Low Ki's debut as a RISE member today ended in misery as he suffered a knee injury. He has been ruled off tomorrow's show, but New Japan hasn't said if he will miss anymore dates. After tomorrow's show in Ota, there will be a break until the 8th, so they may wait and see how his knee holds up in that time.

El Samurai leaves New Japan by Stuart - 01 Feb 2008
New Japan has agreed to let El Samurai leave the company after his contract expired. Recently hit by injuries, Samurai has not been seen much in the ring and as one of New Japan's longest serving mainstays, his departure comes as some surprise. As always, there is a possibility that Samurai could keep working in New Japan but as a freelancer, however it seems more likely that he'll explore some new options.

Three matches added to 2/17; Tenzan returns! by Stuart - 01 Feb 2008

GBH boss Hiroyoshi Tenzan finally returns to action on February 17th at Sumo Hall, leading a squadron against Legend. It will be interesting to see how Makabe, who took leadership of GBH in Tenzan's absence, responds to his senior's return. In a special singles match, Wataru Inoue battles RISE newcomer, Low Ki. Wataru's title is not on the line here, after his recent defense load, but should Low Ki win, a rematch for the belt might be on the cards. The only other match added today, completing the card (match order hasn't been announced yet) is a veteran vs. young generation eight man tag, and all in all, this looks to be a fantastic offering from New Japan.

Nakanishi and Wataru sign contracts by Stuart - 31 Jan 2008
Two more men signed contract renewals today, those being Manabu Nakanishi and IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Champion, Wataru Inoue. The status of Hiroyoshi Tenzan, which I mentioned briefly the other day, may have been cleared up slightly. Chono sent a love call out to his on-again/off-again disciple, spurring speculation of a possible ChoTen reunion - though probably unlikely with the Legend faction becoming so popular. Anyway, Chono suggested Tenzan could return to action on the February Sumo Hall show.

Match added to LOCK UP 2/24 by Stuart - 31 Jan 2008
The 2/24 LOCK UP show is looking to be one of the bigger ones run by the brand of late. A third match was added today with the New Japan vs. ZERO1-MAX feud, the entertaining interpromotional battle stretching into Choshu's LOCK UP. 2007 tag team of the year, Makabe & Yano, will face the emerging Yoshihito Sasaki and his partner, Tengu Kaiser. That means of the three matches announced we have NJ/GBH vs. Apache, NJ/Legend vs. DRADITION, and NJ/GBH vs. ZERO1-MAX.

IWGP Jr. Tag match added to 2/17!, more contracts signed by Stuart - 28 Jan 2008
Minoru & Prince Devitt's V1 defense of the IWGP Jr. Tag Team Title that they took from Togo & TAKA just yesterday is now official! It will be RISE vs. Legend when the two battle New Japan junior legends, Jushin Thunder Liger & AKIRA, in the fifth announced match on a card that one could argue is almost as strong as the 1/4 Tokyo Dome lineup. Another change has been made also, and that is the time limit in Nakamura vs. Angle being abolished, in an attempt to force a winner and hence the unification of the belts. New Japan also announced today that Nakanishi & Hirasawa will work the ZERO1-MAX show at Korakuen Hall on the same day, which takes place at a different time. Their opponents are as yet unnamed.

    5. IWGP Heavyweight Title Unification Match - IWGP 2nd vs. IWGP 3rd: Shinsuke Nakamura (c) vs. Kurt Angle TNA Wrestling (c)

Four wrestlers and one referee signed contracts today, the most notable being Hiroshi Tanahashi, who put pen to paper after second shot negotiations. Super Strong Machine, Tiger Mask, and Prince Devitt were the other wrestlers, while Red Shoes Unno was the referee. Speculation has been rampant since December about Hiroyoshi Tenzan's future in New Japan, and he still has yet to have formal contract talks that I know of.

