Yellow discoloration How-to get rid off it?
Posted: Jun 15, 2006 5:45 AM

Hello,

since the original thread was closed down without any answer on the subject, here goes: How to get rid of the yellow/grey/orange discoloration a lot of MacBooks are showing? This is a technical issue, so I think there should be no problems with this thread now should there.

OK, another thing: Since the last thread WAS shut down, it certainly seems that someone of Apple is reading these post after all, so maybe any official answers?

Hoping for problem-solving and sincerely,

Martin Stroschein.

I am scared ! My MB is only 1 day old so no problems at the moment. Shieldzone is on the way $50 odd so I hope this helps.

I think it is good that Apple must have seen the discussions. The MacBook is beautiful and I really want it to stay that way...

I, like many others have been impressed with the ipod and tempted away from a cheaper black windows laptop (sorry notebook!)

Hi, I did get a confirmation email from questions@shieldzone.com - and it has come out of my bank account on 19.06.06 as :

PROTECTIVE SOLUTIONS, INC
US 54.95
XR 1.79869
£30.55

I do not think you can track it as its free postage (on a slow boat)

Still waiting for it at the moment - and using a separate usb mouse and keyboard until it arrives (paranoid!) !

It might be worth e-mailing them to check they have got your order.

Shieldzone :

Mine has just arrived in the post this morning 23.06.06! So thats a job to do when I get back from work. So it took about 9 days to get here in the end - which isn't bad.

I just wish I had thought of the idea - as it seems a lot of money for a few bits of plastic. It worked so well for my 2 ipods that I am sure it will be worth it.... WTS..

It is definitely pricey. One suggestion is that if several folks lived close to each other, they could go to an automotive body shop and talk to them about 3M protective clean shielding. This is used in areas for rock-chip protection. Many vehicles use this, and it has to be replaced for collision repairs.

My dealer has rolls of the stuff and I almost used them instead, but I just wasn't in the mood to drive to the place and spend a lot of yada- yada talk on convincing the manager I only needed about a couple of square feed of the stuff.

Hey Larry, That's a good idea. Do you think that if I got some of the 3M shielding it could cause a problem when I try to remove it?

Happy Birthday for then - Mine is the 1st July!

I think that its worth looking at all the installation videos and stuff on their website. I think it will be worth taking the time to put it on carefully (although I think my g/f already thinks I treat the macbook better than her...)

For you UK guys, I wonder if something like this would work?:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000F3AMGE/203-8963270-7133523?v=glance&n=560798

Remember, the main area that needs protection is the wrist pad.

I have been using a bit of screen protecting film over the wristpad - but it does not 'stick' to the texture like it woudl to a screen or gloss finish. So it falls off quick!

I wanted to get the 'all over' shield as it will help to protect the top and bottom as well. I have it for my ipods and it is tough stuff.

It is also useful having it pre-cut to the right size.

I think I am becoming obsessive. Sorry.

i think everyone has become a bit obsesive about the whole discolouration issue. no one wants to see something as 'ugly' as the yellow stains appear on something that costs so much.

Hey, it just occured to me... Over here, you can buy a clear window film at major house-hold stores. Its only purpose is to knock out UV rays from a room. You apply it to the window glass. Has some polarizer or something. But, unless you wear Polaroid sunshades, it is perfectly clear.

You can buy this in very small sheets. It would stick to the wrist pads. You apply it the same way, with a spray bottle of water as a lubricant.

You do have to sit down and work with it. Basically, the install requires you to keep the shield wet, very wet, with a watery lubricant. A squeege tool is provided so you can work the lubericant out, and toward the edge of the computer. You wipe with a towel.

Basically, that is all there is to it. I did have to reposition it a bit, but did that before I applied the lubricant. I kept touching it up and drying with a towel.

A complete skin would be a bit rough to design with this chassis because there are areas on by the pad and keyboard which don't have much "real estate" to apply a skin. The main areas that would get abuse from use would be the wrist pads.

I was concerned with my watch band constantly knocking about the left wrist pad. That certainly would scar up things over there. This shield will help.

It looks like a clear laminate, although that isn't what it is. Think of a transparency sheet. It is clear like that, but soft like a rubbery tape.

I don't think it would look good on a black MacBook because it will give the appearance of a very shiny cover. Where it is applied on a black MacBook would make it shiny.

