon-Hee are pretty), but just about everything else is hilariously ridiculous. MBC, let's not waste time with this tripe, even during World Cups...

미스터 굿바이 (Mr. Good-Bye) - KBS2
Cyberman [16th, Completed] WARM HEARTRENDING END - I thought it ended pretty well. There are a few script problems but I've enjoyed it ... especially the way it ended. Not a waste of time.
X [8th] SKIES CLEARING, TEMPERATURE ON THE RISE - Happy to say it is indeed getting better. Details still need to be worked out a lot better, but the characters are starting to emerge from the cardboard, and with a little more intrigue (the hotel subplot is starting to get interesting, sort of) it could turn good. Bold statement coming: I think Oh Yoon-Ah might just turn into a very fine actress. Third time in a row she impresses me.
Armanigurl [3rd] - COLD SHIVER - Ahn Jae Wook and Me have no fate. I feel nothing for his character. Mediocre acting and I'm not impressed with the script. Couldn't care about his hotel, his past, Nor his future. DIE !

주몽 (Jumong - Prince of The Legend) - MBC
Cyberman [19th] MORE SIZZLING DAY IN THE FORECAST - This show is like the opposite of Yeongaesomun; it actually has an intelligent script and interesting plot line without having to rely on over the top action scenes. This show just builds and builds. Stay tuned!!
X [15th] BRING IN THE CALYPSO, TROPICAL HEAT - 신돈 (Shin Don) is on top of the mountain looking pretty confident, but I'd be really surprised if this doesn't end in my 2006 Top 3. The Post-Haemosu era is being handled incredibly well, and Jumong is starting to get rid of his baby teeth.
Armanigurl [1st] STEAMING HOT So TAKE OF ALL 'HIS' CLOTHES - Excellent first episode. Great acting by the veterans. Can't wait to see Song Il Gook.. then it'll really start burning.

진짜 진짜 좋아해 (Love Truly) - MBC
Credeisca [29th] CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE SOUL ON A RAINY DAY - 대장금 (Dae Jang Geum) moments since the 23rd. New haircut for Ryu Jin? Mugwort & garlic transformation for our Bong-Bong couple? Aja, Bong-ki! Aja!
X [22nd] MR. PUTIN'S LEAST FAVOURITE WINTER VACATION SPOT - A modern day 대장금 (Dae Jang Geum)? If Lee Byung-Hoon drank Coke, it'd probably be all over the screen by now.

소문난 칠공주 (7 Princesses) - KBS2
X [20th] WHAT'S WITH ALL THE THUNDERSTORMS? - Moon Young-Nam's worst work in years. Started pretty well, but looks like it's heading to Andromeda pretty fast. Not as bad as 하늘이시여 (Dear Heaven), but still...

사랑과 야망 (Love & Ambition) - SBS
X [35th] GOOD OLE SUNNY DAYS - Took a long, long time to heat up, but we're back to Kim Soo-Hyun land (meaning, good!). Chu Sang-Mi might just end up Best Supporting Actress two years in a row, unless Oh Yeon-Soo has something to say about that.

서울 1945 (Seoul 1945) - KBS1
Cyberman [57th] MORE INSIPID SHOWERS DURING SUNNY DAYS - If I have to watch Han Eun Jung try to cry one more time I think I'm going to get ill. Please lay off the teardrops bottles! If Park Dong Chan's love for Moon Suk Gyung is the most convincing of all the romances, that should tell you something. I am looking foward to the In'Cheon landing and retaking of Seoul, however.
X [55th] MILD CURRENT OF WARM WEATHER COMING FROM THE SAGEUK FRONT, ANNOYING SHOWERS (OF TEARS) IN BETWEEN - The ideas are there, special effects too, but everything else seems lacking. The cast is improving thanks to the veterans, but it's still pretty much a lame duck 시대극 (Period Drama) trying to make an impact with historical events. Still, that 6/25 recreation was SCARY good. Enough to wake me up.
Armanigurl [2nd] IT RAINS AND GETS MUDDY - 1st 2 episodes were really BLAH! Acting was really BAD! Story kept putting me sleep. First 4 episodes of Fashion 70s would have beaten this anytime. Hey! How did u guys get to the 55th episode?? *scratches head*

I promised something other than Sageuk, and I deliver. This might actually be the first Mania Drama ever, from the pen of the super-talented Noh Hee-Kyung: 거짓말 (Lies), starring Lee Sung-Jae, Bae Jong-Ok and Yoo Ho-Jung. I tend to think her later works are much better, but this is still much better than most Dramas out there nowadays. Next week we're turning the clock back another half decade, with one of the most popular Dramas of the early 90s.

Dear x.
Being a non-korean k-drama addict; i have been anxiously waiting for this data bank.
thanks so much for the hard work.

» Posted by llhheerner at May 9, 2006 06:57 AM

X, thanks for the comprehensive list. It's nice to have all the information in one place. By the way, Great Inheritance really sucks ... total garbage. I don't know why Han Ji Min chose such a loser of a project; she was so wonderful in Resurrection. Kim Jae Won, well, he is totally unbelievable as an actor. Still looking forward to Jumong even though it seems that it will be quite stylized.

» Posted by cyberman at May 9, 2006 10:40 AM

You do so much for us K-addicts. How do we thank you enough?

Been out of the loop for a while and I missed most of the last three weeks, but I was wondering why the ratings were so bad. Supporting cast looked great, but I did read Kim Jae-Won was his usual self (bland, monotone and 'killer smile'). Oh well. Not like I was too interested in this.

Jumong will be a sort of 해신 in Goguryeo. Costumes are a little off, and in that case they could have used the old legend about Jumong. But hey, it's Choi Wan-Gyu. I'll take historical distortion if he creates the usual fire of his past works.

» Posted by x at May 9, 2006 06:13 PM

It's great to have you back X! I hope things are looking better for you!

I'm a bit sad this week.. Bad Family is ending. :(
I'll miss that ensemble of great actors and actresses.
I know you talked about Kim Myung Min being casted in Speed, but any news on what Nam Sang Mi will be doing next..? XD

Finally! 101번째 프로포즈 (previously titled My Perfect Girl) will be debuting at the end of the month. I've been waiting for this since it was announced to start in April.

I take a twisted pleasure in the poor ratings for Great Inheritance.. I despise pretty boy actors.

Anyways, thanks for the very comprehensive list of the dramas, especially for all those that are in production.
I sort of miss your voice in these drama write-ups though.. can I suggest a "What To Watch" and "What Not To Watch" segment?? ^^

Thanks again and take care!

» Posted by jahye at May 9, 2006 07:28 PM

Hope 상미양 will take a rest for a couple of months. She's been on TV and the big screen non-stop the last year.

I actually planned to put something like you suggested here, but again the word barrier (get past the 10,000 words and the software starts cutting from the bottom) got in the way once again. I'm barely pushing the limit with this setup, so I'll try to work some way around the positioning to see if it has any effect.

