Don't miss Ontario Coronation table grapes at supermarkets until Sept. 15.

With crisp, juicy flesh, a vibrant blue-purple exterior and an intense sweet-tart taste, these semi-seedless grapes (sold in 1.5-litre baskets) are a new favourite.

The Ontario Fresh Grape and Tender Fruit Growers, says this year's Coronation table grape harvest is estimated at 2,200 tons. Combined with 500 tons of the traditional varieties (Fredonia and Concord) that's up eight per cent from last year.

The Coronation grape was conceived at the Summerland Research Station in B.C. and launched in Niagara in 2000.

Coronation grapes are best eaten on their own, as a garnish or with cheese/fruit platters. But they can be incorporated into desserts, sauces, jams, jellies and juice. For recipes, visit ontariotenderfruit.com.

Select grapes that are firmly attached to their stems and are a full blue colour.

Leave the grapes in their container and refrigerate for 7 to 10 days. Just before eating, gently wash them in a colander.

To freeze, wash, dry and stem grapes. Pack in airtight containers and freeze. Eat as a snack right from the freezer. Frozen grapes can replace fresh grapes in recipes as they retain their intense colour and flavour and hold their shape when thawed. When using frozen grapes for preserves, thaw in refrigerator just until crushable.