Regarding clear vs. color covering, ShieldZone's product is what I used, which is not colored, but "clear". There is a product that was mentioned somewhere on this list which has different colors. If someone could find it...

It might be the solution for the yellowed white MacBooks if Apple's doesn't offer a solution for these folks.

It's pretty likely that you won't get the discolouration (60 known cases out of several thousand MacBooks sold), but if you do, Apple won't help you in the slightest. My advice is to do one of the following:

1. Spend $40-$55 for a ShieldZone product.
2. Spend $200 to get a black MacBook (they scuff more easily though)
3. If you can, spend the extra money to get a MacBook Pro. No discolurations of any kind and you get a better laptop.

Just my 2 cents.

On second thought, the ShieldZone might not be such a good idea. One user has discovered the hard way that these shields don't always work.

My friend with a white MB returned the unit to the Apple Store in Honolulu yesterday on day 15 (not day 13 as I had originally posted a few days back on this issue). This was one day past the 14 day return period. There was slight yellowing around the i-sight camera and the fear was that it would spread. It was returned with no questions asked and no restocking fee for a black unit.

One thing that really surprises me is how few people here seem to have actually taken the simple step of taking the computer in to an Apple dealer and asking tht the matter be dealt with!

I don't think the MacBook Pro is really an option. Many of us need the smallest mac laptop we can get, and an extra inch or so in width can make a big difference. Not height though...give me the height w/ silence, cool running, and a dual layer drive over that pitiful slow thing we have anyday.

You're also not really getting that much of a better computer, you're getting a better graphics card, an expansion slot (did you ever use your last powerbook one?), backlit keyboard, and if you need it in your portable, a bigger screen. I don't know what's going on at Apple Design, but can they please update that machine. Keyboard all the way across anyone? The list goes on and on.

If you are seriously concerned about this, or any reported issue. Then buy the 1.83 somewhere that's cheap or even buy it used and just don't worry about it. Like you're really going to be burning a bunch of DVD's at 4x on the road?

.....
Hoping for problem-solving and sincerely,
....

Probably because there are pages upon pages of messages on the topic with no real solution.

And yet, I offer another. ;>)

Try this stuff:
http://www.officedepot.com/ddSKU.do?level=SK&id=204057&Ntt=sanford%20expo&uniqueSearchFlag=true&An=text

If the link is broken, go to http://www.officedepot.com and do a search for "Sanford Expo". I used it a couple of years back to clean some cigarette smoke stained telephones that electronically were still useful for our new smoke-free offices. The phones were white, but stained to a yucky creamed yellow. Sanford Expo removed it.

If anyone is in the Houston - Conroe - Huntsvillel I-45 coverage area, and you have a stained MacBook, I'd love to meet up with you and see if this cleaner will help. My white MacBook is still stain-free, for some reason. Below is a descriptor from Office Depot:

* Tough but gentle cleanser removes board stains. Tough enough to get rid of shadows, ghostings, stains and permanent ink from dry-erase boards — gentle enough not to harm the board.
* Spray bottle for maximum board coverage. Just squirt some in each area of the board for quick, even distribution of cleaner. Handy palm-sized spray bottle is comfortable to hold.

I would propose doing just a very small area on the stain. Cost is only $3.50 or so for the spray bottle.

I have checked and there's no way to get that product from Spain, and the online shop doesn't ship out of the USA :(

Still, it seems like some solutions work for some people, others don't.
I still think it's a manufacturing issue and a problem with apple's QC

Spain? Well, ok...

Look for any white board cleaner that also is able to remove permanent marker writings. The key is any phrase that indicates it is gentle on the material.

Surely Europe has a similiar product. Office supply store??? What about Viking Direct? Surely, Spain has office supply stores:

Okay, we have some of that here at the office, so I decided to try some.

Outcome: No change. I applied Sanford Expo White Board Cleaner to the affected areas of my MacBook several times and rubbed for a good 10 minutes.

Oh well, it was worth a shot...

Oh well, it was worth a shot...

Well, durn... shows that whatever this staining is, nasty nicotine staining can't compete against it!

Sorry, y'all. Thought I had a solution.

MacFixIt got the info from here! grinnnn Indeed, much of the MacFixIt info about staining and heat has come from the messages here.