Anyhow, the what to watch or not would be kind of difficult in the next few months, as I'm re-designing my basement and there's the World Cup, so a lot of hours usually spent watching TV will have to go there. Plus the previous 'system' of watching a dozen Dramas at once was too stressing. I'll just watch a few Dramas live (probably all the Sageuk and a few others) and then go full immersion on the others when they're done.

But don't worry. As I said before, I'm working on a DVD-Roundup like format for TV Dramas with shorter reviews, and I'll try to put most of the Dramas there. Don't know if it's an ideal solution or not, but that's the project for now.

» Posted by x at May 9, 2006 07:45 PM

Thank you for reviving this posting. I have been waiting anxiously for the Korean TV Drama ratings as the last one was way back April 15.

I appreciate you giving us info again on the ratings however, I hope you can change the format back to the old one which was on a weekly basis rather than daily. Just a suggestion.

Tnx for your time!

» Posted by M at May 10, 2006 02:53 AM

Sorry this is a bit unrelated, but is it still pretty common for dramas filmed in widescreen/HDTV to get full frame releases? Why is this the case for My Girl? DVD aspect ratio is a pretty considerable selling point for me.

» Posted by Elusive at May 10, 2006 04:55 PM

They did? The Rebirth boxset was listed as 4:3 too, so I wouldn't trust specs too much, unless of course it's been confirmed by those who bought it.

Doubt the 궁 set will be 4:3 too. That would defeat any possible buying purpose.

» Posted by x at May 10, 2006 07:35 PM

Hey X... That's what it says on YesAsia Global and DVDfromKorea. I don't know anyone who's bought it so I can't get a better confirmation than that.

Are you still reviewing this drama? I was surprised to read a while ago that you were planning on reviewing it.

Glad you're back!

» Posted by Elusive at May 10, 2006 07:58 PM

yeah, it's part of the first K-Drama roundup (with Princess Hours, The Special of My Life and a few others).

As for the DVD, you should either ask YesAsia to confirm the aspect ratio, or look around at Naver. Every Korean DVD retailer I've seen list it at 4:3 though.

» Posted by x at May 10, 2006 08:22 PM

I'm disappointed that the ratings for Alone in Love are still in the teens. This is a great drama!

And what has happened to Yang Dong-geun's Dr Gang?

» Posted by thunderbolt at May 16, 2006 11:51 AM

^ It seems Yang Dong Geun fanatics are the only ones watching the drama now, but I'm enjoying it and not just because I like the guy.

You've got to be kidding me about that Go Ah Ra/boyband member drama.. AND Kim Hee Sun is getting more work?
You're right. The world IS ending.

X, do you have any recommendations from the latest dramas that started? (Great Inheritance, Fireworks, Jumong, Smile Again, I'm Going Too, Mr. Goodbye, Pure 19)

» Posted by jahye at May 23, 2006 03:49 PM

the scary thing isn't that they're leading a Drama. They're leading one written by Kim Soo-Hyun. That'd be like Merchant-Ivory writing a romcom with Lindsey Lohan.

Afraid I'm not the best source for judgment on current Dramas now. Been dead busy with work and other things (and frankly I'm not in a great mood, so controlling my Drama watching until at least after the World Cup).

Anyhow, a few words anyway.

Great Inheritance: Waiting for KBS World, but all I've read and heard about it sounds pretty bad. Looks like 지민양 doesn't work as well with comedies. Would be a shame, as the supporting cast looked gold on paper.

Fireworks: Watched a little last week, and looks... uhmm, pathetic is the right word? Han Chae-Young keeps going on about trying to diversify her roles, and then here she pops out of the swimming pool with the camera panning over the two things she has to thank for still working in the industry.

Jumong. FIRE. FIRE. This is amazing stuff. Forget about the historical distortion thing. Yeah, the costumes are a little off base (they look more like stuff from Goryeo), but they're insanely nice (I'd just love to go to sleep with Park Geun-Hyung's robe). Only watched the first two eps, but this might turn out to be Choi Wan-Gyu's best work since Sang Do. Reminds me of the great Sageuk of MBC's glory days, with the same love for storytelling, intelligent character development, breathtaking art direction and good cinematics. I think Shin Don will be hard to beat this year, simply because it's too audacious and badass (best writing of the last few years, period. And the acting's great), but this comes pretty close. Must watch.

Pure 19 has a nice cast, but then again people are already saying it's more of the same. Mr. Goodbye... hhmmm. I like Ahn Jae-Wook and I lose all the very little critical virtues I have when Miss Lee appears on screen, but doesn't look anything special. Smile Again... I'd rather cry, based on the first Episode (Kim Hee-Sun... jeezus. I remember she seemed like someone living on this planet back when she acted in 와니와 준하). Kind of interested in the new Friday Drama as it doesn't seem to be about adultery (or maybe not?)... but that's about it.

Sorry, not much. Reviewing Goodbye Solo next week, to compensate a little.

» Posted by x at May 23, 2006 05:34 PM

Goodbye Solo review next week? That's BIG compensation. YAY!

Thanks for all your updates, x. Take care.

Thank you so much for all the info on K dramas!
It would be great if you can include the original music videos of these dramas in the future because it's quite hard for non-Korean-die-hard fans to find the music videos from Korean websites.

» Posted by yeahbaby at May 23, 2006 09:53 PM

Ok, here is my input for the current crop of dramas.

1) Fireworks: totally wretched. I don't think Ms. Han could have picked a worse project. Writing is totally pathetic and ridiculous. The cast is not worth noting for sure. How bad is it??? It actually made the next entry somewhat enjoyable in comparison. And yes, there are some stupidly gratuituous shots of her two main assets. She needs to get another manager (and acting lessons.)

2) Smile Again: Perhaps it is in comparison to Fireworks, but this show is not as wretched as I thought it was going to be. Sure Kim Hee Sun is uber-untalented but I rather be watching her in this show than Ms. Han in Fireworks, which granted is not saying much. The male leads are actually decent and the second female lead (Yoon Se Ah?) is actually doing a terrific job. Story is so-so but not as awful as I had been fearing.

3) Jumong: as I said before very very good. However, I do have to say that the 2nd and 3rd episode were not quite as impressive as the first but this is just the begining so we shall see. I have to agree with X, though, that even though this is/will be very good, it will not be able to touch Shin Don. That one is ruthlessly good!

4) Great Inheritance: I've completely given up on this one; Han Ji Min was (much) better in her previous works (even Wolf) and of course the Kim Jae Won is Kim Myung Min. If you want to watch a funny gangster type of show, Bad Family is a much much better way to go.

Haven't seen Pure 19 and probably won't. That's my take, anyway.

Good Lord!..*shakes head*..what happened to Spring Waltz!? Probably the worst 2006 Kdrama considering, it is one of the most anticipated and probably the MOST anticipated...aish!I have watched previous seasons drama I thought this last installment would give me a smash but oh boy! wassup with the rating!
I will skip watching it unless somebody can gimme one good reason why I should watch..

MR X..How about giving us a REVIEW!!! PLZZZ!

PS: Good Bless Kat for American Idol!

