Principles and Organization
1976 April Environmental Conference formed, chaired by the President. Prevention of hazardous materials use and occupational health and safety promoted in Sony Group operations in Japan.
  May Environmental Science Center established. Hazardous waste materials and working environments of Group operations in Japan evaluated.
1985 April   Sony Corporation of America begins environmental audits.
1989 March Special committee convened to study measures to eliminate CFC use  
1990 August President's Policy on the Environment disseminated among Sony Corporation staff.  
  October Sony Environmental Conservation Committee organized.  
1991 October Policy for product assessment formulated.  
  November   Sony signs the business charter for sustainable development of the international chamber of commerce.
1992 December   Policy on environmental management established.
1993 January   Environmental Fund System, a program supporting development of environmental protection technologies, inaugurated.
  March Sony Global Environmental Policy and Environmental Action Program formulated.  
  April   Center for Environmental Technologies (CET) established at the Sony Research Center.
1994 February   Sony Environmental Award program launched.
  April Center for Environmental Technologies (CET) established at the Sony Research Center.  
  May   Greenplus Project to promote environmental consideration with respect to products launched.
  July Guidelines for acquiring ISO environmental certification established and introduced.  
1995 May   Sony Kohda Corporation becomes the first Sony company in Japan to acquire ISO14001 certification.
1996 July   Sony Deutschland Service Division becomes the first non-manufacturing site in the Sony Group to acquire ISO14001 certification.
  October Sony Environmental Action Program revised. Green Management 2000 formulated.  
1997 October Operation of Recycle Research Center in Ichinomiya initiated.  
  December   Four sites in Singapore become the first non-manufacturing sites in Asia to acquire ISO14001 certification.
1998 April Composition of Sony Environmental Conservation Committee revised to give each member a specific responsibility.  
  September Environmental R&D; laboratory established at Environmental Center Europe, Germany.  
  November Sony Environmental Action Program implemented uniformly across the Sony Group worldwide. "Green Management 2002" introduced.  
1999 February   Sony completes the process of acquiring ISO14001 certification at all 38 manufacturing sites in Japan.
  May   The Sony Eco Plaza environmental exhibition room is opened at Sony Headquarters.
2000 April   Environmental factors incorporated into Network Companies' evaluations. Guideline for the Environmental Risk Management. A fire risk survey program launched for European and Asian operations.
  September Sony China Environmental Conservation Committee established.  
  October Periodic environmental information disclosure involving advertising and publicity introduced. "eco info" mark introduced

2001 March Sony Mid-Term Environmental Action Program revised. Green Management 2005 formulated.  
  April   - Japan's Home Appliance Recycling Law became effective and the 14-plant recycling network of Green Cycle Corporation, where Sony is the principal shareholder, began processing four types of appliances.
- Environmental evaluation standards extended from Electronics to Game, Music and Pictures businesses.
  September   Sony began using the Green Power Certification System.
  October   PS one game console shipments temporarily halted in the Netherlands due to containing cadmium above the limit.
2002 March Sony Technical Standards, SS-00259 "Management Regulations for the Environment-related Substances to be Controlled which are included in Parts and Materials" formulated.  
  April   ISO 14001 certification process completed at all manufacturing sites worldwide.
  June   1st "Sony Group Environmental Month" initiated.
  July   "Green Partner Environmental Quality Approval Program" introduced.
2003 March A new system was introduced to increase the efficiency of Sony's environmental management through a high level of expertise in environmental issues concerning products and sites. The Institute for Environmental Research has also been established to develop medium- and long-term environmental management visions.  
  July Sony Mid-Term Environmental Targets "Green Management 2005" revised.  
  November Revised the Sony Environmental Vision
to the Sony Group Environmental Vision
2004 June   Acquisition of ISO14001 for the headquarters functions of Sony Group environmental management Commencement of a globally integrated environmental management system
2006 March   Completion of sift to the globally integrated environmental management system, based on ISO14001
  April Establishment of Green Management 2010  
  July   Sony's participation in the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF)'s Climate Savers Programme starts