Regarding a Spanish solution, here's a description on the Sanford Expo bottle:

Can you tell me what that liquid contains?

2-Butoxy Ethanol/acetate, isopropy alcohol. The contents doesn't list the percentages.

We use it all the time on our white marker boards, plastic furniture pieces, electronic equipment and screens. Hasn't hurt anything.

Ethanol kind of hurted my macbook.
I work in a lab so I have all kind of solvents available, tried to clean it with ethanol and isopropyl in a little bit of the upper corner (just to try and check it didnt destroy the plastic) and it looks like the ethanol dissolved the white coating, leaving a very strange effect. Completely unnoticeble unless you know where to look, but again that was like a sq. centimeter.

It's weird, it seems like the different releases had different issues... The first releases seem like they are not discoloring yet, then came a release that the stains can be removed with magic eraser, then a release where magic eraser doesn't work. Are they fixing it where the fixes don't fix? lol :)

While tracking information on the problem is a good thing, I don't think that site's statement that this affects a "substantial majority" of MacBooks has been at all demonstrated. There have been around 20 people complaining, it seems. That's a big enough number to indicate that it's a problem that needs to be resolved, but not nearly enough to show that it's happening to a "substantial majority" (unless Apple's only sold 30 MacBooks).

FWIW, mine's still clean after 3.5 weeks -- it may or may not develop the problem (I'm keeping an eye on these threads to see if a solution is eventually found, just in case).

Based on Apple's current actions, it will consider the problem to be merely cosmetic and won't replace it. I recommend that you wait until either there is a solution that works for everyone, or until Apple recognizes the defect and fixes it.

If you really want a MacBook now, you could get a black one or use some of the clear skins that are availbale from online stores.

ALAR---

I strongly agree with you. It is not up to the user of the Macbook to clean up a mess created by Apple. These widespread "cosmetic" problems should no doubt be covered by warranty because it is obvious that this is a problem with the manufacturer. I hope that more and more people will bring this problem to Apple's attention; that is the only way that we will be able to fix this issue. Please, if you have a Macbook and you are encountering this problem, call up Applecare of bring you 'book into a local store and voice your anger over this problem. We need to find a fix...

After they decided to lock my last post for some reason I decided to finally call Apple about this. They were really nice, they escalated it to a product specalist and had me send in some pictures to escalate to their engineering team. Keep calling and letting them know if you are experiencing this problem and at least you can get a case number that says you called.

My pictures can be found at:

Hopefully they do something about this, my phone call to them left me with a positive attitude on the issue.

Is it possible that this issue has anything to do with the magnetic latch? Perhaps tiny metallic deposits are the cause of the discolouration...

I mention this because some photographs I've seen of this problem seem to show a "pattern" in the discolouration that reminds me of illustrations of magnetic fields from my old physics texts.

If the magnetic latch were attracting tiny metallic deposits from the users' fingers (or from the environment where the MacBook is stored), it would explain why no amount of rubbing or cleaning would shift the discolouration. it might also account for the different colours that various people are seeing.

Perhaps a wild theory, but I thought I'd throw it out there. Might someone have a demagnetizer - perhaps intended for a cassette deck - that they could try?

My macbook purchased on 05/17/06 has begun to yellow on the right palmrest/edge and left of center trackpad. I just noticed this today.

I am right handed and my discoloration so far appears to be from my use, not bad plastic.

The underside of my macbook is a different story, the area where my little rubber feet contact flat surfaces have gone a kind of light pastel green. I was a powerbook user who had to replace many feet, so I'm leary of anything untoward witht he macbook feet.

Lovely for you. So, after less than four-weeks of use, you are happy that your MacBook has started to display this yelllow discoloration? Whatever floats your boat, as they say. Personally, I'm not so eager to say that it's my fault that a month-old machine looks as though it is four years old.

I fix computers for a living, and make art for the other part of my life, both get me pretty dirty in situations where I need to use the macbook concurrently.

I can accept responsibility for a fault of my own creation. What I see on my macbook is the beginnings of a grey/yellowy tinge where I place my hand the most. It doesn't appear to be the same as the pictures associated with this topic. I don't even think I could photograph it yet.

