What is the UA Scholars Award?
What is the UA Scholars Award? The UA Scholars Award is an $11,000 scholarship to use at the University of Alaska. It is awarded to the top 10 percent of the graduating seniors from Alaska high schools. Scholars are chosen by the high schools they are attending at the end of their junior year.
Is the UA Scholars Award a full-ride scholarship? The Award goes a long way toward the cost of an education at the University of Alaska; however, it is not a full-ride scholarship. Each semester you attend UA, you receive $1,375 to help cover your educational expenses.
How will I know if I qualify for the UA Scholars Award? Each eligible high school provides the UA Scholars Program with the names and addresses of the students designated for the award and we notify them through the mail. Return to top of page
What if I think I qualify but have not been notified? If you think you should be a recipient of the Scholars Award but have not received an award letter, you should contact an administrator at your school.
How do the high schools decide who is a Scholar? High schools set their own criteria to determine the top 10 percent of their students. Typically, cumulative GPA is the primary consideration. Schools may consider additional relevant academic factors; however, a student's financial need or intention to enroll or not to enroll at the University of Alaska may not be used as criteria for the award.
What if I am not going to a standard high school? In order to qualify for the program, you must be attending a high school that is located in Alaska and accredited by Northwest Association of Accredited Schools, or is a public school, or is a private school properly registered with the state of Alaska Department of Education. How much is my Award? A UA Scholars Award is a four-year, $11,000 scholarship to the University of Alaska. Recipients will receive $1,375 per semester for eight semesters as long as they maintain eligibility. The UA Scholars Award is not tied to the cost of tuition.
What can I use the Award for? You can use the Award to pay for undergraduate tuition, fees, room, board, books, transportation and other expenses associated with attending the University of Alaska. Return to top of page
What if I complete my degree before I've used up my scholarship? As long as you maintain eligibility, you may continue using your award after you graduate. However, it can only be applied to an undergraduate degree program. You may not receive more than $1,375 from your Award in one semester. Return to top of page
Can I take a semester off after I've started attending the University? You can take up to two, regular, consecutive, semesters off after you've begun attending the University and still receive your UA Scholars Award. If you are gone for three or more consecutive semesters your award will expire.
When does my Award expire? Your Award expires after you've used it for eight semesters or six years after the first semester you used it or after you didn't use it for three or more consecutive semesters.
Can I use the Award at any UA campus? Yes, and you may transfer between any campus of the University of Alaska while using your UA Scholars Award so long as you maintain academic eligibility. Return to top of page
How does the campus know I have a Scholars Award? If you are eligible for the Scholars Award we will send you notification and a Reservation Form. After we receive your completed form, we will update your student file at the University with your Award information.
Do I have to do anything besides fill out the reservation form? Yes, you must apply for admission at the campus of your choice and be accepted in a certificate or degree program. Contact a campus admissions office for enrollment information. Return to top of page
Do I have to have a high school diploma before I can use my Award? Yes, you must graduate with a diploma. If you receive a certificate of achievement or a GED, you will not be eligible to use your Award.
How do I stay eligible for the Award? To stay eligible you must: be a full-time student making satisfactory progress in your degree or certificate program, be in good financial standing and meet the campus' student conduct standards. Also, the award will be forfeited if it is not used for three or more consecutive semesters.
What if I have other funds? If you have funding from the UA College Savings Plan (or another college savings program), additional scholarship(s) or financial aid, you may be reimbursed for overpayment, if you've met your obligations to the University for the semester. Return to top of page
What if I don't intend to use my Award? You do not have to make that decision right away; you have a 16-month period in which to claim your award. We encourage you to return your Reservation Form so that your award is ready to use if you change your mind. If you don't use your Award within 16 months from the date of your high school graduation, it expires.
What if I do not qualify for a Scholars Award or need additional financial assistance? There are many sources of funds for your education including other scholarships, work-study programs, grants and loans. Contact a financial aid office at the University of Alaska to find out what is available. The UA Foundation offers a variety of scholarships, grants and awards available to UA students.
