The first of hopefully several TV Drama Reviews, this week I cooked up one for the sensation of the summer, 내 이름은 김삼순 (My Lovely Sam-Soon). Don't expect the same level of detail of my DVD movie reviews, but this is another tentative to broaden the scope of our Korean coverage. If you like the idea, we'll review more Dramas in the future.

For those of you who wanted DVD movie reviews, they'll be back next week with 간큰가족 (A Bold Family).

THE SHOW

Starting in Japan in the late 80s, the idea of TV Dramas targeting the younger generation, trying to showcase some of their struggles, their ambition and their problems quickly gained a strong following in Korea. Even though the foundation of Korean TV Dramas had always been based on Family Dramas, Historical Dramas and long, painstakingly elaborate Daily Dramas which had a similar structure to American Soap Opera (but storytelling was on another planet, in terms of quality, which makes any mention of 'soap opera' when talking about Korean TV Dramas a little annoying), those 'Trendy' Dramas were and still are what leads the Korean Wave. Although the majority of the Korean viewing public points to the mid to late 90s as the start of such trend - with works such as 별은 내 가슴에 (Star in My Heart) - the first seeds of the genre were planted a half decade before, with the 1992 MBC Drama 질투 (Jealousy) starring Choi Jin-Shil and Choi Su-Jong, who would go on to become the two biggest draws in Korean TV Drama history.

More often than not, 'trendy' Dramas weren't following the trend, they were setting a new one. If you look at the Top 50 Rated shows of all time in Korea (or at least from the early 90s on, when TNS started collecting realistic rating shares), it's full of trendy Dramas, which set up many of the cliches you see acknowledged as cliches on today's TV Dramas. Although Korean movies have always been on the frontline when it came to underlining cultural and political movements in the country, such as the 'youth angst' film of the 70s and 80s, the social protest film of the late 80s up to the mid 90s, commercial Cinema in Korea could never really feel the 'pulse of the nation' in the early to mid 90s, with often formulaic fare made cheaply to sell a few Video Tapes and be financially convenient for Chaebols, or distant (but often excellent) arthouse fare which only packed a punch if you loved film culture. Even though Park Joong-Hoon and other figures emerged thanks to their roles in films, Dramas were definitely more popular in that period. That's why popular trends in the country have often been associated to and better portrayed in TV Dramas.

Sometimes, that ability to communicate via popular trends created works with a depth that rivaled that of the most accomplished Korean films. There's no work - TV Drama or Film - which better shows the struggle of Korean people during the IMF crisis than the classic TV Drama 그대 그리고 나 (You and I), and although Jang Sun-Woo made an arguably more powerful statement of the Gwangju Massacre in his masterpiece 꽃잎 (A Petal), the way the monstrously popular Drama 모래시계 (The Sandglass) dealt with the event is still inked in Korean people's minds. In certain cases, staying close to popular trends can create wonders. Imagine a show like 네 멋대로 해라 (Ruler of Your Own World), which started as a simple love triangle and became the most poignant portrait of this generation's 'Hongdae Youth', a tremendously written Urban Drama with layer upon layer of complexity, great writing, top notch music from some of the best underground rock bands in the country (especially 3rd Line Butterfly and Bulldog Mansion), and excellent acting from four leads who would go on to become major players in today's film and TV Drama scene: Lee Na-Young, Yang Dong-Geun, Gong Hyo-Jin and Lee Dong-Geon.

Of course there's the other side of the coin, trendy Dramas not only were an often impressive mirror to society, but more often than not created negative stylistic and narrative trends that afflicted TV Dramas for a long time. The obsession over the 콩쥐팥쥐 (Kongjwi & Patjwi, a popular Korean fairy tale) syndrome - making many shows of the period a simple fight off between a poor, good looking heroine fighting against all odds to overcome her obstacles, defeating the ugly, rich girl in the process - was one of them. While that sometimes made for interesting viewing, bringing class struggle to the forefront, it was mostly an excuse to make easy targets for sympathy, and was often littered with black and white characters. An inevitable offspring of 'Good Girl-Bad Girl' Dramas were the 'Cinderella' Dramas. Similar setup, with an ugly duckling in distress finding Prince Charming. Some of those were even good, like MBC's 1997 rendition of the story 신데렐라 (Cinderella) starring Hwang Shin-Hye and Lee Seung-Yeon, but the majority were far fetched exercises in substance-less glamour and vapid looks from pretty stars. Although the Cinderella syndrome carried over into the new generation, and became a leading force in 'Korean Wave' TV Dramas, the idea of Prince Charming and Cinderella herself have changed over the years, to adapt to new popular trends.

