NEW RELEASE: Mariah Carey "Touch My Body"

MariahMariah and Jack This luxuriously high-end clip starts out like the biggest budget porn movie ever – with the computer geek coming to a hillside mansion for a tech call. When the lady of the house opens the door while barely wrapped in lingerie and a filmy robe, one might expect Mary Carey rather that Mariah Carey – but then the singing starts and there is no mistaking that Mimi is the star of this production. Brett Ratner gets a suitably comedic performance from 30 Rock scene-stealer Jack McBrayer as things get way less porny and more like an ultra-glossy episode of Beauty and the Geek – the asexual nerd-tacular fun include unicorns, Frisbees and a wicked game of Guitar Hero. Isn’t that what everyone wants to do with Mariah Carey (review by Doug Stern) --> watch "Touch My Body" via MTV.com

JonasBros Director Robert Hales basically follows the foolproof blueprint of "Home Sweet Home" and "Wanted Dead Or Alive" and delivers a classy and massive b&w recount of the Jonas Brothers on the road. screaming fans, the arenas, the Jesus Christ poses, long bus rides, vocals warm-ups in the bathroom, group prayers and seeing millions of faces, rocking em all, etc, etc, you know the drill. It's a scary, yet entirely wholesome scene and representative of probably the only lucrative market right now in the music world. NEW RELEASE: The White Stripes "Conquest"

HunterHunted There's nothing like the rallying cry of the Spanish matador and his quest for glory and adventure. The White Stripes — who are no less than modern-day troubadours themselves — play the roles of matador and sword servant, but instead of highlighting the romance as Madonna did in"Take A Bow," they go for an off-beat humor that befits them well. The video ends gloriously indeed, but the actual bullfight owes more to the slapstick of Charlie Chaplin or Bugs Bunny than it does to the machismo of Russell Crowe. NEW RELEASE: Alicia Keys "Like You'll Never See Me Again"

CommonAlicia Mama always said you should never leave the house angry because you never know when your lover is gonna get mauled in a motorcycle accident. Alicia Keys probably wishes she had made peace with her man — played by Common, a rapper so suave he even looks cool when covered in blood and on life support — in this reverse chronological clip for "Like You'll Never See Me Again." The action starts with Common's life in the balance and then rewinds to show how he and  Ms. Keys were on the outs, yet still in love. The source of the breakup and the smash-up are both left to the viewer's imagination, but the emotions are pretty easy to discern through all the surrounding exposition scenes. PS: No word on whether Common was wearing clean underwear. mama always warned me about that too. --> watch "Like You'll Never See Me Again"

NEW RELEASE: Mark Ronson "Valerie"

Mronson_vernoica Is guest singer Amy Winehouse's absence from this video a purposeful creative decision or the result of her unavailability due to rehab or worse (yes, yes, yes)? Who cares. The point is she's not in the video and — even though I find the notorious Ms. Winehouse truly compelling — I don't necessarily think that's a bad thing. Mark Ronson is one of those behind the scenes dudes who certainly deserves the spotlight and let's face it: There's no way to compete with Amy Winehouse and her gravity-defying beehive hairdo and overwhelming cult of personality. Ronson appears comfortable and cool on stage at what appears to be a posh, yet off-the-cuff performance when he realizes that his guest singer is not there to take the mic. So, he remains calm and pulls some girls — who all looks like pedestrian versions of Winehouse — from the audience to sing "Valerie" en masse. Whether any of these ladies will have a career path like the one that Courtney Cox enjoyed after her dark dancing with The Boss remains to be seen, but I think Mark Ronson will certainly continue to do just fine. --> watch "Veronica"

NEW RELEASE: Alicia Keys "No One"

AliciaKeys At Mexican restaurants you can usually get a condiment caddy that comes on a rotating lazy-susan with four different sections – one red salsa, one green, sour cream and guacamole. The latest video for Alicia Keys "No One" is just like that, except that the side-dish Zoetrope is the inner-mechanism of a musicbox that spins between various performance set-ups and styling looks rather than delicious chip accouterments.
Director Justin Francis, most often associated with Saline Project, lets Ms Keys look four kinds of beautiful while the four way division also allows the video to show off four different kinds of product placement watches. The video ends with a block party in an alley with rain coming down and an upbeat, celebratory feel that matches the energy of the track. Also, getting Alicia wet actually gives the video a fifth hairstyle. Yahtzee! (review by Doug Stern)--> watch "No One" via YouTube and SonyBMG Musicbox

