    The Brigade:
Wherever David Thompson traveled, so did the voyageurs engaged by him. Just as the voyageurs were the backbone of the fur trade, the voyageurs under Thompson, in many respects, were the backbone of his explorations. For over 200 years, the use of the canoe from the beginning of the fur trade era until near it’s end was a vital part of the transportation network of goods and fur and also provided a mode of transportation for David Thompson in many of his explorations. Following his crossing of Howse Pass in June of 1807, David Thompson began his return trip in the spring of 1808 to report his findings to the Partners of the North West Company.
***This 2008 bicentennial commemoration event is an opportunity to bring to the forefront a way of life that no longer exists and in turn, help commemorate David Thompson, the greatest land geographer of his time...
Imagine a 25 foot voyageur canoe trip from headwaters of the North Saskatchewan....Arriving in Prince Albert morning of May 24; and like Aboriginal Peoples and Map Maker Explorers like David Thompson did in History, they will 'rest' here a few days and Celebrate with the City and District *** Events are being planned and ALL are invited to participate: * Be a Spectator at events * Participate by joining the Brigade for the entire summer, a weekend, or a Day ***We invite All to get boats out on the water (Sail, Canoe, Kayak) and join the Brigade as more than 160 canoeist arrive...the rowing club and many area boaters are intending to participate...this will be a spectacle and a Celebration of the great history of our River....
