We’re Through The Looking Glass, Here, People.

Okay, pay attention, because this one gets confusing.

Superheroes have been around for decades. We’ll begin with Superman, as one of the oldest and certainly most well known of the breed. Now, Superman began in 1938 as a comic-book character, an alien orphan from the planet Krypton. He was raised among humans and fought evil, but only in comic books. We, as readers, were observing Superman through a transparent yet impermeable barrier known as ‘the fourth wall.’ That is, Superman may inspire us, but otherwise he had no genuine no role in the real world. Later, there would be Superman television shows and movie series, but again, the fourth wall remained mostly intact.

A Foray Into The Seedy Underbelly Of Second Life by Earl B Morris

After reading Ariesgeeks latest web-blogger of futuristic ponderings about world of the computer attached to the WWW (World Wide Internet), specifically the use of graphic representations of the self called “avatars,” with which one may communicate to other people in US and Canada, I found myself inspired to give it a go. The software he was promoting was called Second Life, by Mattel I believe, and has proven very popular among the In Crowd for the past several months.

I’m no stranger to the WWW myself, so after drawing my great aunt a sitz bath, and putting Frederick, our little Cairn Terrier in the garage to urinate, I sat down and began to research the Second Life. I found a large community of people had web-bloggers of their own regarding this phenomenon, and one in particular attracted my interest – a review of Houses of Ill Repute that are available in the virtual arena. It seems that even here we are not immune to the influence of the seedy underbelly of humanity.

Fejogep Artist Chris McFann - He’s Probably Irish, But We Don’t Hold That Against Him by Lucien Spelman

Filed Under American Idol, Web 2.0, Comic Books, Youtube, Kathy Sierra, Myspace, Sanjaya, Twitter, Graphic Novel | Leave a Comment

Lucien: What is Fejogep?

Chris McFann: It is the single greatest story ever put to paper.

L: What made you want to take it on as a Graphic Novel?

CM: The fact that i have been drawing capes and spandex for so long that anything
without initials in the belt buckle is a big plus to me.

L: Tell us a little about your background.

CM: I have been doing odds and ends here and there for the past ten years or so.
Only recently has it gotten to the point that it has become more of a full time
thing for me.

L: Who are your influences as an artist?

CM: Mostly my friends… John Barnes, Sean Gengler and Clayton Crain.

L: How is it working with that Lucien Spelman? He’s one of my favorite writers,
and I’ve heard really great things about him, are they true, or is he an asshole?

CM: Both are true…. he is a great asshole.

L: Whats the market for a one-shot like this, and how does marketing a single issue
graphic novel differ from traditional marketing?

CM: Its like having an only child, it’s cheaper but you cant afford to screw this
one up cause it will be the one to take care of you when your old.

L: Do you see potential for a series if the issue does well?

CM: Hopefuly there isnt a series… we hope hollywood just plunks down a big ol’ pot
of gold for the movie rights. Then we will just retire and work as consultants with
hot secretaries and go to fancy parties. It that doesn’t pan out then a monthly gig
would work too.

L: What’s in your pockets right now?

CM: Nothing… I’m in my underware laying in bed having Dragonspeak type this while
I watch really bad movies and try to finish this page before Lucien sends his goons
to work me over.

L: Does this Graphic Novel have anything to do with Kathy Sierra, Twitter, MySpace,
YouTube, Web 2.0, American Idol, Or Sanjaya?

CM: No, but at least you can use those in the tags now!

The fine folks at Pandemonium Books & Games here in Boston (Cambridge actually, rah Havahd!) are in a bit of a pickle, so it’s time for our Geek Powers to activate to do some good. They explain it very well here, but in short they have been a gathering place for writers, gamers, and Geeks of all kinds for the past 17 years, and are now paying the price for their generosity of nature.

The owner, Tyler Stewart, has hosted gaming nights free of charge in his comfortable gaming room downstairs, and held readings from up and coming (and some very well known) sci-fi/fantasy/horror authors for many years. He’s also been one of the biggest proponents of independent magazine (BBT Magazine for instance), and book publishers in the area.

All he’s asking to stay out of the dumps and keep giving geeks a place to hide from the real world is to sell 1000 t-shirts. We here at BBT are going to donate a design for him, and we have some great designs around the corner.

So why don’t you stop by and buy a geeky t-shirt from a fellow who’s done so much for like minded people, and if you have a real heart, mention this on your on website or blog.

There’s more about Pandemonium here.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled blog.