It used to be the poor, angelic girl who grew up with rich foster parents, with an evil sister playing tricks on her (tricks the parents would never find out about until the end), and a group of beautiful, stylish, rich Prince Charming miraculously all falling for her. That's exactly the set up of shows like 'Star in My Heart', which despite an incredible cast (Choi Jin-Shil, Cha In-Pyo, Jeon Do-Yeon, Ahn Jae-Wook, Park Won-Sook, Jo Mi-Ryung, Kim Jung-Eun, Oh Ji-Myung...) was often lost in the pitfalls of the genre, with greats like Park Won-Sook wasted playing iconic 'evil rich mother' roles, and capable actors like Park Cheol playing idiotic mama's boys. People went crazy over shows like that, and it was actually one of the first TV Dramas to be exported overseas, creating the foundation for the current Korean Wave. But it didn't age too well, I'm afraid.

The weird combination of most TV Drama writers being women and most PDs being men always created a weird clash of styles: the first metrosexuals emerged in Korean trendy Dramas of the late 90s (think Ahn Jae-Wook and his ridiculous haircut in 'Star in My Heart'), but the space where female characters could move was still limited. A certain evolution of the genre came last year, with 파리의 연인 (Lovers in Paris). Sure, it was still the poor girl meeting the son of a Chaebol family, but the details were a little different. This new age Cinderella had become smarter, more interested in developing her career or at least trying to make one, less dependent on men, and less 'Korean woman in the 90s.' But the show also jumpstarted other negative trends, like the reliance on overseas locations adding glitz and glamour when subtlety and character development should be the focus. It was a good show though, loved in Korea and abroad, catapulting Park Shin-Yang to a new start in his career, and making Kim Jung-Eun an even bigger star.

Somewhere in the middle of all this, hidden away, tucked under the softness of her stuffed piggy is Kim Sam-Soon (Kim Seon-Ah). Not particularly pretty (unlike most Cinderellas), not the recipient of a perfect body (again, unlike most Cinderellas), not particularly confident in her abilities as a talented patissier, haunted by memories of her father, with a mother whose temper is quicker than a KTX, we meet Sam-Soon for the first time as she's dumped in bizarre fashion by her boyfriend. Jobless, she finds out talent is not the only thing that is needed in today's Seoul. But that's only until Mr. Prince Charming, Sam-Shik (Hyun Bin) discovers her charm... via a 'fake' relationship to fool his hot tempered mother (another wonderful performance by Na Moon-Hee). Here we are again: poor girl, chaebol (well, not really, but you get the idea) son, bitchy mother. Ooops! They did it again...

...then again, maybe not. If this were a Hollywood film or a soap opera, Kim Seon-Ah would have had to wear the same kind of prosthetics that Eddie Murphy wore in 'The Nutty Professor', but no. As some of the interviewee on the DVD's special features suggest, Sam-Soon is a 'normal size Korean woman.' Of course it's not normal size if you go down chic boutiques in Seoul, where hordes of miniskirt wearing beauties will become (pleasant to the eyes, but kind of obnoxious) sensory overload. Sam-Soon is like millions of other Korean women, struggling with weight not because she's fat, but because she has to conform to the rules of beauty some facets of Korean society require nowadays. She's a perfectly talented patissier, having studied a few years in France, and can make a mean cake, but nobody seems to give her a chance. It's just like countless other people who are sitting home watching TV because nobody wants you unless you're from SNU (whoa... that rhymes).

