Oscar Watch: 'Sweeney' Cuts Up

rickmannnnn.jpg
My very esteemed colleague Kyle Smith sheathes his critical razor today, unleashing a 3.5 star rave for "Sweeney Todd.'' Kyle also performs a video duet with our legendary theater editor Barbara Hoffman, who rates four stars in my book! It's looking likelier that "Sweeney'' may make the cut for a Best Picture nomination, but out of all the prognosticators at Gurus O'Gold and the Buzzmeter, only the latter's Tom O'Neil -- a hard-core musical theater buff -- is predicting a victory for Tim Burton and company (like he did for, ahem, "Dreamgirls'' last year). Methinks that when completing the final ballot, the academy will be put off by all the blood, whether it's the geyers in "Sweeney'' or the ample quantities on display in "No Country for Old Men'' or, for that matter, "There Will Be Blood.'' I'm still predicting a win for "Atonement,'' though it seems to me that "Juno'' could actually pull off that surprise win that so many were predicting for the overrated "Little Miss Sunshine.'' Speaking of which, my esteemed colleague Reed Tucker thinks it was a huge mistake for "Juno'' screenwriter Diablo Cody to accept a columnist gig with Entertainment Weekly. I love Diablo and the movie, but Reed's right -- this former stripper is already, you should pardon the expression, way too over-exposed. She needs to cool it for a while and let her work speak for itself.
