Helen McDonald Appeal Update
Fandom
July 31, 2007  •  Posted By Brigadier Bill
More than 6,000 pounds has been collected by fans as part of an appeal in memory of David Tennant's mother Helen McDonald who died recently.

BBC News reports that members of the fan site david-tennant.com have so far have donated more than 4,000 pounds to the collection, which is in aid of the ACCORD Hospice.

They also plan an auction to help raise more money for cancer research. Items up for auction include rare artwork and a 2 foot tall ceramic Dalek.

Tennant told the website, "At this difficult time, I can't tell you what it means that you are doing this."

He added: "Thanks to everyone who has been able to make a donation. I promise you, your money will be well spent."

The idea for the collection was first proposed by a group of Outpost Gallifrey Forum members. They have so far raised nearly 2,000 pounds.

Donations can still be made at justgiving.com. People who donate are asked not to mention David Tennant in the comments section, in order to protect his privacy.

A pensioner thought Kylie Minogue was a real-life waitress during filming for the Doctor Who Christmas special, reports BBC News today.

Minogue plays the role of Titanic waitress Astrid in Voyage of the Damned, and while filming was taking place outside Morgan's hotel in Swansea an elderly customer confused the singer for a member of staff.

An eyewitness said: "It was absolutely comical. Kylie is an international star but obviously this old dear didn't know who she was.

"She said to Kylie: 'Excuse me, love, is it too late for a cup of tea?'

"Kylie saw the funny side and just laughed."

FOOTNOTE: The Sun reported today that Minogue had been comforting David Tennant over the death of his mother from cancer.

According to a report at WhatsOnStage.com, the actor John Normington has died at the age of 70.

Normington was best known to Doctor Who fans for his highly-acclaimed role as the villain Trau Morgus in Peter Davison's final story as the Fifth Doctor, The Caves of Androzani, in 1984.

He later appeared again in the series in the Sylvester McCoy serial The Happiness Patrol in 1987, and finally guested in 2006's Ghost Machine, an episode of the Doctor Who spin-off series Torchwood.

Normington was a busy working actor right up until this year, appearing at the Old Vic opposite Robert Lindsay in The Entertainer. A former member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, he also appeared in television series such as Coronation Street, Yes, Prime Minister and Casualty.

Hollywood actor Kevin Spacey, the artistic director of the Old Vic, said in tribute: "We were honoured to have enjoyed John's company for as long as we had him. His spirit and influence remained throughout and now that same spirit joins the other great actors who have played the Old Vic stage, where he will always be remembered with admiration and affection.

"They don't make them like him any more. We send our love and condolences to John's partner, family and friends."

iF Magazine has an interview with BBC head of drama commissioning Julie Gardner in which she talks about a range of subjects concerning Doctor Who, Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures, all of which she also co-executive produces.

In the interview, she quashes speculation that Dennis Hopper will be appearing on Doctor Who. "That's an unfounded rumor I'm afraid. He's not going to be on the show. It was all over the place, but he's not coming," she says.

However, Gardner gives a strong indication that the Master will be returning.

"It would be rude not to, and he’s a great character. John Simm is amazing and I would go to work every day with him. His scenes were so much fun to do," she says.

Newsarama.com has announced that IDW will begin publishing a new title based on the tenth Doctor, with stories written by TV show script editor Gary Russell and art by Nick Roche.

IDW chief Chris Ryall told Newsarama that in addition to the new Tenth Doctor comic book, IDW would be reprinting classic Doctor Who comics drawn by Dave Gibbons, with all-new coloring.

Gary Russell told Newsarama's interviewer:
"Can't get enough Martha. As for Tennant, 'cos he's the current one, simple as that. It's about putting characters from one medium into a totally different, and utilizing the strengths (and weaknesses) the new medium has to offer. So I gain from a bigger budget, more extras and louder bangs, yet the storytelling has to be as concise, clever and charming as the TV show is, but in a wholly different way. I have now just scared myself beyond belief..."