My machine definitely doesn't look four years old, either. Neither my studio or house are air conditioned, and they've been re-roofing our office this week so the roof-mounted hvac units have been off. Currently it is 84f in here, and my hands are clammy/sweaty.

I never said I was happy with the yellowing, you put words in my mouth. I am more unhappy with the mooing and wifi dropping issues than the tinge I see. If it turns out that this is a chemical problem; bad plastic, reaction with my skin then yes I will get the issue corrected via warranty.

Why so angry?
What would float my boat would be a response from apple on any of the issues we've had. I've called them 3 times about the issues that affect me without solution. Being snippy with other users on this forum won't get us anywhere.

Hi Eric,

Maybe you didn't make clear information in the first post. "Having no such yellow stain, even within a worse working place and amibance" is quiet important to the topic, too. But, that is what it was missed in your previous post and it was some kind delphic. While some others suffer from such unfair and bad luck situation, it looks like a little of ambitious, too.

According to current information, we are also able to it is more like QC problem.

I apologize, allow me to clarify everything I've said regarding my macbook yellowing:

I do have a slight yellow tinge, it is in line with my normal heavy usage areas. I use my macbook in dirty environments. If it gets worse and cannot be cleaned, or takes on the attributes of a plastics/chemical problem, I will be getting it fixed via warranty.

Similarly:
My new nintendo ds lite, with what feel like the same plastics, has the same tinge forming around the shoulder button area. I was using it while waiting for paint to dry in the studio. It is one week old.

Hello,

That's exactly the point... That it gets yellow from time to time because of heavy usage, it's ok, as soon as it's washable.

So the problem is that: It's not washable (according to people concerned)! And so it will obviously get worse from time to time and you'll get a very ugly looking MacBook (cf photos published here) without the possibility to remove the stains or even attenuate them.

That's the problem!!!

Eric, I should apologise. Re-reading my reply to you, I was inexcusably rude. I posted at a time I should not have done, as I was very tired, back from an after-work drink, and I had also just finished reading numerous posts elsewhere in which people such as myself complaining of this premature yellowing had been told that we were Apple-haters, whingers, that we didn't wash our hands enough, that we washed our hands *too much* and so on. So yes, I was angry, but not at you. So: sorry. I have to admit that saying my machine looks "four years old" was an exaggeration. In all other ways, my machine looks lovely, and I am very happy with it. I am lucky enough not to have the whining or mooing (actually I have heard one or two "moos", but one or two moos in three weeks I can live with). And that is why I don't want to get a replacement - because I agree that the yellowing is preferable to either of those problems, as it does not distract me from my work. Like you, I want some sort of response from Apple, but so far I have just been told that the problem is "cosmetic".

To keep this post on-topic (so that the thread doesn't get locked): if anybody does have any luck cleaning it, I would love to know how - right now I am worried that if it carries on like this, in a few weeks it *will* look four years old.

If the stains are biological in origin, perhaps a solution containing biological washing powder (intended for clothes) might shift them. Not sure what unwanted effect it might have on plastic, but the enzymes that are responisble for the cleaning action shouldn't damage plastic - it certainly doesn't harm the plastic buttons on clothes.

The only use of biological washing powder on plastics I can find on the web is a recommendation of its use to restore old telephones.

Might be worth a try.

Gave it a shot but unfortunately, it's a no go. Nothing is going to remove these stains short of Apple replacing the pads with better ones made from a different plastic. And while they're doing that, how about making them have the same white tint as the rest of the computer and making them glossy instead of matte. Glossy is non-porous and wouldn't get dirty. It might scratch if you wear a watch but otherwise, you're skin won't do much harm to it. If they use the same technology that Colorware uses then they would get scratch resistant glossy.

C'mon Apple, my laptop is less than a month old and looks like it's 10 years old. What's going on here? Overheating, inverter problems and plastic that looks like crap. This isn't the Apple that I'm used to. I think a real solution for the problem is due and I think Apple should start a recall soon to get this problem fixed.

Well from what I read from some of the deleted posts, it started showing a pattern. Some Macbooks after a specific serial number didn't have this problem. But then after we started thinking that there was a pattern turns out that Macbooks even after the specific serial number did in fact have a problem. I don't know the serial number so I can't provide it, but right now it seems that it can affect all of them.

Well as you can see here there are macbook upto week 22 with this problem (week 22 being June 5th to June 11th.