» Posted by amy at May 24, 2006 12:00 AM

To answer a few questions:

1) Music Videos: I'll try. Not exactly easy to go through hundreds of pages at DC Inside, Soompi and the like.

2) Spring Waltz: It will get its own spot in a future Roundup (first should be up in a couple of weeks with My Girl, Princess Hours, The Special of My Life and Young-Jae's Golden Days, plus maybe a Dramacity if they stop sucking).

3) Jumong. Only watched 1 and 2, but I knew they'd slow down a little later (especially considering the initial 양아치 mode of Jumong himself). I mean, the first episode was F I R E. But yes, Shin Don is hard to touch. It's like taking the bad guy from Emperor of the Sea and making him lead, laughing in the face of all the 'heroes' coming before. Jung Ha-Yeon... I'm not worthy! BTW, is it me or Gyeon Mi-Ri is hotter now than when she was in her twenties? Maybe there's something in the water.

4) Yoon Se-Ah. Yeah, lovely. Gave up after Ep. 1 though. Does it really pick up or is it just a case of 'Oh! Well, guess I could do worse, like having to wash dishes or something'.

Hi X! First time writing here, but I'm Jennifer and I've been following your reviews for awhile now.

Thanks for always keeping us updated with news, ratings, reviews, etc.! I'm truly grateful.

Sorry for being repetitive, but Great Inheritance is pretty bad. It makes me uncomfortable to see Han Ji Min trying so hard to be cute and funny. But, I do love Kim Ji Hoon though he's a bit stoic.

» Posted by jennifer at May 24, 2006 03:37 AM

Dear Mr x
So sorry to hear that you are not in a great mood. It must be stressful having to update this databank (daily?) It may not be necessary to do so; we would be quite happy with weekly updates.
Take that World cup break and forget about drama reviews for the time being. Your tribe don't want their beloved x to suffer from burn-out !

» Posted by Fiona at May 25, 2006 06:35 AM

nahh.. writing actually helps a lot, and it doesn't take much to update this, and it's kind of fun. It's just that my 성질 got a lot quicker, so... 봐주세요. 요즘 기분이 좀 그렇다... X같아요. :-P

Reviews frequency went down because of the break, but they should resume pretty frequently after the World Cup. The only difference is I won't give long reviews to stuff that doesn't deserve it (there'll be a Roundup for that, as I said), and they'll most focus on non-Trendy Drama stuff like Alone in Love, Bad Family, Jumong, Ballad of Seo Dong, etc. etc. etc.

Drama Previews should resume in here whenever... uhh, sometime soon.

Gotta review Shin Don sometimes before the end of the year too. It'll look a bit strange if something I haven't reviewed ends up in the Top 3 at the end of the year (Hell, I'd be VERY surprised if this thing doesn't end up first. I need to rewatch seriously from the beginning, but we're around 9-9.5~, so Rebirth level).

» Posted by X at May 25, 2006 06:59 AM

Aw, does this mean that you don't think My Girl deserves a long review? I was looking forward to your long review of the drama, but I understand. I'll still look forward to reading your thoughts on the drama, and on all the other dramas out so far.

Welcome back Mr. X, and thanks for all the news updates.

p.s. Is the news of Eric and Lee Da Hae being in a new drama together really confirmed? This is the first I'm hearing of it. Doesn't Eric have other dramas he'll be working on that should keep him very busy, Wolf and the drama with Lee Joon Gi? Am very excited to see Lee Da Hae onscreen again though, but hopefully not in a predictable plot of a drama.

» Posted by yeonji at May 25, 2006 05:06 PM

Yeah, My Girl goes in the Roundup. Great start, but it ends up just like every other SBS Trendy Drama (although it's still much better than their average garbage).

They haven't signed the contract yet, but when they announce via the press, we're pretty much there.

» Posted by X at May 25, 2006 06:11 PM

i like Lee Dong Gun
i have seen "smile again "
i think he is very good
the musicof film anh the content vety attracting
i think the rating of "Smile again" will be hight

» Posted by small swallow at May 26, 2006 06:34 AM

thank you mr x, you're just too nice to us..
have fun watching the world cup...

i was wondering, is i really really like you worth watching? the ratings aren't that bad... but it could be from the eugene star appeal...

» Posted by v1rgi3 at May 26, 2006 08:10 PM

Thank you Mr. X for your update!
Is Dear Heaven a good series? It's been gaining a high rating but it doesn't seem to me that many people are talking about it.

» Posted by yeahbaby at May 29, 2006 11:57 AM

Well, haven't seen enough in the last two months to write even a Roundup entry, but it's like every other Im Sung-Han shows. Starts nice, then the ratings get up, the writer runs out of ideas, and here's guerrilla tactics. If you can't write compelling characters, throw controversial time bombs in the middle so that'll keep the ajumma wanting for more.

Yoon Jung-Hee is lovely, but seriously... I can't wait for its end. Yeongae Somun might end up stinking, but it's still better than manipulative histrionics.

» Posted by X at May 29, 2006 03:31 PM

X, thanks for your input and cyberman as well.
I can only imagine what World Cup Fever is like over there.. how I wish I could be there where I won't have to watch the games live at an ungodly hour.

I caught up watching the beginning episodes of the recent dramas.

Great Inheritance, Fireworks, Smile Again: And only one of these can win Worst Drama of the Year. (I would also add Which Star Are You From to this list)

Mr. Goodbye: Not as bad as the ones mentioned before, but not decent enough for me to keep watching.

Pure 19: I'm not a fan of daily dramas at all, but I took a look at this one. Average, but not garbage. It's actually quite decent.

Jumong: I saved this one so I could watch 4 episodes straight through. It was EXCELLENT and I didn't feel it was overhyped at all by everyone that watched it already.

X, I think I read somewhere here that Hur Joon Ho signed on for more episodes.. is that true?? If Jumong could get any better than it is now, having Hur Joon Ho for more eps would be the only way.
(got to add, Oh Yeon Soo's husband is a very, very lucky man.^^)

v1rgi3, to answer your question, NO.
Unless you enjoy watching predictable storylines and OVERacting, I would advise you don't waste your time on I Really, Really Like You.

» Posted by jahye at May 29, 2006 04:41 PM

World Cup Craze is so crazy that Fireworks will broadcast two episodes on 6/3, to avoid the Korea-Ghana game.

Hur Joon-Ho signed on till Ep. 11, after that he can't appear anymore because then you'd seriously mess with history.

And yes, Son Ji-Chang is very lucky. Oh Yeon-Soo gets prettier and prettier over the years... it's scary.

» Posted by X at May 30, 2006 06:27 AM

Just finished watching 위대한 유산 Ep. 1 on KBS World [they're calling it 'Kindergarten Love'... 유치원 사랑? 그래, 아주 유치하다] and... man, did they write this with their feet?

Jung Tae-Woo... every time he started talking I wanted to throw something at the screen. Even I can do a better Busan saturi than that.

Don't think even the great veterans can save this. 아이그... 지민양, 불쌍하다 증말.