" Old monsters are all very well, but using the big guns like Daleks, Cybermen, the Master - it's a bit gauche. If you're going to use recognizable elements from the show - and I think you should where the story allows it - [it should be] a story that enables you to go "oooh I could put MONSTER X in here, that'd be cool" over to "oooh I need to write a story about MONSTER X" now and again, because people like to spot elements they're familiar with, then they need to be fun. Our first issue does feature something from the current show, and a later issue or two features something from waaaaay back in the series history, but these things should be done sparingly or it's no longer an event, it's the norm. And normal is dull."
K9 Series Funding
Spinoffs
July 27, 2007  •  Posted By John Bowman
Australia's Film Finance Corporation has approved funding for the spin-off series featuring K9.

A news release says financial backing was agreed at the organisation's July board meeting, although the exact amount of money involved is unknown.

It says: "When we meet him in the new 26-part Australian kids' show K9, this highly intelligent creature is guarding an abandoned prison transportation craft."

The series, previously understood to have been called K9 Adventures and K9 - The Series, has been created and is being written by Doctor Who classic era writer Bob Baker, says the FFC.

TV distribution agent Park Entertainment says the half-hour episodes, to be made by Jetix Europe, will be live action and CGI.

The FFC is the Australian government's main agency for funding film and TV production in Australia.

UPDATE: C21 is reporting that Australia's Network Ten has also "come on board" the series.

The TV company will be paying a certain percentage of the production budget in return for rights to air the programme once it is made.

The show was understood to be already in pre-production but C21 quotes Park Entertainment chief executive Jim Howell as saying it was hoped the show would be in pre-production by October.

Australian media coverage of Doctor Who and Torchwood continues. Kelsey Munro of the Sydney Morning Herald previews 'Daleks in Manhattan', which Ian Cuthbertson of the Weekend Australian describes as 'finely made, with the production values of a feature film and starring those seemingly eternal 'Doctor Who' villains in top form.' Meanwhile Robin Oliver, also of the Sydney Morning Herald, writes that 'Evolution of the Daleks', 'features the most spectacular Dalek action in Doctor Who's history' and that 'writer Helen Raynor provides unusually strong dialogue, which David Tennant employs with great effect.' Fergus Shiel also notes Tennant's amusing appearance on Parkinson on the same Saturday night (28 July, ABC, 10.15pm) where he is introduced as 'Doctor Wow!'.

The Melbourne Age's AnnMaree Bellman in previewing Countrycide says 'it's Famous Five Go Camping meets The Blair Witch Chainsaw Massacre'. Ian Cuthbertson also notes that this episode has 'a terrifically creepy beginning to an equally creepy episode . . . Lonely crofters cottages will never look innocent again.' Naoko Mori has also started appearing in Channel Ten 'I believe . . . seriously' promotional trailers, in addition to the similar Ten trailers featuring John Barrowman and Eve Myles.

Meanwhile in the Aussie ratings, 'Daleks in Manhattan' scored 839,000 viewers in the 5 major capitals, coming second to the Dame Edna Treatment on Channel Nine. Meanwhile, Torchwood's 'Countrycide' scored 673,000 viewers, these ratings probably affected by a twenty minute delay in its start due to an overlong episode of the local version of Big Brother. The Australian media continues its coverage of Doctor Who and Torchwood. Tim Hunter of the Melbourne Age interviews Freema Agyeman and Fergus Shiel in previewing Gridlock says 'David Tennant's second series as the Time Lord is shaping up as one of the best.'

Meanwhile Adam Richard, writes in the Age's Green Guide, that Torchwood is 'a bit of spooky sexy sci-fi fun. Like all British drama, it still has a bit of tongue lodged in its cheek, so it's not as overwrought as 'Supernatural' or 'Lost'. Plus it features scads of girl-on-girl action for the boys, boy-on-boy action for the girls and boy-on-girl-on-purple-smoke-creature action for the exhaust fans that might be watching.'

The Sydney Morning Herald's Keith Austin also writes of Torchwood's 'Small Worlds' that it has 'a wonderful but doomed love story, terrific titles, good use of music and the CGI for the scary fairies is marvellous. Nice to see, too, that they didn't shy away from a difficult ending.'