But then again, remember that those built on Week 23 have only been used for a week, 1.5 week tops, which wasn't enough for my macbook (week 21) to show any stains. After 2 weeks of use I could see a slight shadow of a stain and now 2.5 weeks later it's quite evident there's a serious stain here. I tried to take a picture a few days ago and you couldn't see it but now you can. I will post the pics in that website I gave above so you can see.

I foresee that at the end of this coming week, we will have a lot more week 22 macbooks and probably one or two week 23.

I have been advised by my family's attorney to take this case to the Trade authorities in Spain and see how this is taken from Apple, in general the customer protection laws in the European Union are quite strict.

Just one thought: I realised about this problem almost a week ago, as I said, it was a failrly fain shadow-stain. Then I started take VERY GOOD CARE of my laptop (ok, notebook :D). But it got worse. Way worse. No cleaning stopped the progressive damage of the plastic. Oh, and washing my hands twice as often as I used to * did not help either. Also, no cheetos involved here. Hate them

*** Note: I have to wash my hands very often because of my work, I'm a scientist and need to work in an sterile environment so the cells cultures don't die. So, I used to wash my hands very often, now I do it twice as often to keep my macbook from further damage. Guess what, it's not helping. APPLE!!!

get a black macbook with 2gb ram, and get Windows installed on Parallels.
That should be more than enough for a few years. There's some chemitry software only available for Windows hence the suggestion to get it installed in parallels, so you can run it side by side with MacOSX (no need to reboot the computer with Boot Camp)

No, it's because Apple is having this issue with discoloring white macbooks. It's a lottery, you never know if your macbook si gonna show this problem. So better by safe than sorry, get the black one or wait until this problem is fixed.

Does this decoloration problem occurs to all macbooks
or just someones?

No stains at all here... Three weeks (I think) old. Several hours daily of use.

I have a 10 day old white macbook 2.0GHz and I went to the Apple store to see if I could exchange it for a black. I had already cut out the UPC of my box for the nano rebate for students so they said that if I brought my macbook in, the geniuses would try to clean it and then if they couldn't they would let me trade it and then pay some for the black model. However my discoloration isn't bad at all I clean it everyonce in a while and use an external kboard.. but the thing is I know it's prone to get discolored.. so I have 4 days to get it really dirty and get apple to help me with a black one, or just order that invisible shield. gah.

You all have ring around the Macbook. It's a rather simple yet elusive chemistry.
There is no simple way to clean it for a computer.

Bleach? Wiping with chemicals won't do it or harm it. I tried it on my 3 year old keyboard many times. It's a lost cause there. There is a discolor on parts I never touched and then you can see the original white on the strip by the delete, \, return, shift keys.

I can also see yellowing on the top of the 1/4 of all the keys (I took my keyboard apart).

To have such a discoloration on near new notebooks is disturbing.

Treat it like a dirty yellow shirt and nuke it with chems. It's only a $1000 computer and it's already ruined.

I've been noticing this on iBooks for years; they're white and unless you're albino, we're not... usually I would just use some nail polish remover or alcohol to clean it off in the past.

We know this, but in the iBook the stains take months to appear, not 1/2/3 weeks like with the MacBook

For what it's worth, both my iBook and my husband's developed grayish stains in under two weeks. Our older G3s never stained, and actually stayed pretty white for years. Apple has cheaped out on materials in the past few years, and it's starting to show--literally. Maybe that's why they've started making black machines.

I have an idea, and I don't mean to pull anything away from the original intent of the website.

What if an area was also provided for folks who have no staining issues, that they also have an option to post their information, such as hours/daily in use. I'd suggest the stain-free computers should have heavy use as part of the criteria.

Perhaps a trend could be established, how the computers are used, are wrists touching the wrist pad? That sort of thing?

There really has got to be a defined reasonwhy others of us who use these things have no stains at all.

I have a great idea to prevent the stain from starting on your Macbook in the first place! Not only that, but those pesky yellow (actually, black) stains in your lungs will also disappear.

STOP SMOKING!

i personally dont think the stains are caused via smoking but the plastic absorbing moisture from the skin and reacting with the plastic and heat.

Thanks for the advice. I didn't realize I was a smoker, nor did I realize there was a correlation between my apparently subliminal smoking habit and the PINK stains that have popped up on my MacBook.

