Dissolution
By: Bryant and Kevin Robinson

Dissolution is a seven-map (Map01-Map07) mini-episode for Doom 2 that's meant as a side-story to their previous release 'Project Slipgate'. This wad puts you and your stylish Doom 64 weapons against six brownish-grey gothic stone castles worth of baddies (first map is an intro). The maps look so nice you can smell them and as I explored couldn't help, but think about where I'd be putting all my furniture if I were to move into one of them (I also noticed some spots that would need wallpapering to cover up those nagging texture misalignments). The textures chosen in each map all work together nicely... the ambient sounds also take the atmosphere to a whole new level. Dissolution is undoubtedly a great-looking episode, where it fails is in the extremely linear map design. The game play feels very 'go here and do that', even for Doom. You'll also have to do quite a bit of backtracking through hallways you've already cleared to get to x door that y switch or z key opened. These little game play faults however I don't think took away from the overall experience and I'd wager that Dissolution is worth the download. Requires ZDoom.

Dark7: Mission Pack (The Special Edition)
By: Bryant Robinson
Screenshot 1 | Screenshot 2 | Screenshot 3 | Screenshot 4 | Screenshot 5

Another hot and spicy piece of ZDoom action courtesy of Bryant Robinson. More a sequel than a Mission Pack, but I guess it avoids the possibility that some people might download it expecting 72 levels... This level set is basically what Doom II was to Doom. Pretty much the same, just with a few extra bells and whistles. The textures are great and the levels are of the same standard as the previous release - smooth construction, sensible layouts and great attention to detail. Ambient sounds are used with skill to enhance the atmosphere beautifully. Other ZDoom features such slopes are also used well, complimenting rather than overwhelming the levels, again following the standard set by it's predecessor. The new soundtrack is an excellent set of MOD tracks which lend a bit of a Quake II feel to the proceedings. The sky utilises ZDoom's excellent skybox feature with fast rolling clouds moving past the mountains from Knee Deep in the Dead. The first level is a short introductory story which, loosely summarised, means "You kill monsters now". The other levels start with a short mission briefing giving you your primary objective. Gameplay is excellent with a steady difficulty progression and excellent item and enemy balance. So basically, it's all good. If you liked the original Dark7, then this is the WAD for you.

Dark7 (The Special Edition)
By: Bryant Robinson

Dude... duuuuuude. Dark 7 is a seven-map mini-episode replacing Doom 2 Map01-Map07, and it easily wins a place among my favorite wads. Taking place in an overtaken arctic base, Dark 7 forces you to complete a series of 'mission objectives'. Don't worry about it being too complicated or un-doomish however, completing most the objectives isn't any more complex than finding and flipping a switch. The level design is consistent throughout the episode and there's an almost Half-Lifeish atmosphere to most of the maps. The health balance is perfect, and while there's quite a bit more ammo than you'll probably need, the battles are so intense and challenging that it shouldn't bother you. The Zdoom features and scripting are used excellently and add a lot to the gameplay rather than just existing for the sake of eyecandy. Sounds from Doom 64 and Unreal are used, the texure/graphic replacements are from the Darkening and nightmare1, and there's a great new soundtrack that covers both music and background noices/voices. Aside from the rather cheesy and disappointing last map, Dark 7 is a winner in every aspect. Requires Zdoom.

Project Slipgate: (The Special Edition)
By: Bryant and Kevin Robinson
Screenshot 1 | Screenshot 2 | Screenshot 3 | Screenshot 4

Hey, remember Dark 7 and the Dark 7 mission pack? From the exact same mapper(s) that brought you those delightful wads comes Project Slipgate, a tasty 11 new ZDoom maps that are very true to... uh, Quake. As a matter of fact, almost all the sounds, textures and graphics come from Quake, and the authors recommend playing this wad in ZDoomGL with the ZDGL MD2 pack to give your weapons and enemies that low-quality poorly-animated zing that the Quake models had. Hey! Don't be too afraid. Just cause it looks like Quake doesn't mean it's lost all elements of that classic Doom gameplay you all know and love... it just eh, added a few new elements in. In any event, I would hope nobody would pass this up because you need a jump key, these maps are balanced, fast paced, challenging, and save a few gross texture misalignments, some of them look damn good. Worth looking into, requires ZDoom.

Quake2Doom is a single coop player map that originally started back in the summer of 2000 as a 9 map quake2ish themed project. Though it failed to really capture the quake2 design. Now after 4 years, the project is now redone and utilizing the advance capabilities of the Vavoom source port. The features include: sloped sectors, quake2 style static lighting, 3d room over room, polydoors and a custom tga sky box.
