About Us
We, Khandelwal Glass Works, are one of the oldest companies in the glass industry in India. Established in 1932 at Sasni, we started the manufacturing of Codd Bottles since 1981 and started capturing the market thenceforth. We are the only manufacturer of Codd Bottles in India, which are marketed under the brand name of VICTORY and DECO.

About the Codd Bottle
Hiram Codd of Camberwell, a British soft swig maker based in south east London, designed, developed and patented the Codd Bottle for carbonated drinks in the year 1872. Also termed as the Codd-neck bottle, it encloses a marble and a rubber washer/gasket in the neck. The bottle is filled upside down, and pressure of the gas in the bottle forces the marble against the washer, sealing in the carbonation. Pinched into a special shape, it has a chamber that prevents the marble from blocking the neck as the drink is poured. The Codd Bottle is popular in Europe, Asia and Australasia.

The Codd Bottle is widely used to bottle carbonated drinks like Soda Water/Aerated Water. The Codd Bottle is also known as kancha bottle, goli bottle, and soda bottle in different parts of the country.

What Is Soda Water/Aerated Water?
Soda Water/Aerated Water is plain water into which carbon dioxide gas has been dissolved. It is the major and defining component used in most soft drinks. Soda water is generally of two kinds, viz. Plain Soda Water (Aerated Soda Water) and Flavored Soda Water (Aerated Beverages). In Plain Soda Water, Carbonic Acid Gas (Co2) & Sodium-by-carbonate solution under pressure is mixed with pure water. Flavored Soda Water contains flavors of lemon, ginger (Masala Soda), milk rose, mango, pineapple, etc. in syrup base and this preparation is also made using carbonic acid gas (Co2) under pressure.

The Soda Water/Aerated Water Business
The soda water/aerated water business falls under the category of the Cottage Industry, which requires small investment but brings huge profits. In the Indian climatic conditions, long, humid and hot summer season produce immense requirement of soda, lemon, lemonade and juices. So the Cold Drinks/Soda Drink business provides a wide opportunity to grow and flourish if one is equipped with developed machinery and production methods. This industry needs less efforts and manpower and can be made highly profitable with expert supervision and suggestions from time to time.

The Complete Process
One can start the business of soda water in a 10' x 12' room with a filling machine, washing machine and other apparatus including bottles. Given below are the requirements and considerations:
  • Filling Machine: Half Cylinder (Handi) Machine and one Chapa for bottle filling
  • Washing Machine: A small motor can be fitted with a long sprue brush to be used as swashing machine or with brush by handle
  • Cylinder: Two Co2 cylinders of 9 kg each are required so that while one is in use the other is kept in spares
  • Codd Bottles: Empty codds bottles can be obtained from any dealer/distributor/retailer of bakery, essence or other essence in your region. A bag containing 75 bottles is easily available in these outlets
  • Essence: Essence can be purchased from any essence dealer or retailer easily
  • Pans (Bhagonas): Two pans with a capacity of holding 40 to 45 litres of water are required
  • Tubes (Tania): Two tubes of 250 ltrs capacity will be required to wash bottles
  • LPG & LPG Burner: These are needed to heat water
  • Crates: Wooden or plastic crates are required to transport bottles, preferably 225 ML or 280 ML bottles crates. In case there is a scarcity of the same, the nearest dealer or factory can be contacted
  • Investment: Around Rs. 50000/- is enough to start the business
  • Labour: Two workers, one for washing bottles and filling syrup and other for filling the bottle with machine, will be required
  • Supply: One rickshaw puller can be kept on a contract basis, who can carry the supply of filled bottles to soft drink retailers, general stores, bakeries and pan shops and bring back empty bottles
  • Market: Initially, the nearby shopkeepers can be contacted and with the growth of market, the distribution areas can be spread, which will depend on the maintenance of purity and taste.
Method for Preparation of Lemon Flavored Soda Water for 30 Crates
Following is a brief on ingredients as well as the complete preparation process of lemon flavored soda water:
  • Ingredients: Mix all the four lemon essences, viz. Lemon No. 1--60 ML, Lemon No. 662--30 ML, Lemon Green--25 ML and Oil of Lemon--10 ML to get 125ML of essence. Avoid using local essences. The other ingredients required are sugar 18 kg, water 27 ltrs., citric acid 300 gms., Cloudy one spoonful, either of preservatives 150 ml or sodium benzite 1gm (in 1 ltr. water), Dr. Improval 10 ml for belches (Batra Co.), and CO2 Gas 75 to 80 Lbs.
  • Essence Process: Mix 28 ltrs of water with sugar and heat it. Add citric acid in it and cool it (don't touch it by hand) and then filter it through a clothed sieve. Add essences and if desired add cloudy. To preserve water contents, add sodium benzite or preservative and to give belching experience add Dr. Improval. Now fill the 36 ltrs solution in bottles, each amounting to 50 ml, which will be mixed with water in the next step by machines
  • Washing of Soda Water Bottles: Properly washed bottles should be used for filling up the soda water. To wash the bottles, add. T. Poll 100 ml in 250 ml of water. Use of warm water easily washes deposited sweet solution of previous filling. To ensure that the bottles are free from any micro organisms, they should be washed by brush machine using potassium permanganate or similar disinfecting chemical
  • Filling Process: Bottles should be filled almost up to the eye level and utmost care should be taken that gas pressure does not exceed the safe limits. For soda water, the gas pressure is kept at 75-80 ponds/sqr. inch. Fit the gas cylinder to the filling machine through the regulator pipe. Now fill water and gas in the bottles. As the bottles are filled, the marble ball seals the bottle by itself as a result of gas pressure from inside. 30 crates can be easily filled in an hour.
  • Labeling of Bottles: Use attractive labels to give an attractive look to the bottles
  • Preservatives: To preserve flavor and quality for long time, use preservatives like sulphur-di-oxide and sodium benzite, which are easily available in the market. Add 150 ml preservative in 30 crates or one gram of sodium benzite in one litre of water. For belching, add 10 ml Dr. Improval in 30 crates
  • Precautions: The filling machine should be kept clean and washed. External air leakage should be avoided. While preparing aerated water and filling gas in bottles, this air, if enters the bottles, creates bad effect on fragrance and taste.
  • Precaution to Avoid Fermentation: At times, downfall in demand, may lead to long storage further leading to fermentation, i.e., development of sore taste and bad smell. Some of the reasons for fermentation are keeping the syrup in wooden pots, using aged or previously prepared syrup, mixing aged and fresh syrup, using low grade colors and acids, defect in filling machine or accumulation of dirt in the pipe lines, and improper washing of soda bottles. To avoid fermentation the soda water factory should be kept clean. The bottles should be washed first by warm water and then by potassium permanganate solution and finally with fresh water. Syrup should be prepared according to the requirement of the day; and aged and fresh syrup should not be mixed.