Seriously, don't make assumptions. Many of us have stained MacBooks without smoking, eating Cheetos while typing, or other such nonsense.

You'll need more than 35 people before they start to take notice. I would imagine that it would take hundreds before they pay attention and not dismiss it as user-created problem.

I got my MacBook last week. After reading about the potential yellowing problem I bought the kit from www.shieldzone.com mentioned early on in this thread. It was delivered 3 days after ordering - I'm in the UK.

Application for the palm rests and trackpad were very easy even taking into account the terror of putting something wet on the MacBook. The protection for the top cover was a bit more difficult but was ok.

I'd recommend it to anyone from a point of view of protection against damage as much as the yellowing. Yes it's expensive but it is very good. I just wish I'd bought stuff for the iPods as well to save on the shipping costs.

shieldzone says
"he invisibleSHIELD is completely removable. Better still, unless you take it off yourself, the invisibleSHIELD will stay put. Originally designed to protect helicopter blades, the invisibleSHIELD will stay on under the roughest circumstances. Unlike the inexpensive static cling protectors, the invisibleSHIELD is meant to last!"

and that removing it is "just like peeling of a sticker...start at one corner..."

Pretty good stuff. I just received a kit this afternoon, applied it and I'm impressed. The kit included a trackpad protector, but I peeled it off---just doesn't feel right on the trackpad and it is hurts the sensitivity of the pad a bit.

Other folks' experience may vary with that part of the kit.

It is definitely a no-brainer, though. Even if the staining issue didn't exist, I would think that all the white Macs should have this kit, if anything, just only in the wrist pad area.

Very pricey, but I think we need this, or its equivalent.

I have a small light patch forming on my right palm rest. I'm really bothered by this, and i'm tempted to take it back to the apple store. But I don't think they would replace it and i'd have to spend $200 on restocking fees. I hate to think what this is going to look like a year from now.. I have only 2 days left on my 14 day return policy from the apple store. What to do?

Is it possible that we could send them in months from now when they get reall really bad, and they could replace the whole case to something that doesnt stain?

From Europe: there is a small stain on the trackpad button of my white MacBook. When you try to clean it with water, it disappears momentarily, but returns almost immediately. My guess is that the plastic is water resistant, so you probably need something stronger. By the way: I'm using the MacBook only when travelling, and often use an external mouse, so the discoloration isn't very obvious on my machine, yet.

Has anyone gotten one of the ShieldZone shields at the same time they got their MacBook? Do they work as well as they claim to?

I'm thinking of getting a 2 GHz MacBook, but all of the staining problems are really scaring me. On the other hand, it's what... 35? ... users so far that have had this problem out of the thousands of MacBooks sold, so the probability of this happening doesn't seem all that large. (Even though quite a few users probably haven't visited these forums).

They work exceedingly well. Even if we didn't have the staining issues, this would be good to have, if anything, to protect against watch band, jewlery scratches.

The kit I ordered included a top cover, which I am not using, a left/right wrist pad protector, track-pad button protector, and track pad cover.

I removed the track pad cover---just too weird feeling.

What else can I say? I have messages posted all over this website about the shieldzone material. All it is is just 3M clear covering material, pre-cut for your computer.

I have no idea what else I can convey. What more information is needed?

It is just a clear covering. Nothing more, nothing less.

I'm sorry about the discoloration. I have no idea how to respond to that. I don't have the problem so can't make a response. I have no experience.

But, I do have experience with the shieldzone stuff. It is just clear covering material. That is all there is to it. The website, which I guess you claim is making a salespitch even shows how to apply the material. What else can I give you? Tell me, I'm eager to help.

More like a hard laminate cover. Glossy. I am recommending everyone get this, if anything, to protect the wrist pads from jewelry and watch band scratches. The yellow stain stuff certainly should be prevented by this, assuming it comes from skin.

My black MB looks great. I now have a glossy finish. Smudges clean off easily and pose no danger to the finish.

I am worried about this problem, and I don't even have my MacBook yet, but for you users without stains I may have an idea. What I am going to do is use a regular mouse when I am at my desk at home/starbucks/school. I will use the built in one when it is in my lap. I usually click around, and when I type it is only for a minute or so period, and I take my hands away from the keys istead of resting them on the computer. Maybe if everyone tries this we can prevent stains for a longer period.

