Staff Openings: Critics Wanted
Editorial Staff
Anime News Network is seeking new critics to add to our ever-increasing Reviews team. Here's what we're looking for:
This position is paid on a per-article basis.
Send two sample reviews of at least 400 words each to zac [at] animenewsnetwork.com. Blog or journal links must point directly to a specific article. Unfortunately it will not be possible for Anime News Network to respond to every submission, therefore we will only respond to candidates that we are considering.
Thank you,

Gyo GN 2
With all that pesky introductory nonsense out of the way, Junji Ito gets down to what he does best: undiluted grossness.

Blood+ Part 1 DVD
Rife with sword-flashing violence but not action-clogged, its heart worn on sleeve but not too sappy, Blood+ is a simple, solid action-adventure: entertaining, involving, and sometimes powerful.

King of the Lamp GN
Respectable artistry and two strong chapters are enough to merit a look by older fans of shojo anime who are not bothered by the inclusion of sexual situations or heroines who get treated roughly at times.

The Third: The Girl with the Blue Eye DVD 4
Despite a one-episode drop-off in artistic quality, the series regains its stride with this intimate, self-contained four-episode story arc. It may not be a shining example of originality but executes well.

One Piece: Movie No. 8 DVD
A glorified recap episode, this film is more a reminder of times past than a work of art, but given the length of time we may have to wait before an un-butchered version of those times is available, it's better than nothing.

My Heavenly Hockey Club GN 3
Like the rest of the series so far, this installment of My Heavenly Hockey Club is good fun, but not terribly deep.

Muhyo & Roji's Bureau of Supernatural Investigation GN 2
The cartoonish style isn't as ghostly and supernatural as it could be, and the story—despite its growing ambitions—is still too sloppy to compare to the best in the genre. It's getting better, but not that much better.

Innocent Venus DVD 3
The renewed focus on the central trio of characters and their drastically altered relationship goes a long way towards providing a surprisingly meaty end to a deeply flawed series.

King of Thorn GN 1-3
A decided shortage of originality does not detract from how involving this constantly tense, action-packed story of cryogenically frozen survivors waking up in a hostile environment can be.

Shuten Doji DVD 1-2
It won't satisfy anyone seeking historical perspective or further insight into the legends surrounding the historical Shuten Doji, but if a dark, bloody, and fan service-laden piece of escapism is all you seek then this title might fit the bill.
