Box Office: A Glut of Choices

The second half of what amounts to a six-day holiday weekend -- concluding tomorrow, the day after Christmas, traditionally one of the biggest moviegoing days of the year -- continues with the introduction of three more new wide releases added to the five introduced on Friday. There's gonna be blood shed here, folks. Opening at 1,164 location is the Oprah produced, Denzel directed and MGM-Weinsteins distributed awards hopeful "The Great Debaters,'' a well-meaning inspirational film that rates 74 percent fresh at Rotten Tomatoes and gets a miserly 2.5 stars from yours truly. Kyle Smith gives the kids' fantasy: "The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep,'' bowing at 2,772 venues, a thumbs-sideways with two stars and it charts 57 percent positive at RT. The third wide release, "Aliens vs. Predators: Requieum,'' aka "Requieum For a Scream'' at 2,563 caves, was not screened for traditional critics (see entry below). In limited release, Rob Reiner's "The Bucket List'' starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman as cute terminal cancer patients, not my cup of tea, charts a rotten 47 percent at RT and gets 3.5 stars from Kyle. Also reviewed today is the sublime animated "Persepolis,'' earning a 97 percent rating at RT and 3 stars from the venerable Vincent A. Musetto. There are three more major limited openings this week, "There Will Be Blood'' tomorrow and, on Friday, "The Orphanage'' and "Honeydrippers.''
