McConnell's opposition lining up as filing deadline for 2008 races draws near

HERALD-LEADER STAFF REPORT

Republican and Democratic candidates seeking to run for U.S. senator, any of the six U.S. representative positions, the 19 odd-numbered state Senate districts, any of the 100 state House districts or some select judicial posts must file with the secretary of state's office by 4 p.m. Tuesday.

So far the U.S. Senate race has attracted four Democrats with another potential candidate, Bruce Lunsford, still mulling the race. Incumbent Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell has drawn an opponent in the May 20 primary election.

All of Kentucky's congressional representatives but U.S. Rep. Hal Rogers of Somerset have drawn opponents.

About two dozen of the 100 state House seats and 11 of the 19 state Senate districts are contested so far.