But why did Korea fall in love with Sam-Soon? She swears a storm, isn't much of a snappy dresser, always ends up drunker than men twice her age, is insecure, constantly daydreams and cannot channel all her wits, charms and talents into a cohesive 'something' which will make her succeed. Hey... that's your answer. Our 'lovely' Kim Sam-Soon is loved because she's just like millions of women out there, with all their charms and flaws honestly and intelligently laid bare. So then, even the trite setup of the story becomes just a formality, for the way Kim Yoon-Cheol makes the Drama flow, and Kim Do-Woo's witty writing help Sam-Soon become a joy to watch. Kim Seon-Ah has done characters like this before, but the way she projects this idea of the real 'girl next door' is something of a triumph in her already successful career. It's not the usual cliche of the 'national sweetheart' winning the hearts of people, there's an underlying realistic tone which often might make silly scenes end up becoming more striking than anyone ever expected.

Hyun Bin, playing the 'Prince Charming', is your usual new age 'metrosexual', but with a few touches of realism. He might be a rich spoiled kid, but has that air of traditionalism, of looking for a side of things which is often in shades of gray rather than the black and white other characters in Cinderella Dramas were used to. Although I must confess I still haven't found what's so special about the guy, even if I agree he's a pretty good actor, Hyun Bin eludes a certain charm, different from your usual Chaebol kid. This is not the same old story of a whiny mama's boy who can't lift a finger without spending cash, is completely alienated from the real world, and communicates via his status.

The supposedly 'bad' girl is quite an interesting character, too, perhaps because of Jung Ryeo-Won's acting. I was just like most other people, thinking she would be another singer-turned-actress stinking up the place, but she's actually quite good. Her range of expression is believable, and even when the most cliched elements of her character emerge, she treats those in a way that make her character shine, instead of highlighting possible flaws in storytelling. And, finally! A character who lived years in America who actually speaks English the way it should be. I couldn't stand anymore pretty people being sent off to 'exotic locations', practicing their awfully accented Konglish off of prompters, never giving the idea they spent more than an afternoon in the place. But Jung is different: she's articulate, her pronunciation excellent, and there's no emotional transition between English and Korean acting (even good actors like Lee Young-Ae failed when it came to acting in English, so it's not 'that' easy).

Which brings me to the biggest surprise of the show: Daniel Henney. Look at the recent and past history of Korean films and TV Dramas and you find two types of foreigners portrayed via those media, more or less: the one (mostly Asian) who completely integrates within Korean society, assuming enough language skills to look the part. Think of people like Yoo Min, or Shu from popular teenybopper group S.E.S. (She's Korean, but grew up in Japan, same thing with Ayumi from Sugar); then there's the Itaewon rejects, people pulled off the streets, who are giving their acting job as much importance as what the people who brought them in gave them. And this only ends up reinforcing stereotypes Koreans have of certain foreigners, and at the same time the idea foreigners have of Koreans. How many times have you seen your usual beefcake westerner stinking up the place because of a silly or non-existent script painting him as a simple 'talking cardboard'? Even when intentions are good, like in Kim Sung-Soo's 영어완전전복 (Please, Teach Me English), the spectrum is so thin you always feel like no foreigner could possibly survive in Korea without amazing efforts, which is not the case, obviously. Well, finally, this Drama offers a realistic portrait of a foreigner (albeit with Korean blood) coming to terms with the language barrier, trying to make an effort to overcome those barriers.

Henry Kim, played by Henney, is the kind of guy you could meet anyday on the streets of Seoul. Although the fact he's good looking is often acknowledged, it never becomes one of those annoying exercises in 'reverse exotica' where the western guy (or girl) is just made an object and the person behind is never given a space. I love the fact the guy is not portrayed as a macho beefcake Yankee coming to Korea to steal our hero's girl, and sometimes you actually feel the other way: Jung's character could realistically make a better choice staying with Henry. But how that situation ends up, I'll leave to you. What's important is that through good acting and especially intelligent writing, for perhaps the first time ever a realistic portrayal of a foreigner in Korea has been made. Which, you'll agree, is a step in the right direction. Now let's see if the other way around happens (based on a few episodes of Kim Yoon-Jin and Daniel Dae Kim bringing up age old stereotypes Americans have of Korean people in 'Lost', I'm afraid that's still merely a mirage, though I'd be happy to be proven wrong).

