Snow in Japan disrupts travel and sports events

A snowstorm over much of central Japan on Sunday delayed trains and airlines and forced the cancellation of outdoor sporting events in Tokyo.

The meteorological agency reported 3 centimeters, or 1.2 inches, of snow in the center of the capital and 6 centimeters in Yokohama, south of Tokyo. Forecasters said about 5 more centimeters could pile up in Tokyo later Sunday.

Haneda Airport in Tokyo closed one of three runways and canceled 147 flights, the public television station NHK reported. Train services were delayed in the capital, while the high-speed Shinkansen service between Tokyo and Osaka was halted, NHK said. The Ome Marathon in Tokyo and horse races in Fuchu were canceled, the Asahi Newspaper reported.
