July 2007Helen McDonald Appeal Update Fandom July 31, 2007 • Posted By Brigadier Bill More than 6,000 pounds has been collected by fans as part of an appeal in memory of David Tennant's mother Helen McDonald who died recently.BBC News reports that members of the fan site david-tennant.com have so far have donated more than 4,000 pounds to the collection, which is in aid of the ACCORD Hospice. They also plan an auction to help raise more money for cancer research. Items up for auction include rare artwork and a 2 foot tall ceramic Dalek. Tennant told the website, "At this difficult time, I can't tell you what it means that you are doing this." He added: "Thanks to everyone who has been able to make a donation. I promise you, your money will be well spent." The idea for the collection was first proposed by a group of Outpost Gallifrey Forum members. They have so far raised nearly 2,000 pounds. Donations can still be made at justgiving.com. People who donate are asked not to mention David Tennant in the comments section, in order to protect his privacy. Minogue Mistake By OAP General TV Series News July 31, 2007 • Posted By John BowmanA pensioner thought Kylie Minogue was a real-life waitress during filming for the Doctor Who Christmas special, reports BBC News today.
Minogue plays the role of Titanic waitress Astrid in Voyage of the Damned, and while filming was taking place outside Morgan's hotel in Swansea an elderly customer confused the singer for a member of staff. An eyewitness said: "It was absolutely comical. Kylie is an international star but obviously this old dear didn't know who she was. "She said to Kylie: 'Excuse me, love, is it too late for a cup of tea?' "Kylie saw the funny side and just laughed." FOOTNOTE: The Sun reported today that Minogue had been comforting David Tennant over the death of his mother from cancer. Normington was best known to Doctor Who fans for his highly-acclaimed role as the villain Trau Morgus in Peter Davison's final story as the Fifth Doctor, The Caves of Androzani, in 1984. He later appeared again in the series in the Sylvester McCoy serial The Happiness Patrol in 1987, and finally guested in 2006's Ghost Machine, an episode of the Doctor Who spin-off series Torchwood. Normington was a busy working actor right up until this year, appearing at the Old Vic opposite Robert Lindsay in The Entertainer. A former member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, he also appeared in television series such as Coronation Street, Yes, Prime Minister and Casualty. Hollywood actor Kevin Spacey, the artistic director of the Old Vic, said in tribute: "We were honoured to have enjoyed John's company for as long as we had him. His spirit and influence remained throughout and now that same spirit joins the other great actors who have played the Old Vic stage, where he will always be remembered with admiration and affection. "They don't make them like him any more. We send our love and condolences to John's partner, family and friends." Gardner Rules Hopper Out Online July 30, 2007 • Posted By John BowmaniF Magazine has an interview with BBC head of drama commissioning Julie Gardner in which she talks about a range of subjects concerning Doctor Who, Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures, all of which she also co-executive produces.
In the interview, she quashes speculation that Dennis Hopper will be appearing on Doctor Who. "That's an unfounded rumor I'm afraid. He's not going to be on the show. It was all over the place, but he's not coming," she says. However, Gardner gives a strong indication that the Master will be returning. "It would be rude not to, and he’s a great character. John Simm is amazing and I would go to work every day with him. His scenes were so much fun to do," she says. We will report more details as we receive them.WETA Collectibles Information Merchandise July 27, 2007 • Posted By Jarrod Cooper This week at the San Diego Comic Convention, Weta Collectibles revealed the prototypes of the initial two pieces that will start their Doctor Who statue range. The first piece, titled 'Dalek', is from the Doctor Who episode of the same name, featured in the new series in 2005. The second piece, titled 'Cybercontroller', is from the Age of Steel episode from the second series in 2006. Two more statues are forthcoming, but have not yet been revealed. Roche, who has previously drawn IDW's Transformers comic, told CBR News that as a teenager he watched repeats of Jon Pertwee stories, but considers the new series his favorite version of Doctor Who. He also talks about the challenges of drawing David Tennant.