NEW RELEASE: Wyclef Jean "Sweetest Girl"

Wyclef Having a clique/label named Refugee Camp uniquely qualifies Wyclef Jean to solve any/all of the world's immigration problems, but the goal here is a bit more personal: 'Clef wants to make sure "The Sweetest Girl" gets into the country. Despite that stated concern the former Fugee spends most of the video performing this tune on his acoustic and collaborating with Akon and Lil' Wayne inside a refugee camp. Thankfully, the Sweetest Girl ain't so sweet and decides to take matters into her own hands by launching a molotov cocktail and starting a full scale riot among her fellow detainees. The eventual outcome is left TBD as an ending title promises that these "memoirs of an immigrant [are] to be continued."

In Wyclef We Trust     While you wait, however, you should also check the viral video for a totally different vibe. Although the official video is a deadly serious opus with feature film aspirations, this director-uncredited "viral" is way more light-hearted —  nothing more than a constant stream of consciousness visual riffs on the lyrics — and will probably leave you smiling and humming the melody instead of thinking about what you (or Wyclef, or Sally Struthers) can do to save the world.  --> watch "The Sweetest Girl" (or watch "The Sweetest Girl" viral)

NEW RELEASE: Nicole Scherzinger "Whatever U Like"

Nicolesscher_what1Nicolesscher_what3Nicolesscher_what2 Lead Doll Nicole Scherzinger borrows a few pages from the Justin Timberlake post-N'Sync playbook in launching her solo career with "Whatever U Like." The sound is a touch more complex and challenging than the saccharine pop proferred by Nicole and her fellow Pussycat Dolls. The video's look is dark and, while I don't know if classy is quite the right word, it's certainly more austere, striking and downright artistic than you might expect. After all, one of the possible inspirations I noted after first viewing was Richard Serra — whereas the only other sculptor I ever associated with previous clips is Sal Calabro. So, as you can see, Ms. Scherzinger is an easy target which makes this video all the more impressive. It's pretty striking, to say the least, and does a perfect job in setting a tone that's distinct from the PCD personae. She's still sexy, but it's different. She actually looks turned on, as opposed to vamping to make you think she's turned on. Maybe it's the newfound freedom — though the lyrics make it clear she's perfectly happy in a submissive mode to her man — maybe it's guest stars Sean Garrett and T.I., or maybe it's director Paul Hunter. Whatever it is, it seems to be working. --> watch "Whatever U Want" in Quicktime or via YouTube

NEW RELEASE: Common f/ Lily Allen "Drivin' Me Wild"

CommonLilynaut This video is at times a sunny, but snarkily dismissive story where Common tells wannabe players of both sexes that their games are not quite up to snuff, but it's the blingtacular performance moments that truly stand out. Common kicks back in the Roller wearing the most formal outfit ever seen in a rap video and chills with Jeremy Piven, who seems just a bit lost without Lloyd by his side. The hip performances are given a graphic "end of the world" vibe featuring Vanilla Sky empty streets, Lily Allen with a gas mask and Banksy tank posters. Director Chris Robinson adds in plenty of stylized eye candy – down to Lily as the cross-country Astronaut and Common walking the streets in his tux as the Maitre d’ of the Apocalypse. NEW RELEASE: White Stripes "You Don't Know What Love Is"

White Stripes So what is rock n' roll in the 21st Century? Judging by the White Stripes, it's the same as it's always been and still made by and for the common people. Damn if they didn't prove their point with a recent tour of every Canadian province and territory, including Nunavut, population 29,474, where they shot a video as part of a tour documentary that is in the works. The simple performance clip for "You Don't Know What Love Is (You Just Do As You're Told)" is set in what's essentially the middle of nowhere, and pictures our generation's King and Queen of Garage Rock outside a red and white-painted beach house and walking through one of the most remote graveyards. Although Jack White sings about love to his rhythm section/ex-wife/fake sister here, it may not be the scathing statement it seems, but rather an assurance that even in the Internet Age, where we think we know everything, we still have no idea. NEW RELEASE: Babyshambles "Delivery"

Babyshambles The ironic part of the Pete Doherty story to me is that probably only 1% or so of the people who follow his every transgression and fuck-up on Perezhilton.com have heard his music, let alone heard of The Libertines, which could have/should have been the biggest band out of the UK since Manfred Mann (What, were you expecting me to namecheck The Clash or Oasis?). So, it's nice to see the D-Man release something with his new group Babyshambles, even if it's a casual effort in terms of the song and video. "Delivery" is  simple garage rock rave-up, matched with a b&w video that essentially consists of Doherty and crew walking and driving around the streets of London. Added bonus: Video director Douglas Hart was the original bassist for The Jesus & Mary Chain. Cool, right? --> watch "Delivery" below via YouTube

NEW RELEASE: Justin Timberlake "LoveStoned..."

