Trip to Africa

President and Mrs. Bush traveled to Africa from February 15-21, 2008. They visited Benin, Tanzania, Rwanda, Ghana, and Liberia. The trip was an opportunity for the President to review firsthand the significant progress since his last visit in 2003 in efforts to increase economic development and fight HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other treatable diseases, as a result of the United States robust programs in these areas.

President Bush has signed legislation modernizing foreign intelligence law to better protect America, and this must be made permanent. The Protect America Act Modernizes The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) gives intelligence professionals the tools they urgently need to gather information about our enemies, while protecting the civil liberties of Americans.

And we're determined to make the year 2008 a strong chapter in our relationship. We view the Czech Republic as a strategic partner. We've discussed a variety of issues."

President Bush Meets with Special Envoy to the Organization of the Islamic Conference: President Bush on Wednesday said, "A while ago I announced that I would be naming a Presidential Envoy to the Organization of Islamic Conference, and I am pleased to announce it's Sada Cumber. He's a very successful businessman, a person who knows the Islamic world, and has agreed to serve in that capacity. Sada, I want to thank you very much."

President and Mrs. Bush Discuss Picturing America Initiative: President Bush on Tuesday said, "In all these ways, "We the People" does an outstanding job of passing America's rich heritage on to future generations. Today I'm pleased to unveil a new project under this program -- the "Picturing America" Initiative. This Initiative will educate children about the great people and places and moments in our history using American art and masterpieces that depict them."