The comic book will star the Tenth Doctor and Martha. The CBR story has more background from Roche and series writer Gary Russell. November 6th sees a trio of releases in North America. Arc of Infinity and Time-Flight are the classic series releases, with The Complete Series Three of the new series rounding out the day. Series Three is currently slated for release in the UK on November 27th, although the BBC Shop is listing a November 5th release date. January 8th will see the DVD release of Torchwood: Series One in North America. She begins and ends by speaking in Farsi, but for the rest of the eight-minute-plus piece she speaks in English that is dubbed into Farsi. Agyeman's mother is Iranian and the actress revealed during her interview on Friday Night With Jonathan Ross in May that the tattoo on her right arm includes the word "free" in Farsi in recognition of her heritage. The Nazad Conspiracy stars classic Doctor Who actors Nicholas Courtney and Terry Molloy in a tale of supernatural adventure set in 1930s London. The first episode will be broadcast 1800-1830 on Saturday 25th August in BBC 7's 7th Dimension sci-fi slot. Christmas 1936. Ghost story writer Professor Dunning (Terry Molloy) doesn't believe in the supernatural. So he's more than surprised when an invisible winged demon appears in his drawing room. Doctor Who Comic Merchandise July 27, 2007 • Posted By Jarrod Cooper Newsarama.com has announced that IDW will begin publishing a new title based on the tenth Doctor, with stories written by TV show script editor Gary Russell and art by Nick Roche.IDW chief Chris Ryall told Newsarama that in addition to the new Tenth Doctor comic book, IDW would be reprinting classic Doctor Who comics drawn by Dave Gibbons, with all-new coloring. Gary Russell told Newsarama's interviewer: "Can't get enough Martha. As for Tennant, 'cos he's the current one, simple as that. It's about putting characters from one medium into a totally different, and utilizing the strengths (and weaknesses) the new medium has to offer. So I gain from a bigger budget, more extras and louder bangs, yet the storytelling has to be as concise, clever and charming as the TV show is, but in a wholly different way. I have now just scared myself beyond belief..." " Old monsters are all very well, but using the big guns like Daleks, Cybermen, the Master - it's a bit gauche. K9 Series Funding Spinoffs July 27, 2007 • Posted By John Bowman Australia's Film Finance Corporation has approved funding for the spin-off series featuring K9.A news release says financial backing was agreed at the organisation's July board meeting, although the exact amount of money involved is unknown. It says: "When we meet him in the new 26-part Australian kids' show K9, this highly intelligent creature is guarding an abandoned prison transportation craft." The series, previously understood to have been called K9 Adventures and K9 - The Series, has been created and is being written by Doctor Who classic era writer Bob Baker, says the FFC. TV distribution agent Park Entertainment says the half-hour episodes, to be made by Jetix Europe, will be live action and CGI. The FFC is the Australian government's main agency for funding film and TV production in Australia. UPDATE: C21 is reporting that Australia's Network Ten has also "come on board" the series. The TV company will be paying a certain percentage of the production budget in return for rights to air the programme once it is made. The show was understood to be already in pre-production but C21 quotes Park Entertainment chief executive Jim Howell as saying it was hoped the show would be in pre-production by October. Mrs McDonald was a voluntary worker at the hospice for many years and it was where she was cared for in her final days. Alan Siler One of the New Series' most popular monsters, the Ood, are scheduled to reappear in the Fourth Series, according to the Times Online and confirmed on the Official Site. The Tenth Doctor (David Tennant) and Donna (Catherine Tate) will encounter the fearsome aliens in an episode called "Planet of the Ood". Show runner Russell T. Davies commented: "We're delighted the Ood are making a welcome return to Doctor Who. They were last seen falling into a black hole back in series two and we think it's only fair for the viewers to find out what the Ood have to say for themselves. Donna is certainly in for a shock." Meanwhile in the Aussie ratings, 'Daleks in Manhattan' scored 839,000 viewers in the 5 major capitals, coming second to the Dame Edna Treatment on Channel Nine. Meanwhile, Torchwood's 'Countrycide' scored 673,000 viewers, these ratings probably affected by a twenty minute delay in its start due to an overlong episode of the local version of Big Brother. It will be the first time it has been available unedited. Key To Time DVD Extras DVD and Video July 23, 2007 • Posted By John BowmanThe official programme website has released details of the extensive extras on the forthcoming seven-disc Key To Time DVD box set release in the UK.