JTJT How many hours of your life have you spent idly staring at Windows Media Player's audio visualizers? If you're like me, you spend lots of time at work toggling between the various Plenoptic settings. As it turns out, Justin Timberlake is a big Bars and Waves fan. [editor's note: Video Static is a Mac snob and feels obligated to state that he wastes his time flipping about in the iTunes Cover Flow interface and writing in the third person] For "LoveStoned/I Think She Knows Interlude," director Robert Hales drops JT inside a space-filled scene of animated visualizations and EQs that shimmer and spark around his GQ styling. As the song segues into its interlude, Hales flies us through 2001: A Space Odyssey and into a white version of Tron. There we find Justin surrounded by a futuristic electrical environment, which is when I start to wonder if he's going to turn into a polar bear. NEW RELEASE: Bonde De Role "Solta O Frango"

chickenegg Bonde do Role is in danger of being completely overlooked by the indie rock jetset, who are too busy being distracted by M.I.A.'s musical internationalism. No mind! The Brazilian baile funk group is already getting some airtime on MTV, and hopefully this clip will usher in a wave of loose, sexy vibes to America's clubs. "Solta O Frango," which means something like "Untie the Chicken," is set in an alley of one of Rio de Janeiro's favelas and features a staged cockfight between two costumed men being egged on by singer/referee Marina Vello. While we have seen a lot of this before — favelas and chickens — Bonde do Role and director Barney Clay have made what may be the first baile funk video to get international attention. And beyond that, it's good fun! Drop your cynicism and enjoy. (review by Kevin Holy) --> watch "Solta O Frango"

NEW RELEASE: R. Kelly & Usher "Same Girl"

Night Shyamalan spinning in his... Well, not really. You will no doubt see the "surprise" coming a mile away, but it's almost charming to see Kells and Usher go through all that trouble just because they may be paddling the same canoe. (You know R. Kelly doesn't like the freaky stuff!) The story is satisfying fun, however, and Little X gets larger than life coverage of the twin superstars. Overall, it works great, even if some player haters out there get the feeling that Usher and Kells are just doing this to preserve their firemen's pensions. NEW RELEASE: Green Day "Working Class Hero"

Darfur Many lives may have been saved by rock 'n' roll, but no music video has ever saved the world. Go back to one of the first charity videos — USA For Africa's "We Are The World" — and you'll be reminded of celebrity, rather  than the actual issue at hand. This b&w video — off the John Lennon tribute album Instant Karma, which benefits the Amnesty International campaign to raise awareness about the genocide in Darfur, Sudan and increase pressure on the international community to intervene — sidesteps that problem nicely: Green Day are seen performing in a rehearsal studio, effectively taking a backseat to the people actually affected by the grave humanitarian crisis in Darfur. Director Samuel Bayer utilizes gorgeous portraiture shots and interview segments to let these Sudanese refugees share their harrowing stories and bare their emotional, if not scars. If the video leaves you feeling a bit powerless, maybe that's the point. "Working Class Hero" is a masterpiece of ambivalence, after all, full of much more invective rhetoric and despair about the system than actual praise for those common folks trying to change it. NEW RELEASE: Editors "Smokers Outside The Hospital Door"

Editors_smokers Is she crazy, or is she Jesus? That is the question you may be left with after watching this curious little video for the even more curiously titled Editors track "Smokers Outside The Hospital Door." Icelandic directing duo Arni & Kinski deliver a story of a girl on the run from a mysterious institution. She makes her way to the river and — in order to elude her final pursuer — skips across the water like a stone, or Jesus, or Peter Sellers in Being There. Take your pick. The video was shot on-location in Prague and the running on water gag required a 24 hours Flame job on behalf of Absolute Post Production VFX artist Ben Robards when it was decided that she originally looked like she was running in merely shallow water. Also of note is that Editors have seemingly discarded the gloomy Interpolesque leanings of their debut album in favor of a grander, more emotional style a la Coldplay or Snow Patrol. --> watch "Smokers Outside The Hospital Door" in Quicktime or Flash

NEW RELEASE: White Stripes "Icky Thump"

