Laurel Canyon: the Playlist

Here’s the final playlist for tonight’s reading at Book Soup. Tragically, Love’s “7 and 7 Is” dropped out when I burned the CD, so we’ll miss Arthur Lee seething “if I don’t start crying/it’s because that I have got no eyes.”

Bear in mind we’re covering territory that stretches from 1965 to the late 1970s, with an emphasis on Laurel Canyon in either in lyrics or metaphor. Also that I had to keep the playing time to about an hour and had to leave a lot out.

Thanks to Art and Mewsical for their suggestions. I’ll post photos of the party tomorrow:

“Cocaine”—Jackson Browne; “Expecting to Fly”—Buffalo Springfield; “Burning of the Midnight Lamp”—Jimi Hendrix; “Hot Burrito #1″—Gram Parsons (as performed by the Mavericks); “Are You Experienced”—Jimi Hendrix; “Ooh Las Vegas”—Gram Parsons (as performed by the Cowboy Junkies); “One of the Boys”—Mott the Hoople; “Welcome to Hollywood”—Leon Russel; “Californa Dreamin’”—the Mamas and the Papas; “She”—Gram Parsons (performed by Emmylou Harris and Sheryl Crow); “Plastic People”—Frank Zappa and the Mothers; “I’ll Feel a Whole Lot Better”—the Byrds; “I Don’t Want to Miss You”—Karla Bonoff; “Laurel Canyon Home”—John Mayall; “Bluebird”—Buffalo Springfield; “Get It On” (Band a Gong)—T-Rex; “L.A. Woman”—the Doors.