The six stories that comprised the 16th season, which aired in the UK between September 1978 and February 1979 and starred Tom Baker as the Doctor and Mary Tamm as Romana, will be released on September 24. The extras will include a documentary looking at the tenure of producer Graham Williams, deleted scenes and outtakes, excerpts from Blue Peter, Nationwide and Pebble Mill At One, location visits, Tom Baker reading five stories from the 1978 series Late Night Story, and the festive sketch recorded on the set of season finale The Armageddon Factor for the 1978 BBC Christmas Tape. Tennant's mother, Helen McDonald, died on Sunday, July 15th after a long battle with cancer. She was 67, and was a founding member of Paisley's ACCORD Hospice, where she spent her final days. The funeral will take place at Renfrew North with the Very Rev. James Simpson -- a chaplain to Queen Elizabeth II -- officiating. Filming is expected to resume next week for the Christmas special which will premiere on Dec. 25 on BBC One. The fourth season of "Doctor Who" will air in early 2008, with the third season currently airing Friday nights in the United States on SciFi Channel. The Kids Are Alright is a primetime show in which adults battle super-smart kids. The new show will see a team of seven brainy kids battling against four adults in a series of challenges. For every event the adults win, they pocket thousands. The kids can also get top prizes. The show is being made as a pilot but will become a series if it goes well. No word yet on air date and time. They feature an alien played by Jimmy Vee, who has previously appeared in The End of the World and Aliens of London as the Moxx of Balhoon and the space pig respectively. He refuses to say too much about the part but calls his character "naughty and a bit of a psychopath". Also interviewed is Alan Dale, who has recently appeared in the US in Lost, The O.C., Ugly Betty and The West Wing.  Sarah Jane Will Air In Autumn Spinoffs July 17, 2007 • Posted By John Bowman The BBC has confirmed that spin-off series The Sarah Jane Adventures will be broadcast this autumn.A press office story about the rebranding of CBBC says that the show will be part of the autumn season. A precise date for when The Sarah Jane Adventures will start is yet to be given. The series will comprise five two-part stories. The new look for CBBC, designed to attract a wider audience of children aged six to 12, will be unveiled at the end of the summer. Barrowman informed the press that the second season of Torchwood would delve more in to Captain Jack's complicated back story.
"You don't know the exact date when Jack returned yet," Barrowman said. "We do know he was left on Satellite Five [at the end of season one of Doctor Who]. He was brought back to life. He then came back to Earth and arrived back in another time and had to live through it to get to the point where the Doctor came back. In [season] two of Torchwood, there's some of that revealed." Barrowman also briefly discusses the way other characters will change and guest appearances in the series. Torchwood's first season will begin airing on BBC America on Sept. 8 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. While on the BBC1 show, he talked about his dogs Lewis and Tiger - the latter of whom was a Dogs Trust rescue animal originally called Tegan. He told interviewer Selina Scott that he and partner Scott Gill decided to give a pet a home rather than swap rings for their civil partnership so went to the Dogs Trust - where a dog called Tegan had just been taken. Despite being there to promote his own series Jekyll there were questions concerning the future of Doctor Who. He particularly addressed rumors that the possible departure of Russell T. Davies at the end of series four would also be an end to the series. "Here's an answer that people should listen to. No broadcaster lets go of a show like Doctor Who. They'd have to be out of their f---ing minds."
Moffat goes on to mention the popularity of the series and Outpost Gallifrey but neither confirms nor denies rumors he would replace Davies. Torchwood Interviews, Casting Torchwood July 16, 2007 • Posted By Josiah RoweJohn Barrowman recently spoke to American television journalists at a BBC America panel promoting Torchwood; in conjunction, the BBC Press Office has released a press release about developments for the second series, which is reproduced below.Details of the panel, and concurrent interviews with Barrowman, can be found on blogs affiliated with the Chicago Tribune, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and Multichannel News. In the Chicago Tribune interview, Barrowman describes a scene between Captain Jack and the character played by James Marsters as "so hot, so horny, so violent..." and concludes with a phrase the Tribune's reporter couldn't get past her editor. SCI FI WIRE has more details about Marsters' appearance. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's television reporter also mentions Barrowman in her blog, but focuses on his Milwaukee-based sister Carole Barrowman, who is helping her brother write his autobiography. In other Torchwood news, the Sun has reported that New Zealand-born actor Alan Dale will be appearing as a "baddie" in Torchwood's second series. Dale is known for his roles in the Australian soap opera Neighbours and several US television series including The O.C., Lost and, most recently, comedy series Ugly Betty. The first series of Torchwood will air on BBC America beginning September 8; the second series debuts on BBC Two early in 2008. The actor is no stranger to Doctor Who, having played Jobel in the 1985 serial Revelation of the Daleks starring Colin Baker. He is most famous, however, for the role of Richard Bucket (pronounced "Bouquet" - a long-running gag), the hen-pecked husband of Patricia Routledge's Hyacinth in the BBC TV comedy Keeping Up Appearances. In the Telegraph piece, Swift says of his Christmas special character: "It's a lovely part and I'll be working with Kylie Minogue, who I was introduced to at the read-through, and David Tennant, who is a terrific actor." Swift also appeared in the BBC TV drama Born and Bred, which ran from 2002 to 2004 and was created by Chris Chibnall, the co-producer of Torchwood. Episode one, Smith and Jones, then follows at 7.50pm on Friday 13th July. Doctor Who Confidential is also being repeated, sometimes the full forty-minute version rather than the cut-down one. The first showing is immediatlly after Smith and Jones. Those who missed the 45-minute compilation of all the episodes of the Totally Doctor Who animated series, The Infinite Quest, can catch it again when it is repeated on the CBBC channel at 5pm on Sunday 8th July. Finally fans of the original Doctor may want to catch Togas on TV on BBC Four next Wednesday 11th July at 10.30pm. Says journalist Baz Bamigboye: "The plan being developed by RSC artistic chief Michael Boyd is for Mr Tennant to play Hamlet in a production he wants to direct next summer. The exact timing will depend on whether the actor will do a fourth batch of episodes as the Converse All Stars-sporting Doctor. The time-travelling voodoo cult Faction Paradox first appeared in Miles' Doctor Who novel Alien Bodies. The Faction subsequently featured in several BBC books before obtaining their own novel series, audio plays, and comics.