Whitestripes_icky Here's a theory: This new White Stripes video is a giant middle finger to CNN's anti-immigrant pundit Lou Dobbs. Co-directed by White Stripes frontman Jack White and The Malloys — who are newly signed to HSI Productions — "Icky Thump" is a faithful telling of White's lyrical story of a bizarre and borderline dangerous journey through Mexico. Things get a little political with some commentary that calls out the hypocrisy of most opposed to immigration reform. That said, have no fear: The song is built upon a mighty riff that I dare say betters, or at least equals Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song," while the video makes a humorous wink and a nod with subtitles that feature a loose Spanish translation of the lyrics. --> watch "Icky Thump" via AOL First View

Set up like a mock trailer for a movie along the lines of Girl Next Door — whose star, Elisha Cuthbert has a cameo here — the video shows the kids transformation from dud to stud, thanks to Ms. Hilton's willingness to be his arm candy at school. -- watch "Nothing In This World" in Quicktime or Windows Media

NEW RELEASE: Janet Jackson "So Excited"

After causing a stir with her ornamented nipple at that infamous Super Bowl halftime show, you might think Janet Jackson would remain carefully and fully clothed in her future videos. Wrong. Ms. Jackson is officially back at her titillating game with a video that teases the viewer with split-second reveals that expose a whole lot of flesh. Things are then taken to the next level by using an X-Ray effect to showcase the skeletal underpinnings to Janet, her co-stars and several objects, including a car. Visual effects house X1FX  engineered approximately 120 effects for  the video, including the aforementioned disappearing clothes gag which called for the creation of lifelike virtual clothing and a soft wipe to undress and then redress the singer. -- watch "So Excited"

NEW RELEASE: My Chemical Romance "...The Black Parade"

My Chemical Romance A sick young man in a hospital bed slips into an afterlife where My Chemical Romance is the star attraction for a funerary parade through a devastated world. In some ways the video may strike you as a commentary on Hurricane Katrina — the destroyed city, a parade that's at least partly inspired by the city's famed jazz funerals, the protest sign that reads "Starved To Death in a Land Of Plenty" — but it's just as easy to view it as a goth version of Mexico's Day Of The Dead parades. Either way, it's pretty much a no-brainer that the band's dedicated fanbase will herald this as an anthem of solidarity. -- watch "Welcome To The Black Parade"

IN DEPTH: Muse "Knights Of Cydonia"

Muse Director Joseph Kahn shares some thoughts on his epic music video "Knights Of Cydonia" for the English band Muse. Kahn takes the classic template of the Spaghetti Western and laces it with humor, kung fu and lots of sci-fi elements to create a video that's every bit as creative and wonderfully absurd as this operatic rock tune.

I am a Korean American who happened to have grown up Houston, TX, during the heyday of the great 1980's sci-fi movies. Aside from the Star Wars and the Blade Runners, there was the endless rotation of those lost HBO gems: Beastmaster, Spacehunter, The Sword And The Sorcerer, the list goes on. "Futuristic Cowboys" was the spec I got when they sent me the track, and frankly, I may have been the only director who actually decided to write a futuristic cowboy music video. Laser pistols and cowboys make sense to me like kim chee and hamburgers.Muse

Honestly, it's hard to mess up a video when the band is this good and on their A game. It all begins with three English guys deciding to write a six minute rock record and release it in America as their first single. I couldn't find a robot with a metallic jock strap big enough to hold those balls. Anyway, that's the real magic here — nothing we do as directors matches the risk-taking a great band does, and Muse is one hell of a band.

NEW RELEASE: Gnarls Barkley "Smiley Faces"

Gnarls Barkley Gnarls Barkley
"Smiley Faces"
(Downtown/Atlantic)

Robert Hales, director | Coleen Haynes, producer | HSI, production co | Damian Acevedo, DP | Ken Mowe, editor | Mike Hersey, art director | Description: Woody Allen's masterful 1983 film Zelig told the story of human chameleon Leonard Zelig, a man who was present at nearly every important event of the '20s and '30s. Using archival footage and very clever editing, Zelig — played by Allen himself — is seamlessly blended into various real events with some of the most famous and notorious figures of that era. The latest iteration of this concept is the new "Smiley Faces" video for the similarly chameleonic act Gnarls Barkley. Director Robert Hales inserts the duo into footage of such important musical movements and moments as the hot jazz era of the '30s, a Yellow Submarine cartoon knock-off, the infamous Rolling Stones concert at Altamont, the early days of rap, Michael Jackson's "Thriller" and David Bowie's "Let's Dance" videos, and performances with Bob Marley, The Velvet Underground and The Clash. Adding further credence and a PBS documentary feel to the video are some interview segments with bogus music know-it-alls played by actors Dennis Hopper and Dean Stockwell. -- watch "Smiley Faces" in Windows Media

