Welcome to this special edition of This Week In Doctor Who. This Week In Doctor Who and Torchwood This Week will not be published on the 16th of February, as I will be at the Gallifrey One convention in Los Angeles, CA http://www.gallifreyone.com/gallifrey.php that weekend. Hopefully the hybrid versions of the columns coming out today will help tide everybody over till regular service resumes on the 23rd. And if you are going to Gallifrey, see you there.

Germany - ProSieben (Pro7) http://www.prosieben.de is cancelling Doctor Who after tonight's (9 February) episodes - 3 weeks (6 episodes) into the run. The ratings were lower than ProSieben had anticipated. Our sympathies to the German Doctor Who audience, who have been waiting for years for ProSieben to begin the Series 1 and 2 package they purchased (I think they bought back in 2005 - I'd have to check my archives). German language DVDs will come out this year as previously planned. ProSieben could still air the episodes in another time slot down the road.

South Africa - SABC2 http://www.sabc2.co.za/portal/site/sabc2 is slipping The Sarah Jane Adventures on the air starting today (9 February). The half hour episodes air at 3:30PM CAT Saturdays. I do not know if Invasion Of The Bane aired. This is the first time I have heard of any Doctor Who show airing on South African TV (though BBC Prime is available in South Africa and is rerunning Series 1 now).

Hong Kong - ATV World http://www.hkatv.com/world/05 is finally starting Series 3 of Doctor Who - Thursdays at 10PM from 14 February, taking Torchwood's time slot. At 10PM each week will be an installment of The Infinite Quest, the serialized animated Doctor Who story from 2007. This is The Infinite Quest's first airing outside the UK. The regular episodes air at 10:03PM. The website makes it unclear if they will start with The Runaway Bride or Smith And Jones.

USA - SciFi US http://www.scifi.com confirmed this week that they are buying both Series 4 of Doctor Who and Series 1 of The Sarah Jane Adventures. Both shows will start in April. In the case of Doctor Who it means that US viewers will be just weeks behind the UK (exact dates unknown in both countries). It is not clear yet how The Sarah Jane Adventures (one 60 minute episode, ten 25 to 28 minute episodes) will be presented on SciFi.

UK - UKTV Drama is dropping the weekday (12:20PM and 5PM) airings of the Tom Baker episodes. Last one is 15 February (The Brain Of Morbius pt 3). The episodes continue on Saturday night and Sunday morning uninterrupted. UKTV Gold is adding a weekday run of new Who (5PM and 6PM starting 18 February).

Iowa Public TV's http://www.iptv.org March schedule is online. On Saturday 15 March at 11PM they have "Doctor Who: Christmas Invasion, with guest host TJ Lubinsky" listed. It is a 90 minute time slot and falls during IPTV's March pledge drive. No further information is available, but clearly The Christmas Invasion is being used as a pledge special (ala Sherlock Holmes - A Study In Scarlett on many PBS stations in 2007). The Christmas Invasion is not part of the 13 episode Series 2 package sold to stations - it has been offered separately. This is the first station to have scheduled the episode. Series 2 in general becomes available in April 2008.

The presence of TJ Lubinsky indicates that the 90 minute Christmas Invasion presentation is a nationally produced special that could air on many of the Doctor Who stations, if they want it. TJ Lubinksy is responsible for the many popular Doo Wop specials that have run on PBS since 1998 and other related music pledge events. TJ also rescued the Howard DaSilva introductions used on 4 Tom Baker DVD releases, spearheaded the 2000 National Doctor Who pledge special (with Sylvester McCoy as the guest), championed Doctor Who at PBS stations he worked at in Florida and Pennsylvania, and was involved in other Doctor Who ventures. A specially hosted edition may be intended to encourage pledge support and get more stations to renew Who.

WTVP 47 Peoria, IL http://www.wtvp.org has updated their web site as of February 6. They are still working on raising the money needed to stay on the air after February. Full details on the website. The situation sounds more hopeful, though they are not safe yet. They are saving money by not printing February TV listings - their February details are available in .pdf form on the website, including a 3rd cycle of new Who Series 1 Saturdays at 9PM. If you are in WTVP's viewing area or just wanted to thank them for being one of the stations airing Doctor Who, send them an e-mail or call. They would not mind a pledge too.

If Series 3 of Doctor Who becomes available to public TV stations, it will be after the episodes have aired on BBC America. BBC America airs Series 3 from January 26 to April 19 2008.

4 Public TV stations currently have rights to air the classic Doctor Who run (1963-1989). Iowa Public TV is currently airing both Series 1 and Peter Davison episodes. Maryland Public TV is airing Series 1 while resting classic Who. KBTC 28 Tacoma, WA and WCET 48 Cincinnati, OH are airing Tom Baker episodes while resting Series 1.

One station has, to the best of our knowledge, used all their rights to the Series 1 package already - WLVT 39 Allentown, PA. If they air Series 1 again, then that means they re-bought the package or I misunderstood the meaning of cycling through the episodes 4 times. WILL 12 Urbana, IL, Iowa Public TV, OETA Oklahoma, and Idaho Public TV are currently on their 4th and presumably final cycle of Series 1. WMFE 24 Orlando, FL did not renew Doctor Who for a second series and is not expected to return it to their schedule.
