I Bet Michael Caine Will Mentor Him
Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes, who has figured in more movies than any other fictional character, is going to be re-invented as an action-adventure hero, Variety reports today. The as-yet-uncast Warner Bros. film, to be directed by the talented Brit director Neil Marshall ("The Descent'') will be recast in the mold of "Batman Begins,'' focusing on Holmes' skills as a bare-knuckle boxer and expert swordsman. Basil Rathbone, the movies' best-known Sherlock, was also Hollywood's premiere swordsman of the '30s and '40s, but to the best of my knowledge didn't pick up a saber in any of his 14 Holmes adventures.Speaking of action adventures, the Hollywood Reporter has pierced the veil of secrecy surrounding the fourth Indiana Jones film sufficiently to report that Cate Blanchett has landed some sort of starring role opposite Harrison Ford. Still no word on whether Karen Allen, who told us she was sounded out about an appearance years ago, will reprise her role from "Raiders of the Lost Ark.'' Sigh.
