'Darjeeling' Bows in Venice

"Obviously he has been through a lot this week," said Wes Anderson of frequent collaborator Owen Wilson at the world premiere of "The Darjeeling Limited'' tonight in Venice. "But I can tell you that's he doing very well and making us laugh, and when he's ready he's going to speak for himself much better than any of us could.'' Describing the movie in a polite but unenthusiastic terms, Richard Corliss of Time writes of Owen's bandaged character in the film: "He looks a mess — funny, in the context of the film; not so, given Wilson's hospitalization a week ago for what was described as a slashed-wrist suicide attempt. The actor was released Saturday and is in his Santa Monica home, People.com reported, under 24-hour watch by friends and family, instead of on the red carpet in Venice.'' One of few major Venice titles to skip the Toronto Film Festival, it will open the New York Film Festival on Sept. 28 and bow in limited release the next day. It's unclear at this point whether Owen will be up to promotional duties by that point. If Variety reviewer Alissa Simon's assessment of the film's commercial prospects is correct, it could probably use the help. "Breaking no new ground thematically, pic comes closer to 'The Royal Tenenbaums' than 'The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou,' but without achieving the poignance of 'Rushmore,' '' Simon writes. "Inventively staged pic should satisfy the upscale, youth and cult auds Anderson has developed, though it's unlikely to draw significantly better than his earlier work."