» Posted by X at June 1, 2006 10:05 AM

Yes, I also feel pity for Han Ji Min ... but she still is not too well suited for comedy. If it is any consolation, the script for Great Inheritance is microscopically better than Fireworks, which is really really not saying very much. Fireworks is definitely in the running for the worst show of the year so far. Ahh and yes Jumong continues to impress with great writing, direction and acting. Song Il Guk is showing his range and Kim Seung Soo is not too shabby either. Of course the veterans are great so they hardly need to be mentioned. Smile Again was slightly interesting up to episode 4 but is now definitely showing the limitations of the main stars of the show (i.e. Lee Dong Gun and Kim Hee Sun) but I actually like Lee Jin Wook's performance in this show and Yoon Se Ah is playing up the spiteful vamp part if a little stereo typically. Seoul 1945 killed off my favorite character, Yeoh Woon Hyoung ... too bad but that's what happened in history.

» Posted by cyberman at June 1, 2006 10:00 PM

Lee Dong-Geon is fine in 'rich boy trying to act like the next-door-guy' mode, as in 파리의 연인 or 네멋. But when he goes all dramatic, he's pretty bad.

I'll check it for Miss Yoon and Lee Jin-Wook anyway, though. Still very rough on the edges, but Yoon doesn't look like just a pretty face.

Jumong... haha. It's a monster. Should hit the 30s next week. I'm actually considering writing reviews every 8-10 Episodes, but we'll see. Have you seen all the parodies at the DC Inside Boards? They're going crazy with the three 'traffic lights' youngsters (Jumong, Kim Seung-Soo and the other guy). And all that 반지의 주몽 stuff...

» Posted by X at June 2, 2006 06:17 AM

I agree with you X...it's so funny everytime that the 3 brothers appear in Joo Mong because of their costumes...they really look like a traffic light when they're together...I was thinking if their costumes' colors were intentionally made like that...and I feel like Joo Mong might even reach 50% (keeping my fingers crossed for that)

» Posted by koalabear at June 2, 2006 09:22 PM

I don't think it's unintentional. And I might speculate that it's Jung Hyung-Soo's hand here. Choi Wan-Gyu has never been THAT great dealing with bits of comedy inside his Sageuk (just like Lee Byung-Hoon is not good at battle scenes). Their talents lie elsewhere.

And here's more about the 신호등 삼형제 from the DC Inside Boards:

It was 5th in the Naver rankings for a while! (http://kr.img.dc.yahoo.com/b8/data/jumong/ScreenHunter_003.jpg)

» Posted by X at June 3, 2006 06:45 AM

I didn't notice the "traffic light" effect until X mentioned it and I saw a couple of pictures of the three together. It is funny! X is also right about Lee Byung Hoon not being good at battle scenes ... those scenes in Seodongyo were pretty tame. Ahh, yes, Jumong of the Rings ... that thought came to my mind right away. Iron troops reminded me immediately of the Ring Wraith and the "quest" through the caves, very much like a D&D adventure and Lord of the Rings. Actually, the story so far reminds of some old European Fairy Tales ... you know the ones about two bad princes who exile the good prince and how the good prince returns in triumph with his princess, etc.

I've watched a couple episodes of Mr. Goodbye and I think it's pretty average, not terrible, not great. Lee Bo Young is quite charming in it and other cast members are okay. The story is a bit predictable but it much better executed then Fireworks or Great Inheritance (Kindergarten Love?) It will of course get buried in the ratings war because of Jumong but it is honestly not too bad.

» Posted by cyberman at June 3, 2006 10:16 AM

보영아... 아이구~

Like Oh Yoon-Ah a lot too, and if they keep the melo shenanigans in check, I guess the cast is good enough. Starts Tuesday on KBS World, so we'll see what turns out.

I just read Hae Mosu could have gone to Cha In-Pyo and even Kim Seok-Hoon. Now, I can deal with Oh Yeon-Soo being Song Il-Guk's mother when they're both 35 (women were giving birth in their early teens sometimes back then, and Song has a pretty 'young' face, or at least looks believable in younger roles. Kim Seung-Soo is the same), but Kim Seok-Hoon.... eh.

Looks like Choi is doing the structure and outline, and Jung will work on the interaction and dialogue a lot more.

Have you seen the Yeongae Somun sets? Now I don't want to compare SBS' Art Direction team with MBC's (how could I, they're unbeatable), but they look like crap. And it seems Lee Hwan-Kyung will push politics and machismo more than Drama, so I guess it's 야인시대 in Goguryeo. Eh.

On the other hand 대조영 looks great.

BTW, hearing good things about the new Friday Drama with Kim Mi-Sook. Will probably have to check it out.

» Posted by X at June 3, 2006 10:38 AM

Just saw the first episode of Great Inheritance. Hell yeah, it IS crappy. Kim JaeWon's crying his eyes out and I'm rolling mine. Agree with cyberman--Han JiMin tries too hard to be the perky romcom heroine.

But why would Lee MiSook, Jang HyunSung and Byun HeeBong want to be in this drama then? Maybe it gets... better? (though I'm not keeping my hopes up)

» Posted by melusine at June 3, 2006 05:18 PM

Eh... there's bills to pay. More disappointed that they have actors like those and don't use them. I mean, one second of Son Byung-Ho did more than 50 Minutes of Kim Jae-Won on Episode 1, honestly.

» Posted by X at June 3, 2006 06:50 PM

have seen few glimpses of Great Inheritance (Kindergarten Love) in KBS World last week...I was hoping that it was good but it didn't hold my attention that much...I'm not even sure if I'll watch it or not but I'm keeping my hopes up for Mr. Goodbye because of Ahn Jae-wook

» Posted by koalabear at June 4, 2006 03:14 PM

Watched the first four eisodes of Mr. Goodbye. I honestly think it's not too bad. I kind of like it. Don't know why. Maybe because it didn't make me want to throw up like Fireworks or nauseous like Great Inheritance/Kindergarten Love. Maybe those two show got better in later episodes but I'm don't plan to find out!

» Posted by cyberman at June 4, 2006 03:59 PM

Took a look at Ep. 1 of 101st Proposal yesterday, and it looks great. Doesn't have a chance in hell with the ratings Jumong is getting, and it's quite a shame. Maybe using the Wed/Thu spot was better.

Now that I think about it, SBS is not having that bad of a year, all considered. Alone in Love, Bad Family, Seo Dong, Friday Dramas are quite watchable despite the deja vu feeling, and now this one.

» Posted by X at June 4, 2006 06:28 PM

돌아온 순애 sounds fantastic! 박진희 AND 심혜진?! in a sort of adult version of Freaky Friday?? ^^
I haven't followed any of her movies, but I've loved 박진희 since 비단향꽃무 (still one of my personal favorite dramas of all time).
And 심혜진.. who doesn't like her? The first season of 안녕 프란체스카 was a hoot and she's also one of the actors that made watching Goong bearable.

