goldman-and-shuster.PNGBig Head DC has learned from sources inside the MSNBC camp that Phil Griffin, senior vice president at the network, “screamed” at reporter David Shuster for not agreeing to immediately apologize to Chelsea Clinton for saying on-air she had been “pimped out” by her mom’s campaign. Griffin threatened to fire Shuster “on the spot,” and it was only with intervention from Tim Russert that Shuster didn’t lose his position.

Meanwhile, Chris Matthews, Hardball anchor and a longtime ally of Shuster, has told acquaintances that he “wishes he could do more” to aid Shuster, but Matthews is already in deep trouble with network bigwigs for making several sexist remarks about Sen. Hillary Clinton. Matthews would like to be vocally supporting Shuster in this situation, but he’s worried that he could lose his current role of anchoring political events on the network, if he does not appear to stay neutral.

Still, that concern hasn’t stopped Matthews from making unattributed quotes to some news outlets, according to our sources.

On another note in this unfolding drama, Big Head DC has learned that Julianna Goldman, wife of Shuster, is “distraught and angry” at MSNBC for the way the network has treated her husband. Goldman, a rising star at Bloomberg News, may be trying to secure a position for Shuster with her bosses at her network.

Shuster is a punk. He is the type of smarmy ***** you would like to kick in the face. We all know that MSNBC is an unoffical member of the Obama campaign. I dislike the Clinton’s, but I also dislike these type of cheap attacks that MSNBC takes on Obama’s behalf. They are not the Michael Savage show, they should be more respectful.

Chris Matthews and David Shuster are reckless and arrogant. They are able to spout all their misgivings without any worry of redress.
i remember just a few weeks ago David Shuster was defending Chris Matthews. I use to think that Matthews and Shuster were simple after hard news. Now it seems they have their own agenda. I have no problem with them having their own agenda, but if they want to spout their personal feelings and positions let them do like any other American. Buy the air time and risk being sued. Don’t hide behind the network. I noticed the way Chris Matthews smiles and carries water for Senator Mccain. He (Chris matthews) trashes Senator Clinton at every opportunity. Before Mayor Rudy Juliani fell he was pushing him as the candidate. Is he (Chris Matthews)reporting news or making news. I respect the more senior reporters such as Tom Brokaw, Tim Russert and Bryan. They treat people fair and balanced. David Shuster and Chris Matthews need to go work for Fox News, that is where their heart is and that is where they belong. I want news, I want news analysis, but I don’t want your opinion. We all have them

Don’t forget the controversy a couple months ago when another NBC reporter, Erin Burnett, called President Bush a monkey. She made an insincere apology a couple days later, then spoke about it on the Conan O’Brien show. And that was it. Just a slap on her wrists. What’s she been doing lately? How about calling the Apple company a shit stock and writing her gold-digger wish list in the February issue of Men’s Health. If Shuster gets fired, then so should Erin Burnett!

Hill needs to WOMAN-UP! I don’t remember her putting chel on the “strole” for other campaigns …why now? Oh yea desperate times call for desperate measures!

I like Shuster and I think his comments were dead-on. Chelsea HAS been used to campaign Superdelegates into voting for her Mom. “Pimped out” may not have been the best term to use but it was an accurate expression of the Clinton campaign’s use of their daughter.

But MSNBC/NBC needs to grow some balls. Anyone in politics, especially the Clintons has to have thick skin. This is not a child we’re talking about here, it’s a grown-woman (27 years old). The pandering and caving into Clinton’s campaign machine is unbelievable. We all know that it was the media’s failure to ask the hard questions that helped lead us into the war in Iraq. Is this what we have to look forward to in a Clinton administration-the silencing of any media that asks legit questions and (rightly) criticizes them? Oh yay–just what we need 4-8 more years of muzzling of the press in this country.

And hell, if we want to start suspending people, let’s throw out Scarborough while we’re at it (Fred Thompson’s wife works the pole?), Matthews (any number of comments) and Keith Olbermann too (google Keith’s name and mysogny and see what comes up–hell, key in his name and search on racism and see what comes up). There’s a “swinging dicks” mentality at MSNBC that has long needed addressing but not by a political candidate whose toes they are afraid of stepping on because they don’t want to lose the chance to host a debate.

Here is the funny thing….Clintons own Press Sec did not even know what the term “Pimped Out” meant!

Riddle me this…How can you be upset about a term that you don’t understand???

If the Press Sec googled the term the 1st hit reads…….

From-Urban Dictionary: “pimped outpimped out cool pimp awesome tricked out nice phat pimpin ride … By the amount of bling-bling he was flashing, we knew he was pimped out. …”

“cool” “awesome” does not sound bad to me….

Now we all know there are other connotations but why take the low road? Maybe Hill wanted to play the sympathy vote??

David - how hard is it for someone, anyone, in the vast MS/NBC universe to contact any one of us at the campaign for comment about Chelsea before going on air and saying that she is being “pimped out” ? It’s absurdly offensive. And what the hell does that even mean?
I just don’t get MSNBC - does GE not allow you to make toll calls? What’s the problem.

The comment reminds me of what we call a hostile work environment. If Mathews had not made it so common for sexist remarks, Shuster may not have joined in, but he’s a grown man and he chose to do so. I’m tired of slang in journalism, especially misogynist slang. The pimped out comment got traction but the REAL story is that David Shuster, even leaving the word out, considered it unseemly that a grown daughter of a Presidential candidate should be involved in persuading people to vote for her mother. It’s just sheer bias. Josh Marshall over at TPM thinks the Clintons called for his firing when they said a suspension was not enough. It seems clear to me they said that MS/NBC leaders needed to look at the continued pattern of sexist comments or just biased reporting that has made the main stream media a hostile environment for Hillary Clinton’s campaign

Olbermann’s allowed to say that Bush is “pimping out Petraeus” without so much as a batted eyelash amongst the media. Why is it that targets on the left are are protected species while targets on the right are free-fire zones?

  1. […] While Shuster’s comment drew the venom, according to some reports, of SVP Phil Griffin, who wanted him fired, Olbermann’s suggestion that President Bush was “pimping” General David Petraeus got a free pass. But Mr. Bush, you have hidden behind the General’s skirts, and today you have hidden behind the skirts of ‘the planted last question’ at a news conference, to indicate once again that your presidency has been about the tilted playing field, about no rules for your party in terms of character assassination and changing the fabric of our nation, and no **right** for your opponents or critics to as much as **respond**.
