AUSTIN AMERICAN-STATESMAN

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT IMAGES

Mission Statement

Our slogan, "Working together, Making a Difference", reflects the commitment of the Austin American-Statesman as an active, connected and caring corporate citizen. The Community Development department serves as the initial point of contact for qualified non-profit organizations interested in sponsorship. We currently focus our giving in the areas of children and their families; literacy; the arts; building a stronger civic infrastructure; and journalism-related projects.

Each year the Austin American-Statesman donates more than $1.2 million through in-kind advertising space and cash donations to dozens of 501 (c)(3) non-profit organizations with a broad spectrum of social and civic needs. A prime example of one of our in-kind advertising space is Community Connections, published weekly in the Sunday Austin American-Statesman Life & Arts section. It highlights events and activities for scores of local non-profit organizations, as well as informing readers of a variety of volunteer opportunities.

In addition to our corporate contributions, our employees annually conduct a lively campaign which results in an employee gift of more than $140,000 to the United Way Capital Area. Plus, last year we enjoyed giving more than 1,000 visitors — most of them school age — tours of our facility.

We are your neighbors, and we are involved.

Signature Programs

The Statesman Capital 10K, began in 1976, is now in its 30th year and is Texas' largest 10K races and has become one of the well-known 10K races. In 1992 sponsorships were added to the event and, since then, over $1.58 million has been donated to local non-profit organizations.

Our biggest service campaign each year is the "Season for Caring" fund drive which introduces readers to families in need, and collects cash and in-kind contributions to help these families and hundreds of others like them. Since its inception in 1999, we have raised and funneled more than $2.26 million in cash and over $838,000 in in-kind goods & services through this annual campaign to local non-profit organizations.

Our Statesman Swim Safe for Austin Kids program provides at-risk children in kindergarten - 3rd grade basic swimming skills at local city and YMCA pools. The program is designed to encourage children to overcome their fear of water, to learn to swim and to give the gift of healthy outdoor exercise and fun.