I've said before Mr. Goodbye isn't garbage, but it isn't anything special. Not really worth my time when I'm already busy watching Jumong and 101st Proposal.
Speaking of.. glad to know you're enjoying that show X.
It's a real shame it isn't getting any viewers though, going up against Jumong. Been trying to get the word out on Soompi (in a friendly way) that people should stop wasting their time watching garbage like 스마일 어게인, 불꽃놀이, 위대한 유산, 어느 멋진 날 (and you KNOW they're only watching it for the pretty faces) when they could be watching REAL acting in an entertaining story with 101st Proposal.

» Posted by jahye at June 4, 2006 11:39 PM

소중하고 짜증난 사춘기... 에이그... 시간 낭빕니다.

I mean, 2000 pages for 궁, 20 for Goodbye Solo. That 100:1 ratio tells you all. Not that 100s of posts about 변태오빠 and 발연희 (!) on the DC Inside Boards are any different, but I stopped worrying about those forums in a long time. Now if they organized posts a little, I wouldn't need to sort through pages and pages of 'oh my! He'z so HoTtErZ!"

Like, finding posters for the non MBC stuff is a total pain.

Glad SBS is waking up a little. I'm looking forward to at least 3-4 of their upcoming Dramas, although MBC still has the ball for most of the year.

Maybe I should review 프란체 one of these days. If this was released with subs it would have become a sort of cult hit overseas too. Needs more exposure. Noh Do-Cheol's new 'Dramacom' Soulmate is good too.

» Posted by X at June 5, 2006 04:06 AM

One fine day is the only drama that I'm watching now. People has been commenting that this is the best of the three wed/thurs drama.
You can see an improvement in Sung Yuri's acting. But you still can't classify her improvements as really great as she tends to be overshadowed by her co-stars.Yoon Ha Joon, the new guy that's playing her psychotic brother in the drama is actually the star that's pulling in the crowds as mentioned in the Korean news lately.

» Posted by yeohweping at June 7, 2006 12:05 AM

mr. x, will you be writing a review for jumong? or comment more on it?

» Posted by babyfarm at June 7, 2006 04:09 PM

Yeah. I'm thinking of doing small reviews every 8/10 Episodes, but right now I'm busy as hell, so we'll see after the World Cup.

Of course I'll do a long review, but that's like 8 months away.

"소중하고 짜증난 사춘기... 에이그... 시간 낭빕니다."

A review of 프란체 would be great! Although, I only watched the first season. ㅠㅠ

There really isn't anything worth watching on Wed/Thurs. 어느 멋진 날 may be the "best" of three dramas, but that's like choosing the least of 3 evils.
I'm just counting down until 돌아온 순애 starts. It looks the most appealing of the 3 that will replace the current W/T dramas.

I hate the idea of crappy dramas staring crappy actors with pretty faces, but 어느 멋진 날 doesn't seem to bother me as much because Gong Yoo and Sung Yuri deserve to star in a crappy drama together because they're both disgustingly bad at acting, unlike the case of Dennis Oh and Nam Sang Mi.. now THAT makes me angry.

Those pics are hilarious X! May it help with the 주몽 withdrawl next week. KOR VS TOGO better be worth it!
And I'm praying.. 해모수 and 유화.. there MUST be a reunion!!

OK, I'm going to leave with a confession: 열아홉 순정 is my guilty pleasure of the year! ^^ (I catch up on all the episodes on Thursday since there's nothing else to watch)

» Posted by jahye at June 8, 2006 04:02 AM

thank you. will you summarize the episodes too? it's hard to understand what is going on. looking forward to your review.

» Posted by babyfarm at June 8, 2006 01:16 PM

"A review of 프란체 would be great! Although, I only watched the first season. ㅠㅠ"

You're not losing much with the rest. Season 3 picks up a little with Kim Soo-Mi, but it's pretty much a low-rent rehash of what worked on Season 1 with less comedy. I mean... the John Woo brothers... I never laughed so much for a sitcom EVER.

"There really isn't anything worth watching on Wed/Thurs. 어느 멋진 날 may be the "best" of three dramas, but that's like choosing the least of 3 evils."

I'm wondering. Is 변태오빠 Yoo Ha-Joon so praised because the rest of the cast is total 발연기, or is he really doing well? I'm not touching this even with a ten foot pole until it's over.

"Those pics are hilarious X! May it help with the 주몽 withdrawl next week. KOR VS TOGO better be worth it!
And I'm praying.. 해모수 and 유화.. there MUST be a reunion!!"

Actually 주몽 Mania are bitching that they want two episodes back to back on the non-game day. Could actually happen, and it'd make sense.

"OK, I'm going to leave with a confession: 열아홉 순정 is my guilty pleasure of the year! ^^ (I catch up on all the episodes on Thursday since there's nothing else to watch)"

Another confession: Goo Hye-Seon is hella cute. But I don't have time to watch this. -_-

» Posted by X at June 8, 2006 02:58 PM

Mmmmh... so we don't get Jumong on the 12, 13 AND 19th. The Episode on the 20th will start a little earlier.

Seems like they're trying to buy time, since there's the World Cup excuse. All the better, more time to catch up.

» Posted by X at June 8, 2006 08:02 PM

X, any idea who is starring in KBS upcoming morning drama 웃는 얼굴로 돌아보라?

» Posted by creidesca at June 13, 2006 03:10 PM

Lee Deok-Hwa, Lee Hye-Young, Park Sang-Myun and Jo Mi-Ryung. But it's a sitcom.

thanks X for the news.. weeeee i'm looking forward to park jin hee's return.. i liked her alot back then.. she was so cute in "byul" :)

» Posted by armanigurl at June 13, 2006 09:54 PM

Yeah... Korea must be the only country where three stations show the same game at the SAME TIME. They took 60% of the audience for the Korea-Togo Game last night.

But besides that... WOW... couldn't possibly have been a better start. 태극전사 win and France/Switzerland draw.

Oh, tell your secret task force that 'thing' might take until the end of the Month, so if they want to change their lists it's fine. Work is killing me!

대~~~한민국! ㅋㅋ

Thanx Mr. X!

News has it that Yoon Eun Hye has taken new leading role in the KBS Drama, The Vineyard Man.Although I'm happy to see her in another drama, but personally I'm worried for her as well that her new drama will be like an egg throwing against wall. Ratings for it wouldn't be really good as it will be going against the great "Jumong" and SBS " More stranger than Heavens". To make things worse, her rumoured co-star happens to be Kim Nam Jin whose performances are rather stiff.

» Posted by yeohweping at June 14, 2006 12:08 AM

Song Yoon-Ah and Kim Tae-Hee's thing is just a rumour. Nothing confirmed.

» Posted by X at June 14, 2006 12:13 AM

AG, thanks for your support! They won even with less than inspiring performance. I know ... not much drama to watch this week. I don't know about Ha Ji Won as Hwang Jin Yi ... we shall see.

