As your local council we'll be involved with you through many events in your life - we'll register you when you're born, we'll be there when you go to school, some of you will work with us, we'll take away your rubbish and we'll be there to provide support if you need extra help in your life.

We work with various organisations - such as community representatives, faith organisations, the health service, police, colleges and businesses, all with the aim of making your life better.

Safer routes to school
The "Safer routes to school" project is a Salford City Council initiative which involves children and their parents in identifying problems on their routes between home and school.

Salford Care and Education Service
The Salford Care and Education Service aims to help improve the educational achievements of looked after children. We want to help everyone, no matter what their background, to make the most of their talents and help them to achieve their potential.

Salford Children's Fund
Salford Children's Fund is part of a Government strategy to tackle poverty and social exclusion, and to help children and young people fulfil their potential. The Salford Children's Fund supports services across the city that can give you a hand just when you need it. Contact us (details below) for more information.

Salford Community Leisure
The city council has set up a new not-for-profit organisation to manage leisure facilities across the Salford, called Salford Community Leisure Limited (SCL).

Salford Home Improvement Agency
Salford Home Improvement Agency can help you if you need repairs, adaptations or improvements to you home, enabling you to stay put in comfort and safety.

Salford LEA
There are 150 local education authorities (LEAs) in England which are responsible for the strategic management of local education services.

Salford Sioux
During the winter of 1887-88 hundreds of Oglala Sioux Indians – depicted in the 1990 film 'Dances with Wolves' – once settled in their teepees for six months on the cold and damp banks of the River Irwell in Salford.

Salford Sports Council
The Salford Sports Council was formed in 1974. It was re-launched in 2002 where it was agreed that all Salford based sports clubs affiliate to the Salford Sports Council.

Working with interested local authorities to determine needs in IT/IS auditing, filling gaps in their existing audit plans and addressing specific technical platforms or systems.

Salfordian Hotel
The hotel is run by the Salfordian Trust and caters mainly for older Salford residents and less mobile visitors but also welcomes other guests. Special rates are available for group bookings.

School admissions - nursery
Apply for nursery places for children from the age of 3 years in Community, Voluntary Controlled and Voluntary Aided Schools.

School admissions - primary
There are community primary schools, voluntary aided schools, voluntary controlled schools, special schools (for pupils with special educational needs) and early years centres. These pages will help you with the process of applying for a school place at a primary school, how to appeal if your child is refused admission, children with special needs.

Service voters
Members of the armed forces may register to vote at their home address just as a normal civilian elector or as a Service Voter . Service Voters are entitled to vote in Local, Parliamentary and European Parliamentary Elections in the UK.

Seven pledges
In 2002 Salford City Council made six pledges to all our local communities aimed at delivering the Council's mission statement which is "to create the best possible quality of life for the people of Salford". The number of pledges has now been increased to 7.

Skips
Any skip placed on the public highway requires a permit. This must be obtained by the supplying skip company prior to placing a skip on the road for you. We will need to assess the safety implications that may arise from the placing of the skip such as proximity to crossings or junctions, width of the road, etc.

Smoke pollution

Standing for election to the city council
A councillor represents their constituents and deals with their problems and questions irrespective of whether they have voted for them. As a councillor, you will act as a bridge between the public and the council. Councillors have the ultimate responsibility for how services are provided in the city of Salford. There will be a full council election in June 2004.

Statement of licensing policy (Licensing Act 2003)
The council has responsibility for licensing all premises in the city of Salford which sell alcohol, provide entertainment or sell hot food and drink between the hours of 11.00pm and 5am. The policy provides guidance to applicants, objectors and interested residents and businesses and the approach the licensing authority takes towards licensing.

Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council
Greater Manchester has ten local authorities and 2.5 million people in one city region. There is great richness in its cultural heritage and in the diverse mix of its community. This diversity is melded together by services, transport, business links and mutual opportunities. Salford is adjacent to the Borough of Warrington, part of the county of Cheshire.

Stray dogs
Each local authority has a duty to deal with stray dogs. Salford City Council has a contracted dog warden service to deal with many of the aspects of dog control, such as responsible dog ownership, dog fouling legislation and care of stray dogs.

Street cleansing
Salford City Council has a legal duty to clear litter and refuse from the public places for which it is responsible, such as streets, parks, playgrounds and pedestrianised areas. This includes the removal of abandoned vehicles and dead animals, as well as gritting roads and unblocking drains and sewers.

Street collections
Permission must be granted by the Local Authority before a street or house to house collection can take place.

Street lighting
The maintenance of street lighting in Salford is carried out by City Highways. The service can also be used to report damaged traffic signs and bollards.

Street naming in Salford
Salford City Council, as the statutory highway authority for the city, is responsible for the naming of streets and the numbering of property throughout Salford.

Street traders
