Congratulations Mr Brown

The County would like to congratulate Thomas Brown of Newham District Scout Fellowship who has recently celebrated 80 years adult service to the movement!

Mr Brown, who is 99, joined West Ham North District (as was) in January 1928 and has served as a Leader, District Chairman and Scout Fellowship Member - indeed he still regularly attends Fellowship Meetings.

We all congratulate him on this remarkable achievement.

Twenty four adult members across London Region have been recognised for their outstanding service to Scouting with a very special award, unique to Greater London Scout Region. The adults were nominated by their respective County Commissioners for their commitment and service to Scouting in their County and will attend a special awards presentation hosted by Greater London Region on Monday 14 April 2008 at the Sunborn Yacht Hotel in Docklands. Presenting the awards to the worthy recipients will be Mr. Jack Petchey OBE and Regional Commissioner for Greater London Scout Region, Mr. Dean Milton.

New DC for East London

by Dean Jefferys, County Commissioner

I am pleased to announce that Alan Hands has been appointed as the new District Commissioner for East London as from 1st April 2008. Alan has had a long background in Scouting, having joined as a youth member in Tower Hamlets following a chance meeting with a local Scout Leader.

Alan Hands

Alan eventually became Group Scout Leader of the 4th Poplar, before leading the GLNE and GLN Contingent to the World Scout Jamboree in Thailand. In addition, Alan served as District Commissioner for Ilford NorthWest for five years and is currently Group Scout Leader of a Sea Scout Group in Ilford.

Alan brings with him a wealth of experience in all aspects of Scouting and is looking forward to being a unifying presence in East London. Alan was the favoured choice of the District Search Group and I am delighted that he has agreed to take on the position. He brings with him local knowledge, but he is also an outsider, having not being actively involved in the area for some years.

I am sure you will all join me in welcoming me to this key role and will give Alan your support as he works to grow and develop Scouting in East London.