As a longtime lover of Korean TV Dramas, though, the salad dressing is often the main course for me. As always with really good shows, the supporting characters often outstage the leads. Kwon Hae-Hyo, theater-trained, with a great sense of humour and majestic delivery creates another one of his eccentric yet life-like characters; Lee A-Hyun is quite solid as Sam-Soon's older sister, with a quite progressive view of one night stands and marriage life in general; the vets Na Moon-Hee, Yeo Woon-Gye and Kim Ja-Ok are simply a riot, making many memorable scenes stand out, and then there's little Seo Ji-Hee (a.k.a. the cutest girl even seen in Korean TV Dramas), who shows Korea has a bright future judging by the quality of its child actors.

Of course you have to understand the kind of demographics this show targets, so you'll excuse a few moments of deja vu, a few tropes of the genre inevitably marring some scenes, but I'm very satisfied with this show. It's intelligent, it balances realistic characters with quirky situations, it never lets melodramatic shenanigans stink up the place, and rarely lags. And even better, it's funny in a way other TV Dramas fail to be, because it makes you laugh about things you can relate to. If you've never seen a Korean TV Drama before, I'm pretty sure this will be a good introduction.

THE DVD

Two (Official) DVD Releases exist: The Korean version and YesAsia Entertainment's one.
Korean DVD (the one I have) is full of nice extras (Video Commentaries, TV Specials, NGs, Making Ofs) which will be of little use if you don't speak Korean, and of course it has no English Subtitles on the main feature.
YesAsia Entertainment's version up for release next month has (allegedly) good English Subtitles but no extras.
The masters come from the same source, so Audio and Video should be exactly the same. The choice is yours: you need subs? Go for the US Version. Want some extras and no need for subs? Korean version, as always. But in both cases, do it fast! Those boxsets are selling like hot cakes (pun intended), and it's very likely the R1 Boxset will follow the same fate of its Korean counterpart, going OOS on most stores.

Thumbs up from me. I did have my problems with it, but overall I think I agree with you on all the main points, even if I'm looking at the series from a different perspective ;) . It has its fair share of cliches and stock situations, but they're very well handled, never allowed to detract from the real meat of the narrative (the evolving character interactions and the surprisingly subtle questions) and the cast are almost uniformly engaging - no surprise with Kim Sun-Ah, she can pull this stuff off in her sleep :) but yes, Henney is great; I confess I would never have thought he'd be that good.

Great series - and yes, I would also agree it'd probably be a good introduction to K-drama - plus a great review. Can't speak for anyone else but I'd welcome more of the same.

(I bet YesAsia still don't ship their own products outside the US, though... >_

"(I bet YesAsia still don't ship their own products outside the US, though... >_ "

Huh?! Why do you say this? Of course they do...!!

» Posted by Tim at October 21, 2005 03:27 PM

Huh? Damo, US edition, YA Entertainment; "This product can only be shipped to Central and South American countries". Ditto Dae Jang Geum, ditto Attic Cat, ditto Hotelier... I mean the products they have the rights to, market and distribute themselves, not the stuff they simply sell.

» Posted by Eight Rooks at October 21, 2005 05:52 PM

sshhhht... DVDAsian...

» Posted by x at October 21, 2005 06:11 PM

Yes, but no free shipping/free VAT... ;_;

still, thanks for the heads up; I've ordered from DVDAsian before. Not my first choice, but they seem okay.

» Posted by Eight Rooks at October 21, 2005 06:24 PM

just ask him to take off company stickers, use a personal name and mark the thing down to 20 bucks. Worked for me, quite quick too.

I would imagine someone is getting wholesale from YesAsia, DVDasian can't possibly be the only one. But if you MUST see the show on DVD, there's also the HK Version, which would bring back the big evil 'B' word, but hey... you take your chances. The Korean set is really great, although package could have been smaller, it's fn huge!

» Posted by x at October 21, 2005 07:11 PM

I'd rather pay over the odds than shell out for... that sort of HK product, personally. I'm not going to pretend everything I ever saw was through legitimate means (obviously!), but I don't like to pay people for the privilege of doing so.

