Generally speaking, which of these choices contributes the most to your enjoyment of a musical?
A strong book with an interesting story and lyrics that are specific to the characters and situations.
Memorable music with inventive orchestrations and vocal arrangements heard though a natural-sounding design.
Outstanding performances.
Inventive staging and choreography.
Impressive work from the set, costume and lighting designers.
Most of these choices really figure in equally.
I don't get it. Why do they have to sing and dance?