Meanwhile in the Aussie ratings, 'The Shakespeare Code' scored 806,000 viewers in the 5 major capitals while 'Gridlock' rated 792,000 viewers. Both episodes were up against very popular repeats of Harry Potter movies. Meanwhile, Torchwood's 'Cyberwoman' scored 756,000 viewers and 'Small Worlds', up against the season final of 'Brothers and Sisters' on a rival network, scored 768,000 viewers. In other Torchwood news, the Sun has reported that New Zealand-born actor Alan Dale will be appearing as a "baddie" in Torchwood's second series. Dale is known for his roles in the Australian soap opera Neighbours and several US television series including The O.C., Lost and, most recently, comedy series Ugly Betty.

The first series of Torchwood will air on BBC America beginning September 8; the second series debuts on BBC Two early in 2008. The press release is below (click on the spoiler tag; there are very mild spoilers including a couple of minor story points.
Torchwood, the smash-hit thriller drama created by Doctor Who writer Russell T Davies, is currently filming for a new series which will be shown on BBC Two early next year.

Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman), Gwen (Eve Myles), Owen (Burn Gorman), Tosh (Naoko Mori) and Ianto (Gareth David-Lloyd) return as the close-knit team of investigators solving alien and human crimes as they delve into the underworld of modern day Cardiff.

The high-octane storylines, filmed in and around Cardiff, include Torchwood's encounter with a rogue Time Agent; a tragic time-slip from World War One; and a memory-thief who uncovers long-forgotten secrets among the entire team.

Making a special guest appearance in the first episode is James Marsters who starred as Spike, the punk-goth vampire, in Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel.

Commenting on his role in Torchwood, James says: "I am a huge fan of Doctor Who and Torchwood so it was me who knocked on their door.

"I am really excited about the character I am playing. I can't say too much about him, except he is naughty and a bit of a psychopath."

Later on in the run Alan Dale makes a star appearance. Alan is currently appearing in Ugly Betty as Bradford Meade and he is well known for his roles in The O.C., Lost, The West Wing and as Jim Robinson in the Australian hit soap Neighbours.

He said: "I am thrilled to be working on Torchwood and delighted to be in England again. I am a huge fan of British television drama."

Another familiar face among the surprise guest stars is Doctor Who's gorgeous companion Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman) who brings her time-travelling expertise and medical skills to the team halfway through the series.

She says: "I'm really looking forward to working with the Torchwood team and can't wait to start filming.

"It's a huge new challenge and a wonderful opportunity to develop and expand the character of Martha Jones."

Russell T Davies said: "Filming is well underway in Cardiff, and we're aiming to make the show bigger and bolder than ever, as we move to our new home on BBC Two.

"It's too early to start giving things away, but we've got some amazing guest stars, fearsome new aliens, and compelling new storylines that will push the Torchwood team further than ever before."

The 13-part series is written by Chris Chibnall, Catherine Tregenna, Helen Raynor, James Moran, Joseph Lidster, Peter J Hammond, JC Wilsher and Matt Jones.

Created by Davies, with Chris Chibnall as co-producer and lead writer, the first series, which aired on BBC Three last year, achieved the channel's highest ever ratings – with an audience of 2.5 million for the first episode.

Torchwood is executive produced by Russell T Davies and Julie Gardner, Head of Drama in BBC Wales. The producer is Richard Stokes.

Actor and voice artiste Peter Tuddenham has died at the age of 88 after a short illness.

His vocal talents were used in Doctor Who for The Ark in Space, The Masque of Mandragora and Time and the Rani, but he will also be well-known to cult TV fans for providing the voices of Zen, Orac and Slave in Blake's 7, which was created by Terry Nation.

In addition, Tuddenham was in the Kaldor City audio spin-offs Occam's Razor and Death's Head, which were Doctor Who/Blake's 7 crossovers produced by Magic Bullet.