I will pick it up at some point. I'm not a huge TV fan - from any country - but there are some things that are just too good to pass up. And I do like Kim Sun-Ah; there aren't that many actresses who could make stuff like She's On Duty and S-Diary worth sitting through. :)

» Posted by Eight Rooks at October 21, 2005 09:26 PM

problem is not people who lurk around places like Soompi, take a look at series on 300k/700k links, and if they like it buy the DVD.

Problem is leeches who NEVER buy the DVDs, and watch something like 30 VODs a week without ever paying a penny. Places like Soompi and D-Addicts are full of those people, which is why fansubbers of any kind fell out of favour with me (not so much because I don't need subs, but because they often subtitle stuff that will be readily available a month after the end of the show on DVD, often with Subs. Which, at the end, fuels the bootleggers in HK who make those horrible DVDs with Video off the same 700k links).

» Posted by x at October 21, 2005 10:28 PM

Damo is readily available to those in the US and Canada.. How do I know? I bought a copy from YesAsia and I live in Canada. I have it in my house right now... And the webpage (link here: http://us.yesasia.com/en/PrdDept.aspx/pid-1003676910/code-k/section-videos/) doesn't mention anything about it only being available to Central and South America.. ?!?

» Posted by Tim at October 22, 2005 02:16 AM

Oh, I have Dae Jang Geum from YesAsia.com too!

» Posted by Tim at October 22, 2005 02:17 AM

Oh hey X - nice review...but whatever happened to that promised review of the Red Shoes DVD??

» Posted by paratize at October 22, 2005 02:21 AM

patience is the virtue of the greats, my friend.

Had a bad 6 weeks, that's I'll I can say. Now everything should be back to normal, so expect some new reviews soon.

And Red Shoes is kind of complicated, because 1) The DVD Version doesn't change that much, making the effort to translate it a little harder unless you do... well, the other thing we planned but couldn't do for a variety of reason. 2) I'm not too hot on the film, either. Not bad, not great, stylish, some great moments, but I looked at the watch quite a few times. 'Voice' is more likely to get a review first.

And Oh... YesAsia ships those Dramas in the America's (continents, that is), but not outside that.

» Posted by x at October 22, 2005 08:23 AM

I have to agree with most of what x has said ... execept that I didn't like Jung Ryeo-Won's performance very much. She was unconvincing and annoyed the heck out of me! I wasn't overly impressed with Hyun Bin either but I really liked Daniel Henney. I also like the nasty "captain" female coworker (forget her name ...) and of course Kim Sun Ah was very good. It was based on a very popular manhwa (which I never read.) Kim Sun Ah's speech pattern seemed kind of odd and I wondered if it was a special affectation for Sam Soon and discovered that it wasn't from viewing her older films. Nope, she always talk like that! Perhaps it because she was raised in Japan.

» Posted by Mirage at October 23, 2005 12:47 AM

Tim, it doesn't say anything about restricted shipping on your link because that's the US YesAsia store. International customers can't order through that one. If you look at the international one -

http://global.yesasia.com/en/PrdDept.aspx/pid-1003676910/code-k/section-videos/

- you should see it over on the right-hand side of the page. Just wanted to clear that up.

I love this movie. It's funny and yeah, realistic. I would say this movie is "plain honest" which is a big contrast to other korean dramas. Plus the couple is great and oozes with chemisty.

"A cup of coffee has 5 kilo calories, which is the same energy used for a 5 min kiss. For the 3 years we kissed, how many calories is that? Love calories, all that energy, where did it all go to?"

It's still Kim Sam-Soon here in the Philippines. Sam Soon's ex-boyfriend's name was renamed to Harvey if I'm not mistaken and Jung Ryeo-Won's character's name is Hannah.

The show was so addicting I ended up buying the DVD set (my first purchase ever since I'm so stingy when it comes to buying such stuff) because I couldn't bear the lengthy commercials.

Good review by the way... especially with what you said about Hyun Bin eluding a certain hard to explain charm.

