Did You Know?
After seeing The All Night Strut! in Toronto, Ella Fitzgerald burst into the dressing room scatting “It Don’t Mean A Thing If It Ain’t Got That Swing.” The cast didn’t skip a beat, joining her in an improvised jam.

Adapted by: Bro Herrod
Lyrics by: Barry Manilow
Music by: Barry Manilow
Adapted by Bro Herrod
Based on the world-famous melodrama by W.H.S. Smith

The original production was a play presented in 1844 at the Boston Museum and was written to capitalize on the flourishing Temperance Movement, which sought to wipe out alcoholic consumption in America. After 140 performances there (an astonishing record for those days), P.T. Barnum caught wind of it and presented it in the Moral Lecture Room (seating 2,000) at his American Museum in New York City, where it ran for 150 more performances. Barnum appeared between acts at the performances to lecture for Temperance. Many revivals followed, most notably in 1933 in Los Angeles, which ran for 29 years. In 1964, Bro Herrod and Barry Manilow lavished the classic with a full musical treatment, which was another great hit at New York's 13th Street Theatre. Bookwriter Herrod was director and Manilow executed songs, orchestrations and musical direction. A revised version by the same authors re-opened there on April 13, 1970. Manilow, of course, went on to become the pop music king of the 1970s and still sells millions of albums each year.