» Posted by cyberman at June 14, 2006 03:50 AM

i dunno about you all, but i think i've lost dramas to watch... :/ i know i'm in trouble when the only drama i'm watching right now is .. 불꽃놀이 :/

i dunno why, the dramas the past few months are all so badly casted, except for Jumong of course.. i'm waiting for the full set before continuing..

even my kdrama mates are telling me that they're waiting for september to come.. thats where all the good things come ... joo jin mo ah~~~~~~~ eric ssi yahhh~~~~~~~

who's waiting for kim hee sun and park ji yoon's 해어화 ??? put two dead fishes together in acting.. brilliant!!!

» Posted by armanigurl at June 14, 2006 10:03 AM

armanigurl, 불꽃놀이? -_- Well, whatever floats your boat. ^^

The beginning of the week starts off great with 주몽 and 101번째 프로포즈, but after Tuesday.. -_- Which is why I've even come down to watching 열아홉 순정. (starring 구혜선, who X has admitted is "hella cute" ㅋㅋㅋ)

X, what is MBC going to be showing on the 19th in place of 주몽?
I can understand why it was preempted this week, (오~ 필승 코리아!) but there's no game on the 19th or 20th.

» Posted by jahye at June 14, 2006 10:38 AM

Oh, there is a game... Togo vs Switzerland. Seeing how things are now, it's quite important. If they draw and Korea at least draws with France, they're 16강 for sure.

I bet MBC gurus were secretly hoping Korea would lose, then they'd be able to show Jumong. But really, they're taking this too far. Let's say there's 36% watching the game until 11 pm. What do you do... well, show the Drama after that? I know changing schedule often only ruins your chances, but this is ridiculous.

And yes, 구혜선 is pretty. Not 이보영 pretty, but enough to make me go: 뮈... 예쁘니가 봐줄게? 사투리는 개판이지만.

» Posted by X at June 14, 2006 12:13 PM

열아홉 순정?? I'll give it a lookie today..
i've always thought 구혜선 was cute, but not sure if she can act good. need to check her out :)

I don't understand why i'm enjoying 불꽃놀이 either. I hate han che young's acting like i go yuck yuck yuck at alot of her scenes.. and the script is a joke.. but i guess i'm addicted to kang ji hwan.. in between episodes.. i go back to watch geum soon, just so i can watch ji hwan some more :P

i think the few dramas of late lack good looking men which i'm deprived of. *ARGHHHH pULLS HAIR* where have all the good looking men gone???

» Posted by armanigurl at June 14, 2006 08:38 PM

they're watching 축구 on TV...

» Posted by X at June 14, 2006 08:49 PM

» Posted by armanigurl at June 14, 2006 10:33 PM

Ahn Jung Hwan, eh ... what about Lee Young Pyo? Yeah, 구혜선's saturi is pretty unconvicing but it's a cute little story. I think you must be very very desperate to watch Fireworks ... even Mister Goodbye is better than that!! Even Smile Again is better! Not much but slightly. Back to World Cup.

» Posted by cyberman at June 14, 2006 10:44 PM

MR Goodbye? recommending me ageing men after my complain?? perhaps Smile again has the best looking men but even if you put a gun to my head i'd rather die than watch kim hee sun act again. i know han che young is equally as painful, but i've been psyching myself.. telling myself that I completed "chun hyang" i can do this i can do this.. n i guess the psyching up has been working.. meanwhile, i've never been able to finish anything by mis kim. :/

hi! i agree with your reviews most of the time i.e. 'goodbye solo'. thank god for your reviews as i use them a lot when buying dvds and vcds here in the philippines. btw, have you reviewed this old mbc tv drama 'passion' shown april-october 2004? i'd like to read your review on this one and see if i agree with yours.

» Posted by ellenb at June 17, 2006 08:02 PM

Passion as in 열정? Daily Drama with Son Hyun-Joo, Jin Hee-Kyung, Jo Mi-Ryung and the like?

Starts out really nice, turns totally wretched around the middle point. Just as bad as Im Sung-Han's works.

» Posted by X at June 17, 2006 10:54 PM

have seen Mr. Goodbye and Pure 19 sice they just started airing in KBS World this week...I liked Mr. Goodbye, it's not that bad and not really that good either...I hope I could continue watching it since I am giving up on Great Inheritance...Pure 19 is a good drama...I felt pity for Goo Hye-sun's role and I agree with X that she's cute in her own way...just a question...Joo Mong's ratings got a little low than their last episode but still they are still number 1...what happened?

» Posted by koalabear at June 21, 2006 10:01 AM

Watched Mr. Good-Bye's first ep. too.

What to say... It's eh... OK. English stuff was painful (that secretary! Oh mama. Just get the hell off my screen), the gay angle started a little on the homophobic side but overall they're handling it OK. But I can't stand Ahn Jae-Wook in 귀공자 mode, and Jo Dong-Hyuk is his usual annoying self. Production looks actually pretty good, but we'll see once it leaves Les Vegas. Script already looks rather wretched though.

Jumong is first because it's bad ass, and people waited two weeks for it. I'll probably write the first review after Ep. 10 in a couple of weeks.

» Posted by X at June 21, 2006 10:25 AM

oh, don't give up on Mr. Goodbye. well, i was thinking like X (regarding anjaewook) when i watched first 2 eps. almost gave up on it too. Then i picked up ep. 10. and it was really good so i downloaded all the rest and caught up to recent ep. I have to say it's very well made, skillfully directed and shot. good acting too. highly recommended.

» Posted by kona at July 5, 2006 09:27 PM

I've decided to continue watching Mr. Goodbye...I'm slowly getting addicted to its story but the ending is still in question if Ahn Jae-wook will die or not...I enjoy watching 101st Proposal too but their ratings are raked by Joo Mong and Mr. Goodbye... as for Joo Mong...no question about it everyone is getting crazy over this drama but after Haemosu dies or should I say after Hur Joon-ho left the show...will the next episodes be as intense as the earlier ones? This is such a good drama and I enjoyed reading Sageuk World

» Posted by koalabear at July 6, 2006 05:39 AM

Yeah, I'm watching. I suppose compared to the other non-Sageuk weekly Dramas, it's much more watchable -- I could only resist for a whopping 35 Minutes of episode 1 for One Fine Day, and Smile Again I pretty much gave up after Episode 3. Don't even know if I'll drop them in the Roundup (that'd mean having to watch them completely. Eh).

But it could be better. Oh Yoon-Ah's the best thing in the show so far (up to Episode... uh, I forgot. 6 maybe? Don't remember where KBS World is right now), and now that Ahn Jae-Wook is escaping 귀공자 mode to return to his charming self, things are OK. But it has embarrassing moments, especially dealing with Lee Hye-Sook (such a great actress, why waste her with roles like these?). Doesn't look like it'll go to Andromeda, but it's not too good either. Jo Dong-Hyuk's character is completely retarded, and the subplot involving the hotel business so far is handled with little care (do they EVER WORK THERE?). Still, I'll be loyal to Lee Bo-Young and keep watching.

I'm saving 101st to watch it all in one when it's over. The list of Dramas to finish and reviews to write is just way too long. What I've seen looked very good, though.

