More Japanese deplore Putin's rights record

More Japanese see Russian President Vladimir Putin's record on democracy and human rights in Russia as negative than positive, according to a survey conducted jointly by The Yomiuri Shimbun and the BBC.

Putin was seen as having a negative influence by 48 percent of respondents, compared with 33 percent who regarded his record on these issues as positive.

Responses from all Group of Seven nations--Japan, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and the United States--were critical of Putin's record on these issues.

Among the seven countries, 56 percent regarded his record as negative, compared with 26 percent who saw his role as positive.

The survey of 15,957 adult citizens from 31 countries was conducted between October and January.
