Attitudes To The Hunting Ban

16 February 2005

A MORI survey for BBC ONE's Countryfile programme has revealed that support for a ban on hunting with dogs in England and Wales has fallen from nearly two thirds of British adults to around half. The most recent question was asked in the context of a ban on hunting being due to come into force in England and Wales, subject to a legal challenge.

Whereas six years ago supporters of a hunting ban outnumbered opponents by nearly three to one (63% vs. 24%), the recent MORI/Countryfile survey found supporters of the ban now outnumber opponents by around 2:1 (47% vs. 26%).

The survey shows that the proportion expressly opposed to a hunting ban has remained about the same as in 1999, at around a quarter of the population (24% in 1999; 26% in 2005). People are, however, increasingly neutral, with a quarter of those asked saying they "neither support nor oppose" a ban (up from 11% in 1999).

In Scotland — where a ban on hunting with dogs came into force last year — the figures are: 52% support, 21% oppose and 26% neither support nor oppose — not significantly different from the results in England and Wales.

Technical details

Results from the MORI/Countryfile 2005 survey are based on interviews with 2,234 adults aged 18+ in 201 sample points across Great Britain. Interviews were completed face-to-face, in-home between 3-7 February 2005. Data are weighted to the national population profile.

Results from the MORI/Mail on Sunday 1999 survey are based on interviews with 801 adults aged 18+ across Great Britain. Interviews were conducted by telephone on 14-15 July 1999. Data are weighted to the known profile of Great Britain. For further details, see: Fox Hunting Poll
