Ericka Schiche: Hyman, Dick Orchestra - Give It Up Or Turn It Loose
It's worth noting this Dick Hyman Orchestra record is an instrumental cover of James Brown's "Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose". Hyman, who turns 81 in March of this year, is known primarily for his jazz work and also his seminal synthesizer recordings, particularly "Moon Gas" and "Moog: The Electric Eclectics of Dick Hyman," both of which feature his more spaced out take on psychedelia. Although it would be easy to situate his synthesizer work on the same stylistically esoteric plane as the work of Ken Nordine, Mort Garson, Perrey and Kingsley, and Walter/Wendy Carlos, Hyman has in fact gone back to his jazz roots. DJ Food sampled Hyman's record on his "Part 2 Doing It To Death" mix, which is a James Brown inspired recording.

Ericka Schiche: Gaturs - Cold Bear
The Swinging 7 Soul Band made a harder, faster version of this record with "Soul Pusher". The main difference between the two records is the intro - on "Soul Pusher" the wah wah guitar effects are heard from the first few notes, whereas the more classic "Cold Bear" has a completely different intro. The Gaturs were led by keyboardist Wilson Turbinton aka Willie Tee, who passed away Sept 2007. Willie Tee had been recording for the Nola label, but when that label folded he decided to create the Gatur label in 1968. "Cold Bear" is featured on the Tuff City Funky Delicacies-issued "Wasted" LP, which is the first official release of the Gaturs 45s in LP format.

Ericka Schiche: Garno, Lou Trio - Chicken In The Basket
The boutique one-off Giovanni label the Lou Garno Trio recorded for is predicated on the name of owner Giovanni Furcini. There are still many Furcinis living in Phoenix and Prescott, Arizona, among other towns. Tenor saxophonist Lou Garno still plays in various night spots, lately in Scottsdale, Arizona. Like the OIC one-off, which was also used for promotional purposes, this record is a perfect illustration of how ephemeral the funk movement in Phoenix, Arizona could be. Apparently the band did not go further beyond this recording. Only about 500 copies were originally pressed.

Ericka Schiche: Gardiner, Boris Happening - Ghetto Funk
The first pressing of this record features the aforementioned flip side. A subsequent pressing on Leal featured a different flip side titled "Spooky". Leslie Butler is the Hammond B3 organist featured on "Ghetto Funk". The rhythm section consisted of Billy Johnson (guitar), Larry McDonald (congas), Alvin Haughton (percussion) and Boris Gardiner (bass).