Newtons Sleep by Daniel O'Mahony will be the first Faction Paradox release from Random Static, and is scheduled for publication in late 2007. Catherine Tate Returns to Doctor Who for Series Four General TV Series News July 4, 2007 • Posted By Paul Hayes The official BBC Doctor Who website has announced that comedienne and actress Catherine Tate, who guest starred in the 2006 Christmas episode The Runaway Bride, is to return to the role of Donna Noble as a full-time companion of the Doctor throughout the fourth series of Doctor Who in 2008.Executive producer Russell T Davies is quoted by the site as saying: "Catherine was an absolute star in The Runaway Bride and we are delighted that one of Britain's greatest talents has agreed to join us for the fourth series. BBC Annual Report Notes July 3, 2007 • Posted By Paul Hayes Doctor Who is cited several times as a prime example of BBC output in the corporation's annual report, jointly published today by the BBC Trust, the body which oversees the organisation and replaced the defunct Board of Governors of the BBC in January this year, and the BBC Executive, which runs the corporation editorially.The series is mentioned in the BBC Trust's section of the report as a "genuinely popular success" by Sir Michael Lyons, the Trust's chairman. In the BBC Executive's report, the programme receives numerous mentions - these include praise for being one of the corporation's "most loved dramas" during a section highlighting the work of BBC Wales, which is also commended for the spin-off series Torchwood; the report described BBC Wales as a "world-class production centre". Official: Kylie Minogue in 2007 Christmas Special General TV Series News July 2, 2007 • Posted By Shaun Lyon Confirming long-standing rumors in the British tabloid press, Australian pop princess Kylie Minogue will join the Doctor in the 2007 Christmas Special, Voyage of the Damned, according to a press release issued this evening on Minogue's official website and now corroborated by the official Doctor Who website.The 39-year-old actress and singer will have a "major lead role" in the hour-long special, says Minogue's website, which Tuesday morning's edition of The Sun identifies as a waitress aboard the RMS Titanic. Minogue's official site notes that "The production team has also confirmed that the storyline will follow on directly from the ending of series three where viewers witnessed The Titanic crash through the Tardis walls..." Minogue has one of the longest and most successful careers as a performer in contemporary pop music, and in Europe and Australia she has become one of her generation's most recognisable celebrities and sex symbols. Says Minogue, "It is an incredible thrill to be joining David and the entire Dr Who production for this year's Christmas special. BBC Bomb Apology Torchwood July 2, 2007 • Posted By Jarrod Cooper The BBC have issued an apology for sparking terror fears with an explosion in Cardiff city centre during filming for Torchwood. The explosion was staged next to the Millennium Stadium in an old courtroom building. Because of the latest terrorist attacks in Glasgow and London, the BBC issued warnings one hour before the blast on local radio and police had issued an alert two hours before the blast was due to go off. Passers-by were horrified by the explosion which sent a huge pall of smoke over the city centre. A BBC production member said: "The filming was planned many weeks ago before the recent terrorist incidents." "We had informed neighbouring businesses but could not tell everyone who might be in the city centre. We apologise if anyone was frightened." AI Figure, Sunday ratings Broadcasting July 2, 2007 • Posted By MarcusThe final episode of Season Three of Doctor Who was once more one of the most enjoyed programmes on British Television, with Episode Thirteen, Last of the Timelords achieving an Appreciation Index of 88.For a programme with such a high Audience to achieve such a high Appreciation index is incredibly rare. The programme scored extremely high on all aspects with 85% making a special effort to watch and 90% watching with a lot of attention. 78% thought it was a high quality programme. 