Ford Motor Company came to Interbrand to create an internationally acceptable name for its first global car. The name had to be useable as a trade mark and linguistically appropriate around the world.
Interbrand created the name Mondeo, coined from the Latin mundus meaning world, which conveys a core meaning in many Latin-based languages. For Ford’s US division Interbrand created the name Mercury Mystique, which appeals to the primarily English-speaking audience.
Mondeo has exceeded expectations on awareness and in sales. It continues to be developed and promoted as a brand by Ford, and Interbrand continues to work with the automaker on other initiatives.