NEW RELEASE: Jessica Simpson "A Public Affair"

"A Public Affair" (Epic)

Brett Ratner, director | Ron Mohrhoff, producer | HSI, production co | Robert Ganz , DP | Jarrett Fijal, editor | Description: The stars did indeed come out for this roller skating romp from pop star Jessica Simpson and director Brett Ratner. Joining Simpson on the outing are Christina Applegate, Eva Longoria and Christina Milian, while Andy Dick stars as a perverse rink worker — not to mention cameos by Ryan Seacrest and Maria Menounos. A recurring motif shows the private  thoughts and fantasies of some characters — thereby providing such memorable (or harrowing) scenes as a playful, lick-filled session between Simpson and Dick in a photobooth. All in all, it's a light-hearted affair that matches this tune, which is essentially a facsimile of  Madonna's "Holiday." -- watch "A Public Affair"

Description: Director Matt McDermitt uses both a little fire and ice to illustrate pop songstress Anna Nalick's tale of love gone bad in the video for "In The Rough." After merely dreaming of a break for freedom through an open window, Nalick finally acts on the impulse by standing up to her abusive man and then leaving him for good. The aforementioned fire rages behind Nalick as her anger gets worked up, while the freezing air that escapes from the ice box probably illustrates the steely cold emotions she summons up in order to erase their love letters from her memory.

NEW RELEASE: Weezer "We Are All On Drugs"

Rivers on drugs?Weezer "We Are All On Drugs" Geffen
Justin Francis, director
Skot Bradford, producer
HSI, production co
Description: Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo is seriously tripping in this video. He thinks that everyone he sees is lip-syncing his lyrics. Door to door proselytizers, a traffic cop, a soccer mom, the paperboy, a barber, a woman on TV: All of them are making the rocker very nervous. So nervous, in fact, that he's not paying attention when he accidentally gets smashed in the face by a wooden plank. Also not paying attention, however, is his ambulance driver who gets in an accident while taking him to the hospital. Something that's a bit unclear in the first part of the video is whether the people who chime in with the "on drugs" refrains are being confessional, or just taunting the rock 'n' roll lifestyle. Slight surreal touches (such as the water falling in the band's indoor performance room) and the fact that  the rocker is constantly greeted with dangerous incompetence seems to indicate that, yes, everybody is definitely on drugs.

Description: Jamiroqaui set the video world upside down with the amazing and award-winning "Virtual Insanity." In many ways, this video for "Feels Just like It Should" is bigger, better and definitely way weirder. Jamiroquai singer Jay Kay plays all of the main characters in an outlandish and very trippy street scene. The basic story is about a nebbishy dweeb who decides to lose his virginity. He visits a pimp named The Candy Man, who looks like some strange combination of The Joker and Jim Carrey's character from The Mask. Although The Candy Man eventually delivers a prostitute, he spends most of the video playing tricks on Jay Kay's mind. There are lots of special effects in the video, all of which are executed to perfection by effects shop X1FX, and several action-adventure sequences that are on-par with anything you've seen on the big screen lately. "Feels Just like It Should" is chock full of too many twists to describe here, so please visit the Jamrioquai site and watch the video all its glory.

NEW RELEASE: Stevie Wonder "So What The Fuss"

Stevie WonderStevie Wonder "So What The Fuss" Motown
Paul Hunter, director
Rubin Mendoza, producer
HSI production company
Harvey White, editor
Description: Stevie Wonder returns to the music scene with a sound that owes much to the hard funk of his best 1970s work. In other words, think "Living For The City," and not "I Just Called To Say I Love You."  The sound of Stevie and his band performing in a studio wafts through the ventilation ducts and inspires his neighbors to dance and have a good time.

As if a new Stevie Wonder release isn't noteworthy enough, this video is the first to be available with a descriptive track so that blind or visually-impaired viewers can know what's happening on-screen. Busta Rhymes narrates the descriptive track. And, to top it all off, the guitar work on this single is by Prince.

Description
: Joss Stone and her boyfriend have a spat outside an old-fashioned diner. They come close to reconciling once seated at a booth, but Stone storms out and drives away while her man follows in hot pursuit. The video's highlight is when the two battling lovers have a symbolic head-on collision in which they both get projected through car windshields as if they were participants in some sort of slow motion car crash ballet.