Sounds like Ha Ji-Won might be doing the new Kim Do-Woo Drama in September. Didn't write anything 'cause it's only a rumour by now, but just so you know...

Oh... Alone in Love will go the Rebirth DC way. I'm reviewing the DVD.

» Posted by X at July 6, 2006 06:42 AM

so...did anyone give Invisible Man Choi Jang Soo a try yet? After reading X's preview, I completely had no expectation or knew what I would be getting into, but I found myself enjoying the first 2 episodes already. Now why is it called "Invisible Man"?

» Posted by creidesca at July 6, 2006 10:44 AM

Mister Goodbye actually gets quite a bit better in the EP 10-12 range ... it becomes extremely sad but hopeful. It really is pretty decent. Jumong is of course very good but I still don't think it's better than Shin Don, yet. I could only watch Smile Again with a lot of fast forwarding ... even then it's hard to watch Kim Hee Sun acting (if you can call talking while nodding your head back and forth acting.) Believe it or not I find myself more interested in how Lee Dong Guk becomes a perfume maker than the rest of the story (perhaps that should tell you something!!) Still watching Seoul 1945 ... needing to fast forward some parts of that too but has some good parts. Watched your link for Eyes of Dawn and I think I can understand why some people may have compared Seoul 1945 to it but I think the resemblence (especially in the plot) is merely superficial. Eyes of Dawn is much harder hitting, much more gritty, passionate, riskier and rewarding then Seoul 1945 will ever dream of being or becoming. Lastly, I don't know why Fireworks gets even the rating it gets ... so awful. AG ... I know you're watching it but COME ON!! I guess if can enjoy it, then you should enjoy it.

» Posted by cyberman at July 6, 2006 11:52 PM

Eyes of Dawn is untouchable. Nothing comes even close. I know I gave 10 to Sandglass, but then Eyes of Dawn is 15. ^_^

I'm still watching Seoul 1945... it's... depressing in a way. This thing has so much potential, but they waste it on silly melodramatics, when the political/historical core is already so strong (loved when the ultra-right wingers started complaining about 'commies with an heart' in the show. Uh folks, Park Jung-Hee's dead. Get it over with). Actually Lee Seung-Man's adoptive sons are suing them. How pathetic.

But I must say, that 6/25 recreation was mighty impressive, in some ways even better than Taegukgi. Still better than watching anything showing on Weekends, but I'm still quite disappointed.

Choi Jang-Soo had a big jump in ratings yesterday (eh... gotta work on the update. Damn sleep), looks like it'll do pretty well. Will wait for KBS World. Kindergarten Love is just... ahh, I don't know why they even bother.

» Posted by X at July 7, 2006 08:42 AM

Hello X, do you have any ideas on how good the subtitles are for the Alone in Love boxset? I don't want to be disappointed like I was with the Fashion 70s boxset. and thanks for all the reviews and articles that you've written. i enjoyed it.
one more random question: do you think Star in my Heart is worth watching and what rating would you give it out of a 10?

» Posted by Bshater at July 8, 2006 04:44 PM

1) I should be getting the boxset in about two weeks (unless it's delayed again). I'm reviewing the DVD, so a little patience and you'll know. Generally, English Subs on SBS DVDs tend be a little worse than KBS efforts, but authoring and production companies have changed since the Fashion 70s DVD was released, so that could change -- plus this is a particular case, as the Drama is much more film-like than most competitors out there.

2) Wrote a review last year. You can read it here.

» Posted by X at July 8, 2006 05:55 PM

seems like I want to watch The Invisible Man too...KBS dramas have seen drought this year (except for Seven Princesses and Pure 19)same here I wanted Great Inheritance/Kindergarten Love to air it's last episode on KBS World...

and I'm happy that Jumong is following the footsteps of Dae Jang-geum...the Jumong fever is expanding as early as now...whoa I can't wait until it airs in my country as well since they bought it already : )

» Posted by koalabear at July 8, 2006 11:47 PM

Thanks for the reply X. I just went to the Yesasia's coming soon section and saw that Yesasia will be releasing Dr. Gang on DVD on the 30th of July. So i was wondering if you have any thoughts on this drama. i just hope its as good as Ruler of your own World.

» Posted by Bshater at July 9, 2006 11:35 AM

Dr. Gang DVD is without Subs, BTW. What do I think about it... hmmm, I'm not sure, really. Definitely a Park Sung-Soo Drama, but then again I expected something different. I need to rewatch anyway as I couldn't watch it for almost a month and when I got back I was a little confused, but I'm reviewing it for one of the next Roundups.

» Posted by X at July 9, 2006 12:25 PM

Well, Smile Again has ended in a puff of smoke. It made you go, huh? Okay, that's the end? A pitiful finish to a luke warm dish of dishwater. X, you don't need to finish it to added to the round-up ... I can contribute that part if you want! Watched first two episodes of Yeongae Somun ... hmmm. The sets and the battle staging were impressive at times but I am very much underwhelmed. The script is pretty hackneyed and made for a simpleton. The characters have as much depth as Heman and Skeletor. I don't think I can watch 100 episodes of this. The first two episodes actually had too much action... wished there were some intelligent dialogue. Speaking of dialogues, Jumong continues to impress with excellent writing and acting. It is much more focused on the story than Yeon gae Somun seems to be. Song Il Guk is doing a really excellent job. I'll try to fill my response to your survey, X, but for now here is my contribution!

» Posted by cyberman at July 11, 2006 12:28 AM

You know what, if you want to deal with that stuff as a guest reviewer, you've got a spot in one of the next Roundups. I tried to go back to it last week, but frankly... uh... no thanks. Same goes for One Fine Day. 너무 발연기라서 보기 싫어요~

I suspected 개소문 (최고의 전투씬? 무순 개뿔이 개소문...) would turn out this way, but (some of) the actors are good enough that when things settle down it should be OK. But I loved when one of the DC Inside guys called this a Macaroni Sageuk. Totally right. I took a peak at the first 2 Episodes, and Hwang In-Young going all baritone to look scary was hilarious. Lee Hwan-Kyung still doesn't realize 전통 Sageuk doesn't need to be a 전형 Sageuk. %_%

Battles didn't look too bad, but it smells CG worse than Hollywood. I prefer 100 extras going at it with close-up camerawork like in Jumong than 5,000 ghost fighters made with StudioMax throwing textured rocks while real actors prance around a blue screen.

More than anything... Yang Man-Choon as a sidekick in the Anshi Castle Battle? I mean, I'm OK with historical distortion... but what the hell is that.

And Jumong Episode 12... FIRE. FIRE. Haemosu Mifune stars in Throne of Blood. And Jeon Gwang-Ryeol is simply a beast in this. Looks like ratings will take a while to start growing now that we're done with Hussel Crowe, but it's getting better and better.

» Posted by X at July 11, 2006 01:02 AM

can somebody tell me what drama to watch??? I tried Mr. Goodbye.. I tried 101st proposal.. *sadly, not into it* I freakingly need something to watch!! foot ball is over... help~~~~~~~ my life is suddenly goal less with no kdramas to watch... i'm rewatching all the old stuffs i watched before, its pathetic.. its like i'm chewing grass...

