International Experience

July 6 - August 13, 1987. Member of a Fulbright-Hays-sponsored delegation to the People's Republic of China. Lectured in Shenyang, visited universities, colleges, and other schools in Shenyang, Dalian, Beijing, Anshan, Lanzhou, Fushun, Xining, Benxi, Xian, Guangzhou and Guilin.

May 9 - June 7, 1988. Led a delegation of coal chemists/environmental scientists to the Republic of China (Taiwan) and to Mainland China to participate in a series of coal/chemistry, analytical chemistry, environmental conferences at Chung Yuan Christian University, Taipei; East China University of Chemical Technology, Shanghai; the Central Coal Research Laboratories, Beijing; and the Fujian Institute of Testing Technology, Fuzhou (see Abstracts/ Presentations/Exhibits).

April 16-22, 1989. Hosted a 10-member delegation from China at WKU. The delegation was headed by Bao Enrong, Director, Education Division, China National Coal Corp., Beijing and Mr. K. Feng (Deputy Director). Other members: Boyang Zhao, President, North China Mining Medical College; Zhenghai Feng, President, Huainan Mining Institute; Yantan Wang, President, Huaibei Teachers College; Yuguang Guo, Vice President, China University of Mining and Technology; Bianzhi Chen, Vice Director, Foreign Language Training Center; Zhankui Long, Vice President, Ahnshan Institute of Iron and Steel Technology; Dehui Yang, Director, Fujian Institute of Testing Technology; and Dongdi Wu, Vice President, East China University of Chemical Technology.

June 24-29, 1990. Participated in an International Conference on Nuclear Methods of Analysis on Crete, Greece. Chaired the session on Nuclear Applications in the Life Sciences.

October 25-November 4, 1990. Participated in an International Conference on Environmental Education at Kazan University in the Soviet Union.

October 17-30, 1991. Meeting with officials of the China National Coal Corporation and LECO Corporation in Beijing to discuss LECO support of WKU/China exchange program. Also visited Tangshan Mining Medical College, Huinan Mining Institute and China University of Mining and Technology, Xuzhou for exchange program discussions.

April 26-28, 1993. Hosted eight-member delegation from the People's Republic of China at Western Kentucky University: Wu Hanzhang, Vice President, China University of Mining and Technology; Li Xianguo, President, Huainan Mining Institute; Cui Xuezeng , Vice President, North China Coal Medical College; Song Fuzhen, Vice President, Huaibei Teachers College of
Coal Industry; Gu Zhengqiu, Vice President, Beijing University of Science and Technology; Yu Yisheng, Vice President, Anshan Institute of Iron and Steel; and Zhou Dongzhou, International Program Coordinator, Department of Education, China National Coal Corporation.

May 28-June 5, 1995. Member of a Southeast Missouri State University delegation to Mexico's Yucatan peninsula. Visited the Autonomous University of the Yucatan in Merida - School of Business (Director, Dr. Alejandro Yáñez-Arancibia) and the University of Campeche (Rector, Dr. Juan José Casanova Isaac) to discuss possible exchange (cooperative programs in Nursing, Foreign Languages, Social Work, and Environmental Science).

July 6-9, 1998. Participated in an International Conference on Improving University Learning and Teaching in Dublin, Ireland. Presented a paper, Strategic Approaches to Advancing Learner-Centeredness at the State-System and University Levels in Missouri.

July 10-12, 1998. London, England. Visited Imperial College, site of Southeast's "Missouri London Program" (a study-abroad program for students from Missouri Universities).

June 1-7, 2000. Shanghai, China. Visited University of Shanghai for Science & Technology (USST) and signed agreement to formalize exchange program between the UND College of Business & Public Administration and USST.

October 22-31, 2002. Russia. Member of a delegation of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) presidents to visit counterparts in St. Petersburg, Novgorod, and Moscow with the intention of expanding academic exchange programs and Russian studies in U.S. colleges and universities.

January 29-31, 2003. Presented "Issues in Research and Development for American Universities," for a seminar at Harvard University sponsored by the American Councils for International Education attended by 20 Russian university rectors plus officials of the Russian Ministry of Education and the Russian Duma.

June 13-18, 2004.  Visited the American College of Norway in Moss (Krista Lauritzen, Director) and UND students enrolled in the University of Oslo School of Law.  Discussions with Rektor Arild Underdahl concerning the establishment of additional exchange programs.

September 11-15, 2005. Participated in The Oxford Conclave on Global Ethics and the Changing University Presidency at Balliol College, University of Oxford, sponsored by the Siegel Institute for Leadership, Ethics and Character at Kennesaw State University.

September 2005. Visited Lithuania. Met with the Vice Rector for International Programs, Kestutis Pukelis, to discuss possible student and faculty exchanges, and toured Vytautas Magnus University.

September 10-14, 2006. Participated in second Oxford Conclave on Ethical Leadership.

October 27, 2006. Participated in the International Forum of University Presidents hosted by the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology in Shanghai, PRC.

September 12-18, 2007. Visited Osh State University in the Kyrgyz Republic and met with Rector Mukhtar Orozbekov to establish cooperative exchange agreement.