Am I the only one who didn't like this drama? Everyone's saying how awesome Sam-Soon and Sam-Shik are, and how cute a couple they are ... but all I see is how much a HUGE jerk Sam-shik is, and how incredibly selfish Sam-soon is. Basically Sam-shik kicked Hee-jin to the curb for a loud, selfish, annoying and stubborn woman. And honestly, what's up with Sam-soon? Is she that desperate? She sure didn't like it when her ex cheated on her. In the end, they were both pathetic. Possibly the most pathetic couple I've ever seen in a K-drama. And good luck keeping their relationship going, considering how nasty and equally stubborn they both are.
Sam-shik and Sam-soon deserve each other. They're both selfish, stubborn, and .. well, that's about it. Hee-jin got the better guy in the end, anyway. Still, this is definately one of the worst dramas I've seen.

I would like to comemnt on Tae-Hwa's feelings about Jin-Heon kicking Hee Jin out to the curb, after he fell in love with Sam Soon. I agree it was not exactly the best thing to do.....especially if you have promised to wait for someone no matter what happens. However, a human being needs love, and if you get really lonely when your lover ignores you, the loneliness can eventually turn to anger and then to hate. It's a very long process and you begin to resent that your lover takes you for granted and soon you lose the love you once had. I am talking from very realistic experience. It's not great, it's not fair, but it happens. You don't stop loving your old lover, but you don't love them like you used to because you are so afraid that you will get hurt again.

i didn't appreciate this drama the first time i saw it. there were just too many cultural references and jokes that don't really appeal to many non-koreans (eg. what's so funny about sam soon's name? and why does she call sam shik "sam shik"?). that's why when i heard that GMA is showing this on local tv, i was curious as to how they would make it suitable for the filipino audience. so i'm watching it again, in tagalog. and this time around, it's better. it's funnier and more entertaining. and the dubbing is at least decent. pagbigyan niyo na, given that GMA is notoriously bad at dubbing imported tv shows. did anyone watch their tagalog dubbed version of all in? it was so HORRIBLE i decided to stop being so cheap and just buy the DVD set. however, the job they did with kim sam soon is pretty good. i noticed though that they had to discard some material that wouldn't make sense in a non-korean cultural context and replaced it with something that approximates its counterpart in filipino culture. and it works, obviously. kudos to GMA for that.

what i don't like about the tagalog version: 1. it's as if they show 3 minutes of commercials for every 2 minutes of kim sam soon. 2. the theme song by JOLINA MAGDANGAL. when will this woman realize that she's such a mediocre singer it's not even funny.

I love "My Lovely Kim Sam-Soon drama series...very funny love story. I watch over and over.. Kim Sam-Soon is a great actress..and Jin-Heon is a good actor and sooo charming..I really like the ending part because they ended up together or nobody died..I've seen some Korean drama series that I didn't like the ending part..for example the Stairway to Heaven, Something Happened in Bali..I mean it was a good show but the ending is just too sad..I always like the ending is a happy....not a sad. That's why My Lovely Kim Sam-Soon is the best love story..

» Posted by glocel at April 26, 2006 04:01 AM

When this drama was shown on local TV, i did not pay any attention and find it unconvincing when it is published as the highest rating show in 2005.

After satisfying my curiosity, i am speechless! The storylines, the scenes, the suspense, the actors & actresses, the chemistry, the songs .. they creates such a beautiful touchable memorable moment. "Syabas" to the all parties take part in producing such a wonderful drama. It is truly amazing and it rank TOP in my favourite list.

» Posted by Fung Kin at August 21, 2006 01:14 PM

I think this show is really touching, interesting & funny! I wonder where they get their ideas from? Or they experience themselves? The characters like Sam soon, in real life she's a model and she dared to take this challenge of adding her weight up to nine kg specially 4 this show. Most importantly, she act really well in this show with that man called...mm..whatever! Good luck hope that they will produe anther MY LOVELY SAM SOON 2

» Posted by Yumi at August 26, 2006 10:18 AM

The lead(man, forgot his name, so I just called him Mr A)and Sam soon act reallyx10000000 well in the show. I love the first espisode when she found out her byfd betrayed her when she followed him to a hotel. She was so sad that she accidentally went to the gents and change her clothe while she cried. When Mr A knocked afew time on the door, finally she came out with sore eyes and without buttoning her clothe properly and Mr A said," u a pervert ah?!And please don't breastfeeding in the gents."