First Glimpse at Voyage of the Damned
General TV Series News
July 11, 2007  •  Posted By Paul Hayes
The BBC has today released the first official publicity photograph from the forthcoming 2007 Doctor Who Christmas special, Voyage of the Damned, production of which began in Cardiff earlier this week. The image, seen at right, shows David Tennant as the Doctor along with the episode's main guest star Kylie Minogue, who according to a report on the official BBC Doctor Who website will be playing a character named Astrid, a waitress on board the Titanic. A larger version of the publicity picture can be found on the same page.

The BBC report also confirms casting details for the special, including two names reported earlier by Outpost Gallifrey, classic series veterans Geoffrey Palmer (who plays the Titanic's Captain) and Clive Swift. Additional actors in the episode are Gray O'Brien, Debbie Chazen, Clive Rowe, Russell Tovey, George Costigan and Jimmy Vee, previously seen in the programme as the Moxx of Balhoon in series one.

Reports on the publicity picture can also be found at BBC News Online, The Sun, The Times, the Daily Mail and This is London.

The MediaGuardian's report on the image runs in their Media Monkey diary column (requires free registration to view), which also quotes BBC One controller Peter Fincham on the subject of Doctor Who from today's press launch for his channel's forthcoming autumn season line-up. "Today at the BBC1 autumn launch the channel's Cyber controller Peter Fincham dodged a question about the casting of Catherine Tate, depriving viewers of Martha Jones, one of the few black role models on television. 'They want to top each previous series with the new one,' Fincham told hacks. 'I wouldn't put pressure on Russell in any way to do anything,' Fincham said. We kind of guessed that from the overblown season finale this year, Pete."

The Sun has reported today that Geoffrey Palmer has been lined up to guest star in the 2007 Christmas special, Voyage of the Damned. It reports that he will be playing the Captain of the Titanic, although it is unclear whether this character is based on the real Captain of the liner, Edward Smith.

Geoffrey Palmer is best known for his roles in the comedy series As Time Goes By and Butterflies, as well as his appearances in a variety of films, including Mrs Brown, The Madness of King George and Tomorrow Never Dies.

He has previously made two appearances in Doctor Who in the Jon Pertwee stories Doctor Who and the Silurians and The Mutants. His son Charles Palmer directed four recent episodes of Doctor Who: Smith and Jones, The Shakespeare Code, Human Nature and The Family of Blood.
National Television Awards Voting Begins

Early voting has been opened for the 2007 National Television Awards, sponsored by ITV. Both David Tennant and Freema Agyeman are among the long list of nominees for Most Popular Actor and Actress, respectively, while Doctor Who is once again up for Most Popular Drama. Torchwood also receives the Most Popular Drama nomination, while its star John Barrowman is nominated for Most Popular Actor. John Simm from the last three episodes of this past series is also nominated as Most Popular Actor for his work on "Life on Mars".

The NTA preliminary vote carries over to the final vote later in the year as the nominees' list is whittled down, with the presentation of the awards to take place in November. Doctor Who has been a big winner at the past two years' NTAs, the series taking both drama series awards and Tennant, Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper all winning in their categories.

Voting takes place at the National Television Awards website.
Sea Devils Fort For Sale

The fort that was used in the filming of The Sea Devils is up for sale.

A report in today's edition of Portsmouth daily paper The News says No Man's Land Fort - built in the 1860s as a sea defence against a feared invasion by the French that never happened - is on the market after the collapse of a commercial property finance business and the jailing of its boss.

The exterior of the construction - which is in the Solent, off the south coast of England - doubled as an abandoned sea fort when the Doctor Who crew went to Portsmouth in October 1971 for extensive location filming on the Jon Pertwee six-parter.

Now converted into a hotel plus events and hospitality venue, it is reported to be worth millions, and administrator KPMG says it is open to offers.

The Media Guardian has placed Doctor Who's executive producer Russell T Davies as the 15th most powerful player in the industry in the UK. Davies, who was placed 28th last year, is described as the person who made family TV drama cool again with his award-winning reinvention of Doctor Who and who put BBC1 back on top in the Saturday night ratings war.