    --> "CIRCUIT 2008 NEW JAPAN ISM" <--
A packed Korakuen Hall saw both of New Japan's junior titles defended this evening. Wataru Inoue made a successful V2 defense of his IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Title in the main event, pinning the man he took the title from in December, Ryusuke Taguchi. Wataru's new Oracion Flame finisher (modified Staggerin' Blow) made the difference, but the champion still isn't pleased with his performances and wants to up the tempo from his next match. The all-star team of Dick Togo & TAKA Michinoku was finally conquered after an eight month reign as IWGP Jr. Tag Team Champions. RISE captured it's third IWGP title of four possible, Minoru & Devitt defeating the former Kaientai Deluxe members in a hot 20+ minute match. Devitt continued his remarkable progress by pinning Togo in a jackknife hold following the Prince's Throne, the RISE duo becoming the 19th generation champions. An already impressive 2/17 Sumo Hall card looks set to receive another injection of quality with Minoru & Devitt nominating Jushin Thunder Liger & AKIRA as their first challengers on that show. All that remains is confirmation from New Japan that it will happen.

Sekigun's Yuji Nagata & Hiroshi Tanahashi bested RISE's Shinsuke Nakamura & Hirooki Goto in the biggest match underneath, Nagata pinning the man he meets on 2/17, Goto, with a backdrop hold. Big match losses to Tanahashi, Makabe, Muta, and this tag to Nagata have slowed Goto's momentum, so he will be targetting victory over Mr. Saikyo on 2/17 when they have their first ever singles match. ZERO1-MAX ace, Masato Tanaka, and ZERO1-MAX junior star, Ikuto Hidaka, overcame the New Japan junior tandem of Koji Kanemoto & Tetsuya Naito in another heated match, Tanaka pinning Naito after landing his Sliding D. There were sparks between Tanaka and Kanemoto throughout the match, and this issue may only be settled by a singles match. And after beating the all-star team of Chono & Liger in Okinawa, Makabe & Yano took another big tag scalp today by beating Choshu & Koshinaka, Yano pinning Koshinaka. The two will looking to keep it up ahead of their IWGP Tag Team Title shot against Bernard & Tomko on 2/17.

DRADITION enters LOCK UP on 2/24! by Stuart - 25 Jan 2008
Riki Choshu held a press conference early today to announce that members of Tatsumi Fujinami's DRADITION will enter Choshu's LOCK UP on February 24th at Korakuen Hall. It marks the beginning of what could become an in-ring rivalry between Choshu and Fujinami's "brands", and will be a six man tag match pitting Legend's Choshu, Koshinaka & AKIRA against DRADITION's Yutaka Yoshie, Isao Takagi (formerly Arashi) & Hisamaru Tajima. DRADITION wrestlers will also appear on LOCK UP's 2/29 show in Osaka, but who and in what match has yet to be decided. Choshu is talking about bringing Fujinami himself in, which could lead to some battles between the two greats. Choshu is also positive to competing in DRADITION's ring himself.

Three more contracts renewed by Stuart - 24 Jan 2008

NJ in TNA day two, NJ triumph in Z1MAX, more contracts signed by Stuart - 23 Jan 2008

Day two of New Japan's involvement in TNA was very eventful. The signing ceremony for the IWGP Heavyweight Title Unification Match was held in Florida, Shinsuke Nakamura and Kurt Angle making what may end up as the biggest match of 2008 in Japanese pro wrestling official. TNA boss Dixie Carter oversaw the signing, saying what an honour she felt it was to be able to host the signing ceremony for a New Japan title match. She is sure Angle will win the match in Tokyo and prove himself the best champion in the world. Angle said he has already proven himself the strongest by defeating Brock Lesnar, and has a strategy to end his match with Nakamura quickly. He thinks the longer it goes, the more it may favour Nakamura, who is known for his good stamina. Since Nakamura is a different style of wrestler to Nagata, Angle expects their match to be much different. On the contrary, Nakamura believes a short match would favour him too, so is also looking for the quick kill. He said his mission as a Japanese pro wrestler is to unite the two IWGP belts and become the one and only champion.

Tiger Mask and AJ Styles had their second singles match, after Tiger scored a big win over the TNA star while on tour of America last year, in an NWA promotion. Styles in TNA is a much different beast though and overcame Tiger in what was a predictably close contest. Tiger said after the match that he wants Tanahashi to crush AJ on 2/17, then wants to team with Tana against Tomko & AJ for the TNA Tag Team Title. On the same taping, Nakamura made his TNA debut, beating Elix Skipper quite easily. Nakamura seemed puzzled why they threw someone like Skipper at him, and seemed disappointed by the lack of competition.