Noble effort, but I just can't see being that disciplined for the lifetime of the computer. And I'm not discounting this staining problem---I am very sure I'd be howling the loudest if my computer had the problem.

So, fearing this, I bought the shieldzone stuff and placed it on my stain-free computer.

Furthermore, I read of a message somewhere here of a user drawing a very light line of ink on his white computer, and that the computer soaked up the ink like a blotter. Never could remove the ink.

I did this with a very tiny line on my computer (why, Rymal, you stupid!) but I had no problem and the black ink was rubbed out.

So, I dunno the what or why of this staining.

But, if my computer just came out of the box, the shieldzone product, or equivalent, would be the first thing I would install.

I went to the mac store (Brea, CA) tonight and complained of the yellow discolorations and odd fan noises, and got it replaced no questions asked. He didn't even look at the macbook to see the discolorations, he just gave me a new one. I was so impressed that I used the money i was planning on using to pay restocking fees and invested into the applecare 3 year warranty. I also have some invisibleSHIELD coming in on Friday to put on my new macbook.

Hey people, please WAKE UP.
1° EVERYBODY knows, or should know by now: never buy a first version Apple product, unless you're prepared to take all the faults, mistakes, etc. You KNOW it, don't you? You are a free tester for apple, at your own expense, and that it your choice. Steve tricked you into it, maybe, and that is his job. And yes, I think he is absolutely brilliant at it. I know, he fooled me a few times as well. And a lot of others, as far as I can see here. (Giving all these people a controlable forum is a another brilliant idea, by the way.)
2° Take a look at het guitarworld. Yes, I say it again: the guitarworld. EVERYBODY knows that a guitar build in China or South-Korea or Mexico is inferior to one build in the US or Canada. Of course, thet latter are a lot more expensive. Make your choice, it is about your priorities, it is about YOUR choice. But don't expect gold if you're just paying for copper.
And remember: Macbook's and Macbook Pro's are NOT build in the US or Canada or Germany. Quality control? Wooha! Not for this price, sir!
So why am I still a Mac-fan? Because I have (and had) very stable systems. How come? Read again.

Rudy,

You presume that all second (and further) revisions are problem free? I waited for the original G5s to be revised before taking the plunge. I bought myself a Rev.B machine that had numerous problems and was in all honesty no better than a Rev.A. I had three G5s in three months.

Problems are not specific to revision A equipment. They can appear at anytime.

And why do you also presume goods manufactured in Asia are inferior to American, Canadian or German ones? I own many Asian products that have lasted longer than comparable 'Western' ones with far fewer faults; from audio and household equipment to cars.

Problems are not always specific to region or revision, and effectively telling these unfortunate people they were stupid to buy a revision A MacBook is insulting.

Rudy... is there anything about the Mac that has given a positive experience for your Mac experiences? Nearly all your messages are a constant battle.

OK, let me explain this clearly for everyone. No magic eraser or such other product will work on these discolorations. Many people have suggested it so far and suggesting it again will not change the fact that the majority of the people are not having success with it.

I would like to refer everyone to a very important website:

http://stainedbook.info

I came across it. If your MacBook was made in the 19, 20, 21, or 22 week, you may likely have this problem. It seems that this is the trend. I highly suggest you call AppleCare and even refer them to this webpage. If you yourself have th discoleration, then contact the webpage and contribute to the cause.

This certain batch seems to have a defect. That is the reason why there is discoleration. Not becuase people smoke, not becuase they are dirty people, and no amount of abrasive material will properly get it off. I use properly, beucase you can damage the plastic and still get off the stains (from what other have been reporting).

I want to asure everyone that though there has been a lot of talk about the discoloration, in comparision to the number sold, only a percentage have had defects such as these. There have been many other people who (like myself) have not experianced this problem.