The Tenth Doctor himself, David Tennant, is 24th and described as the most powerful actor in television. The Media Guardian says the definition of a star is someone who can get a project off the ground simply by agreeing to be in it. Tennant is that man.

Also listed is Jana Bennett the BBC's director of vision who comes in 11th.

Current BBC1 controller Peter Fincham is 12th and the Director General of the BBC, Mark Thompson was 3rd in the list.

Christmas Special Cast Update
General TV Series News
July 8, 2007  •  Posted By John Bowman
Clive Swift has been cast in the forthcoming episode Voyage of the Damned, the 2007 Doctor Who Christmas special, according to a report in the Jewish Telegraph.

The actor is no stranger to Doctor Who, having played Jobel in the 1985 serial Revelation of the Daleks starring Colin Baker.

He is most famous, however, for the role of Richard Bucket (pronounced "Bouquet" - a long-running gag), the hen-pecked husband of Patricia Routledge's Hyacinth in the BBC TV comedy Keeping Up Appearances.

In the Telegraph piece, Swift says of his Christmas special character: "It's a lovely part and I'll be working with Kylie Minogue, who I was introduced to at the read-through, and David Tennant, who is a terrific actor."

Swift also appeared in the BBC TV drama Born and Bred, which ran from 2002 to 2004 and was created by Chris Chibnall, the co-producer of Torchwood.

Chibnall was consulting/executive producer of Born and Bred, which also ranked Phil Collinson among its producers.

The UKTV Drama channel asks Who is the Greatest Doctor Who? next weekend, when it shows stories featuring each of the ten Doctors.

The channel's website features clips, fact files and a voting form to register your choice.

Stories being shown are An Unearthly Child, The Chase (episodes 1 and 5), Inferno (episodes 1 and 7), The Three Doctors, The Deadly Assassin, The Caves of Androzani, Attack fo the Cybermen, The Two Doctors, The Curse of Fenric, the 1996 Doctor Who TV movie, Rose, The Empty Child, The Doctor Dances, The Parting of the Ways, New Earth, School Reunion, Army of Ghosts and Doomsday.

The Sunday Times, in reviewing the weekend, says William Hartnell's portrayal of the Doctor is a wonderfully cantankerous antidote to David Tennant's jovial space-prankster. It lists among the weekend's other treats, repeat outings for 1970's brilliantly sinister Inferno, Peter Davison's finest adventure (The Caves of Androzani) and the genuinely unnerving The Deadly Assassin, in which Tom Baker loses his marbles

David Tennant Takes On Hamlet?

The Daily Mail reports that David Tennant is in negotiation with the Royal Shakespeare Company to take on the role of Hamlet - a role he has said he wishes to play in the past - next summer.

Says journalist Baz Bamigboye: "The plan being developed by RSC artistic chief Michael Boyd is for Mr Tennant to play Hamlet in a production he wants to direct next summer. The exact timing will depend on whether the actor will do a fourth batch of episodes as the Converse All Stars-sporting Doctor. Tennant has been offered several high-profile TV, film and stage parts since his interpretation of Dr Who found so much favour with audiences and critics. Indeed, he recently completed filming a TV movie for HBO called Einstein And Eddington opposite Andy Serkis and Rebecca Hall."

BBC Annual Report
Notes
July 3, 2007  •  Posted By Paul Hayes
Doctor Who is cited several times as a prime example of BBC output in the corporation's annual report, jointly published today by the BBC Trust, the body which oversees the organisation and replaced the defunct Board of Governors of the BBC in January this year, and the BBC Executive, which runs the corporation editorially.

The series is mentioned in the BBC Trust's section of the report as a "genuinely popular success" by Sir Michael Lyons, the Trust's chairman. In the BBC Executive's report, the programme receives numerous mentions - these include praise for being one of the corporation's "most loved dramas" during a section highlighting the work of BBC Wales, which is also commended for the spin-off series Torchwood; the report described BBC Wales as a "world-class production centre".

