Box Office Preview: Anakin's One-Week Wonder
Thursday is the new Friday, at least for this week, since for the first time Hollywood is opening four wide releases on Valentine's Day to create an ad hoc five-day weekend that will end with President's Day on Monday. It's far from my idea of a date movie, but Gitesh Pandya of is predicting a five-day take of $30 million for "Jumper,'' the latest seemingly critic-proof lowbrow offering from 20th Century Fox. I give this incoherent $85 million sci-fi starring Hayden Christensen, who replaced another actor during production, one star in my review today (it rates a rotten 18 percent at Rotten Tomatoes, which, like Fox and The Post, is part of the News Corp. empire). The No. 2 spot is expected to go to Paramount's latest pricy attempt at a fantasy franchise, "The Spiderwick Chronicles,'' which Kyle awards two stars (79 percent positive at RT) and Gitesh tabs for around $27 million by Monday night. Disney's sequel "Step Up 2 the Streets'' (also two stars from the red-haired devil and 38 percent at RT) will be fighting for third place with holdover "Fool's Gold,'' while "Definitely Maybe,'' Universal's attempt to sell Ryan Reynolds as a romantic leading man rates (2 stars from your truly and 78 percent positive at RT) is expected to limp into sixth place with a predicted $10 million, behind another preemptive Valentine's Day release, "Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins.''Posted by Lou Lumenick on February 14, 2008 01:37 PM