    - Shinsuke Nakamura New Japan beat Elix Skipper (4:40) with the Landslide.

New Japan triumphed in the latest match of the resparked NJ vs. ZERO1-MAX war today. Nakanishi led juniors Kanemoto and Taguchi to victory over the 01 trio of Omori, Sato & Namiguchi, Kanemoto pinning Namiguchi. After the match, Kanemoto took the microphone and insulted Z1 and its wrestlers, calling out ace Masato Tanaka. Tanaka appeared and argued with the group, before Nakanishi asked for more combat on New Japan's 2/17 show, suggesting the war continue in a less disgraceful ring. He also proposed himself vs. members of Z1's roster in a Handicap Match to make things fair.

Four wrestlers and one referee signed new deals today on was a busy day at New Japan offices. Despite the usual unfounded rumours, Nagata was the most notable one to sign, while Makabe also inked a new deal. Yujiro and Tetsuya Naito were the other wrestlers, along with referee Marty Asami.

NJ wrestlers star in TNA by Stuart - 22 Jan 2008

Shinsuke Nakamura and Tiger Mask began their TNA invasion at the 1/21 IMPACT! tapings, Tiger Mask teaming with the revived Curry Man in victory and IWGP Heavyweight Champion, Shinsuke Nakamura, being presented to the American fans. After Tiger's match, loud "Please come back!" chants rung out. Tiger suggested that he and Curry Man could reunite their team again in New Japan, refusing to rule anything out. Jeff Jarrett grudgingly admitted that Tiger Mask is strong and a first class wrestler, and said he planned to throw tough competition at him the following day. Nakamura made his appearance later on and when he advertised himself as the REAL IWGP Heavyweight Champion, there was some booing. TNA and Angle plan to intercept Nakamura with a tough opponent tomorrow.

Tanahashi resists Muto, Low Ki joins RISE, Nagata vs. Goto on 2/17 by Stuart - 17 Jan 2008

While appearing specially on Keiji Muto's Samurai! TV talk show, Tanahashi heard "Satan's whisper" from his idol, who suggested Tanahashi move to All Japan or even head to WWE. Muto said he would even prepare an All Japan contract today, but Tanahashi refused and said he is sticking to New Japan's signboard. Tanahashi told the press that he plans to defeat AJ Styles, then challenge and win the TNA Heavyweight Title from Kurt Angle.

RISE announced the acquisition of its newest member - Low Ki! Low Ki, who resigned from TNA shortly after representing them on New Japan's 11/11 Sumo Hall show as Senshi, has been brought in by the injured Milano. He starts up on the next tour, for which more cards have been announced (see below).

Hirooki Goto will go to war with Yuji Nagata in the latest feature match added to the very impressive 2/17 Sumo Hall card. Goto said he plans to open Nagata's eyes after Nagata said he had been burnt out by his titanic war with Kurt Angle. New Japan also announced that Nakamura will head to TNA shortly to confront Kurt Angle and build up their unification match. Goto also showed interest in going to TNA and launching a RISE invasion, similar to CTU's from a couple of years ago. Nakamura will wrestle on the 1/21 and 1/22 tapings in Florida.

Tanahashi vs. AJ Styles on 2/17! by Stuart - 16 Jan 2008
After an interval of about two years, Hiroshi Tanahashi and TNA superstar AJ Styles go to war again on 2/17 at Sumo Hall, their second singles match. In 2006, Tanahashi headed to TNA and was beaten by Styles, and although both men have stepped up in their respective promotions since, Tanahashi will be looking for a revenge win here. However, AJ told New Japan's official website that he considers this match a foothold for a full New Japan invasion, and is looking past Tanahashi to matches with Nagata, Nakanishi, Goto, and other heavyweights!

New Japan also announced that Tiger Mask will head to TNA for an excursion very soon. Tiger Mask is furious at the American promotion though, as they have only told him he'll be fighting on January 21st, but believes they are trying to shorthand him by refusing to name an opponent until the day, giving him no chance to prepare. TNA hopes to bring various other New Japan wrestlers in this year, with Tiger Mask and Nakamura top of their want list according to a recent edition of the Wrestling Observer.