» Posted by ag at July 11, 2006 06:44 AM

oh ya.. please don't say Jumong..

» Posted by armanigurl at July 11, 2006 06:46 AM

AG, I know there's likely no real goodlooking men in Invisible Man Choi Jang Soo, but definitely give this one a try, especially since there's only 2 epis out so far...and have you watched the 2004 KBS drama You'll Find Out (where Kang Ji Hwan had been 1 of the leads)?

» Posted by creidesca at July 11, 2006 07:07 AM

AG, you really didn't like 101st Proposal??
But it's so good. ㅜㅜ

Basically you just want anything starring hot, hot men? ^^
And you'll sacrifice storyline and acting for it.

I was going to suggest you check out 돌아와요 순애씨 (Please Come Back, Soon-Ae) when it debuts this Wed/Thurs, but knowing Yoon Da Hoon and Lee Jae Hwang are the leading men.. plus it's more of a comedy and I figure you prefer drama-filled dramas.

Can't really thing of anything out right now or coming soon that you would like. >_

Is anyone else kind of offended or bothered by the ridiculous amount of money Eric is getting for his new drama? It might be just me, but isn't he not worth that kind of money?? Is it evil of me to hope the drama bombs big time?

» Posted by jahye at July 11, 2006 08:54 AM

But... he's a Sweet Guy!

Drama cachets are getting ridiculous, frankly. Jumong costs 600 Million Won per Episode, and Eric gets a sixth of that to act in a Trendy Drama? Meh

» Posted by X at July 11, 2006 12:08 PM

thanks everyone from hearing my plea, though i was just ranting ^_^.. creidesca, somehow hearing you say that there's no good looking man in Invisible Man Choi Jang Soo makes me want to cry for some reasons. But since you say it is good, it must be worth something. :)

jahye.. i think 101st proposal is good but wasn't drawn to it somehow. no doubt lee moon shik looked so incredibly cute, and park sun young is one of my favorite actresses, but maybe its the fairytale theme of beauty and the beast that put me off a little bit.

I used to watch kdramas for the script and acting.. hehe. but lately.. seems like a shortage of goodlooking young men in kdramas sort of alerted me. With the shortage, i guess the price of good looking actors have gone up. I think paying eric mun alot of money is sort of worth it for me.. hahaha.

X.. i just saw your top 10 dramas review.. awesome, dude! :)

» Posted by ag at July 11, 2006 10:26 PM

I'm now waiting for Over the Rainbow to start as it's a first of it's kind youth drama with a strong casting of older actors. Kim Ok Bin has convinced me that she can dance either classical ballet or the modern day Hip-Hop through the first drama preview. And if your sister happened to be much younger and looks like you, she might happen to play your childhood days in the drama just like Ok Bin.

Hello X, i have a question for ya. do you know where to purchase the Alone in Love premium boxset besides DVDfromkorea? that site charges me $20 for regular shipping to the U.S! i tried the US Yesasia, but they don't have it. only the global one has the DVD set, but they won't ship it to the US. plus, its out of print already! crazy, huh?

» Posted by Bshater at July 15, 2006 10:28 AM

You're not going to pay much less than that for shipping, as the package is big.

Try DVDAsian.com, or DVDHeaven.com, I don't know.

» Posted by X at July 15, 2006 05:21 PM

Sorry...I'm pining for more JuMong right now.... and since I have nowhere else to indulge my JuMong withdrawl...I'm going to do it here. I must have more JuMong. GAK. *throws temper tanturm* I'm two weeks behind everyone since I rent it at the video store in the USA, and all I want is to catch up to everyone. I don't really know why I'm addicted to this drama right now. I just am. The main character is just so...well, you can't help loving him. He's one of those characters you would call a total idiot affectionately and without the slightest hint of ill-will or malice.

Thanks X, for all your hard work! I don't really know how you do it...but I hope you don't stop! I love your JuMong reviews and commentary... helps me get through the week until I get my Ju Mong fix...

Invisible Man Choi Jang Soo will be extended by 4 epis, totalling 20 epis.

And looks like Alone in Love is again available at the US Yesasia site.

» Posted by creidesca at July 20, 2006 03:37 PM

I'm sorry to say that I'm really not crazy about Choi Jang Soo so far ... the writing is really not very good. I love Chae Shi Ra but the script is pretty awful so far. Maybe it'll get better but I'm not holding my breath.

» Posted by Cyberman at July 21, 2006 02:30 AM

omo, why'd they extend Choi jang soo?? err, please don't drag ..

cyberman.. i dunno about the writing, but so far the show makes me bawl.. like really BOO HOO ITS SO SAD I'M CRYING SO MUCH I HOPE MY EYES ARE OKAY type of sadness.. it makes me really melancholic.. hehe. what a nice change because lack of good dramas & good looking men actually made me crave for ultra violent & sad materials.. hehe. when i watched how jang soo got his head hit so many times in the first episode i was overjoyed that I've found THE DRAMA to watch.. i think :) like wow, this drama is both violent AND sad!

and also the acting is sheer brilliance.. i love yoo oh sung like i've never before. i mean in the past i always thought he was a good actor.. but boy as Choi Jang Soo he's like WOW WOW WOW amazing!

I'm downloading the episodes now.. wooo peeee ~~~~~

oh, X!!! I'm also overjoyed that you will be updating this section daily~~~ wooo peee doo~~ ;)

» Posted by ag at July 21, 2006 09:39 AM

wow...what a nice "Weather Update" you had up in the hub...kudos to you X and Cyberman for all the comments...though there are still bad K-dramas,thank God there are good K dramas out there...did I say Jumong hehehe..anyway I'll gonna check out The Invisible Man anytime soon so I'll reserve my comments for later

Hi Mr.X! So Kim Hyunjoo and Ji Jinhee are collaborating again? Is "The Imaginary Couple" confirmed or is it just rumors? Thanks for all the great reviews and keeping us on tabs with everything. I enjoy reading your forecast commentary.

I guess I'm weird, I enjoyed Fireworks and Great Inheritance, true they were not awesome dramas but they were good. I don't get this oh this cute actor is in it so it's good crap, either the drama storyline is good or not, the actor's faces are tertiary, their acting ability secondary... yes I know I've just ticked off all the females who only watch dramas not for the stories but for cute guys, but let's face it, a face is not the whole drama!

Which one is better? Jumong or Emperor of the Sea? I was bored stiff watching Emperor of the Sea. It wasn't good at all, imo.

- [2000~2001 MBC] 상도 (Sang Do) - Opening (Downloadable, 7mb, Windows Media)

....I've been seeing this series in Arirang since last year. Although I seldom watch this, but I like the concept of the story. This is MERCHANT OF JOSEON in ARIRANG, By the Way.

» Posted by RoxyBathory at July 6, 2007 08:00 AM

@ libby, Jumong is way better than Emperor of the Sea, eventhough the latter is very very very good! Jumong is way powerful.