Sorry that you think it is insulting, JustinR, because that is not what I meant or intended. Or even said. I said that people who buy a Rev.A machine know what they are doing, and the risks they are taking. EXPECT problems. Come on people, should we honestly be wondering in what week a premium priced machine is made? The last time I bought a revA, it was an Alpowerbook. Screendots, remember? They knew it all along, and refused to react for a long long time. And THAT makes me very angree.
Especially when I see and read about the company's way of reacting. Somewhere on a forum here I read this advice: if you call apple, and get a brutal and offensive reaction(!), call again, and ask for someone else, until you get what you want. Some people had to call severall times. Hallo?! Is this consumer friendlyness? I know it is not an easy job, but service can make the diference.
I am sorry to read that even mentioning this, is considered a battle.
About the production countries, you may be right. It was just a statement of personale experiences, time and time again. But reputations change, that is true. And once you have a bad one, it is **** to change it over again. (And yes, I DO like Apple products, but to be completely honest: no longer for the hardware, but for the software.)

Where are the pictures of different machines with this issue? I haven't seen one, but I'm going to try to look at this with an open mind now. It doesn't help me that the defects site is in Xbox 360 green. With the attitudes expressed in many of the posts I find it difficult to take a lot of it seriously. Censored swearing just doesn't help your cause. Neither does outright profanity.

Instead of the defect oriented site, why not try for a solutions site. Just listing the ineffective treatments isn't going to encourage people to get involved.

The question I have is why would you put transparent film on your machine instead of a color or just matte white or grey?

All the pictures indicate areas where your hands would often be and where a transfer of oils could occur. The upper deck w/ the keyboard and trackpad could be replaced and the situation would be over, with the exception of the area around the isight on the display bezel.

Would you rather have your machine repaired all the time or fixed once? This doesn't seem to be happening to every white macbook, so there's obviously a chance that there is a manufacturing defect in certain components (week of manufacture doesn't mean everything was made then). I would try to be constructive about this and work with Apple as much as possible to see that problem machines are repaired. A little patience would really pay off if you don't want a bunch of repairs occurring.

I have taken the time to read this entire thread (and follow the links) this morning. I would hesitate to put the wrist rest protectors on a MacBook for fear that if, by chance, this is a heat-related issue, the plastic over the wrist rests could actually make the situation worse.

Some people have complained about heat issues. I wonder if there is a connection between that and the discoloration problems.

I've read the links saying that it is not believed to be likely, but still…I wonder.

I much prefer the white MacBook to the black one, but I won't be buying one for awhile yet. I'm just here scoping things out, and I do realize there are just a tiny percentage of MacBooks with this problem. Those percentages are little consolation, though, if YOUR MacBook happens to be one of those in the minority.

The wristpad area, when compared to the other zones on the computer case, is much cooler for the MacBook. The hard drive runs cool, as well as the battery.

For proof, remove the battery after a long session. It will be warm, if not cool. Likewise, remove the hard drive and it is suprisingly cool. Obviously, this is with the components in my MacBook and I don't have the opportunity to test with other MacBooks since there are none in my geographical area.

My white MacBook is still stain-free, for some reason.

Others have complained of heat issues. Maybe it's no coincidence that yours runs cool and doesn't have the stains?

There is now a report of the ShieldZone product not preventing the discolouration! Looks like it's not as good as everyone is saying it is.

The poster who started all of this, who has been quoted out the gazoo recanted and corrected himself, stating that the staining occured BEFORE the Shieldzone was applied.

From the stained macbook website:

http://web.mac.com/jmmo20/iWeb/stainedBook/blog-news/blog-news.html

"UPDATE: Discoloration stains & ShieldZone

Update
....Apparently he ALREADY HAD the staining problem and applied the protector film [afterwards] to keep it from getting worse. This did not help. I leave the original message for informational purposes, but take into account the information provided is misleading.
I would ask everyone to be sincere and the most accurate as possible, otherwise this will lose credibility."

The two mentioned sites are merely quoting one another, using messages from a single user. See the above message. The ShieldZone material, if applied when the MacBook is clean, stainfree, will probably keep the MacBook stainfree.

I say "probably" because none of us really know what the staining is and why it is. Going by the sites' own user responses, out of over 35,000 hits, less that 100 users have logged staining issues.

I called apple care the other day about it. He said that he had never heard of the problem. But while he was saying it, he was mumbling and kept tripping up on his words. It was kinda funny. He sounded like he was nervous or something.
Anyhoo, he promptly said he couldn't put this problem on my file and that I should take my computer into an apple store. He definately sounded like he had heard of this issue before and his response sounded like he had said that before. Who knows. He sure didn't want to make a case # for it though.