31% thought the programme was inspiring, way above the average score for drama of 16% and 60% said they would recommend it to a friend. Meanwhile the Sunday BBC3 repeat was once more the most watched programme on Multichannel Television, with 0.76 million viewers, despite its earlier time slot. The share was 4.3% with Doctor Who Confidential being watched by 0.46 million viewers. Final figures are now available for the whole week and puts Doctor Who as the 7th most watched programme of the week, the highest position achieved since Gridlock. Saturday's Doctor Who got 1.7 million more viewers than Sunday's Coronation Street. Final figures will be released by BARB in about nine days time. BBC News: New Companion, Martha's Future General TV Series News July 2, 2007 • Posted By Jarrod Cooper The BBC has revealed that Martha Jones, as played by Freema Agyeman will join the cast of the Doctor Who spin off Torchwood for three episodes next year. She will then return to Doctor Who, rejoining the show in the middle of Season Four. To replace Martha a new companion will join the Doctor, staying for the entire thirteen week run of the series. An announcement on casting is promised very soon. Update 0800: news sites have started to pick up on the story: the Mirror, the Times, GMTV, and the Sun (who still insist she was 'axed'!). The ITV1 programme GMTV also reported on who might be cast as the companion (in the Spoiler section below). 0915: The BBC Press Office have now formally reported on Freema's future in the two series, and that the role of new companion is currently vacant and to be announced shortly. Richard Arnold on GMTV's Pick of the Day reported on the casting speculation that the Sun also touched upon, that actor Tom Ellis would play the next companion; Ellis had just appeared in Last of the Time Lords playing Thomas Milligan. Doctor Who dropped at London Pride 2007 Special Events July 1, 2007 • Posted By MarcusDr Who fans who endured very wet weather in London yesterday were disappointed when the organisers of London Pride 2007 had to pull the plug on the season finale, Last of the Time Lords, due to end the event on a large outdoor screen.
Hundreds of people gathered in Trafalgar Square to celebrate gay pride and were looking forward to seeing the show on the big screen when, at approximately 7.45pm, an apologetic host told the crowd that the programme had been cancelled. The fans who had sat in the rain for a number of hours with the promise that "Doctor Who would be airing shortly" were left severely disappointed. It was initially blamed on a faulty DVD player, but later transpired there was an 8pm curfew imposed on the event by Westminster Council and the police which meant there was no time for the broadcast. Scheduling delays also lead to confusion over timing and some Who fans missed appearances by John Barrowman and Freema Agyeman (a typo in a timetable flyer amusingly listed her as Freda Agyeman). Last of the Time Lords - Overnight Rating Broadcasting July 1, 2007 • Posted By MarcusDoctor Who went out on a massive high with unofficial overnight figures showing that Episode Thirteen, Last of the Time Lords was watched by 8.0 million viewers, a 39.1% share of the total television audience. The programme was by far the most watched of the day, beating the second placed Casualty by nearly 1.5 million viewers. The repeat of The Weakest Link: Dr Who Special was fifth with 4.5 million people watching. ITV1's opposition, the feature film The Mummy averaged just 3 million viewers. With just Sunday's ratings to come, Doctor Who is currently the 5th most watched programme of the week, virtually guaranteeing a top ten place when the final figures are compiled. It currently stands ahead of all episodes of Emmerdale, three episodes of EastEnders and one episode of Coronation Street. The children's audience was 1.5 million which was a 55.6% share of the 4-15 year olds watching television. On BBC3, Doctor Who Confidential was watched by 0.93 million making it the most watched programme on multichannel television with a 5.7% share of the audience. This is the highest rating of the series and the second highest rating the programme has received on the channel. Earlier in the day the showing of the compilation of the animated story Doctor Who - The Infinite Quest had 0.6 million viewers. Mickey To Return For Seson Four? When he was asked whether he had written any more scripts for Torchwood, he replied: "I'm not doing the second season of Torchwood, because I'm doing things that I can't talk about."
When asked how would Mickey's return would be explained, Noel Clarke said: "The only thing I could say is that it's sci-fi, right? And in sci-fi, there's no real rules, is there?" |
