Oscar Watch: Cate's Great, But There's No 'There' There
The initimable Kyle Smith gives three stars to Todd Haynes' "I'm Not There,'' an artsy-fartsy, punishingly overlong and self-satisfied deconstruction of Bob Dylan's multiple personas that has bewitched some of our critical brethren. Kyle's assessment is saner, though I have to disagree with his position that Cate Blanchett is Oscar-mongering as by far the most interesting of the Dylans (A dazed-looking Richard Gere is by far the worst). It seems to me that Cate has always given 150 percent on even the most dubious projects, like "Veronica Guerin,'' her ill-advised collaboration with Joel Schmacher and Jerry Bruckheimer. Whether it's by design or not, it doesn't look like Harvey Weinstein will have to make good on his promise to kill himself if Cate isn't nominated. She's by far the leading candidate for Best Supporting Actress at both Gurus O'Gold and the Buzzmeter, both of which I contribute to.