The section dealing with BBC One's drama output opens with: "It has been a year of drama resurgence on BBC One, starting the year with a new Doctor Who, played brilliantly by David Tennant. The series exceeded all expectations and became a national talking point."

The series is also mentioned for its profitability - "Profits from global TV sales were up 19% to £40.2million, driven particularly by contemporary drama such as Doctor Who."

The report does, however, admit that: "Not everything we try works. The TARDISODES, one-minute Doctor Who episodes via mobile phones and bbc.co.uk, were not the hit we expected although they were popular on broadband."

Official: Kylie Minogue in 2007 Christmas Special
General TV Series News
July 2, 2007  •  Posted By Shaun Lyon
Confirming long-standing rumors in the British tabloid press, Australian pop princess Kylie Minogue will join the Doctor in the 2007 Christmas Special, Voyage of the Damned, according to a press release issued this evening on Minogue's official website and now corroborated by the official Doctor Who website.

The 39-year-old actress and singer will have a "major lead role" in the hour-long special, says Minogue's website, which Tuesday morning's edition of The Sun identifies as a waitress aboard the RMS Titanic. Minogue's official site notes that "The production team has also confirmed that the storyline will follow on directly from the ending of series three where viewers witnessed The Titanic crash through the Tardis walls..."

Minogue has one of the longest and most successful careers as a performer in contemporary pop music, and in Europe and Australia she has become one of her generation's most recognisable celebrities and sex symbols. Says Minogue, "It is an incredible thrill to be joining David and the entire Dr Who production for this year's Christmas special. Dr Who enjoys a unique history and it is going to be very exciting to be a part of that."

The episode has been written by Doctor Who's executive producer and head writer Russell T Davies, who noted that "We are delighted and excited to announce that Kylie Minogue will be joining the Doctor. Doctor Who Christmas specials are always a joy and we feel very confident that this will be the most ambitious and best Christmas episode yet."

The news was originally embargoed by BBC press until midnight Monday night; such sites as Digital Spy and the Daily Mail reported the story before pulling it off their feeds later. Sites later began reprinting the article as of the embargo deadline.

Update: BBC News are now reporting the news as the main story in its entertainment section. There is also a video report by arts correspondent David Sillito.

BBC Bomb Apology
Torchwood

The BBC have issued an apology for sparking terror fears with an explosion in Cardiff city centre during filming for Torchwood.

The explosion was staged next to the Millennium Stadium in an old courtroom building. Because of the latest terrorist attacks in Glasgow and London, the BBC issued warnings one hour before the blast on local radio and police had issued an alert two hours before the blast was due to go off.

Passers-by were horrified by the explosion which sent a huge pall of smoke over the city centre.

A BBC production member said:

"The filming was planned many weeks ago before the recent terrorist incidents."

"We had informed neighbouring businesses but could not tell everyone who might be in the city centre. We apologise if anyone was frightened."

Doctor Who dropped at London Pride 2007
Special Events
July 1, 2007  •  Posted By Marcus
Dr Who fans who endured very wet weather in London yesterday were disappointed when the organisers of London Pride 2007 had to pull the plug on the season finale, Last of the Time Lords, due to end the event on a large outdoor screen.

Hundreds of people gathered in Trafalgar Square to celebrate gay pride and were looking forward to seeing the show on the big screen when, at approximately 7.45pm, an apologetic host told the crowd that the programme had been cancelled.

The fans who had sat in the rain for a number of hours with the promise that "Doctor Who would be airing shortly" were left severely disappointed.

It was initially blamed on a faulty DVD player, but later transpired there was an 8pm curfew imposed on the event by Westminster Council and the police which meant there was no time for the broadcast.

Scheduling delays also lead to confusion over timing and some Who fans missed appearances by John Barrowman and Freema Agyeman (a typo in a timetable flyer amusingly listed her as Freda Agyeman). Altogether, a wet and disappointing day out in London for Who fans.

Submitted by Mark Nisbitt. Thanks also to Bruce Walcroft and Andrew Warrilow.
