A breath of fresh air
in Hong Kong music scene

With a sexy, husky voice that turns ballads into love anthems, Eason Chan is beginning to charm a whole new generation of fans who can't seem to get enough of the latest singing sensation from Hong Kong.

The thing that strikes you most when talking to Eason Chan Yik Shun is that he has this cute guffaw everytime he thinks he says something funny about himself.

"At 24, this former architecture student has within the short span of three years made a name for himself as one of the most appealing voices in the Chinese music industry.

His debut in the Hong Kong music scene was like a breath of fresh air. Possessing a husky and sexy voice with a vocal range similar to Jacky's, his latest Cantonese album(My Happy Days) has won him numerous awards and rave reviews.

Eason's brand of Cantopop is neither soppy nor manufactured; it is very much in the tradition of Hong Kong rock band Beyond- a kind of alternative rock with mainstream treatment.

His problem- even up till now- seems to be his unwillingness to be a puppet to his record company that generally promotes an artiste through image makeover and other marketing ploys. With average looks and a very down-to-earth kind of personality, Eason would rather let his music speak for him. As a singer, Eason wants to try out various musical elements and wouldn't mind recording songs of different genres instead of just sticking to ballads for which he is now known for.

" I am crazy about singing. I don't think I'll ever get tired of singing, even when I grow old. I hope people buy my albums because they like my singing and understand my message as the effort in producing the album. I hope they are not buying my records because I'm good looking or I have a great body," says Eason.

" I have no problems with idol singers with pretty faces; I think they're capable of singing too. People are just too harsh towards them. As long as singer is sincere about singing and his songs touch people-he basically fullfills his role as a good singer."

What would Eason consider as his biggest career breakthrough? "
" No major breakthrough. If any, it has to be my voice, I suppose. I don't think I can dance or do I-intend to do a dance track just because I'm pressured. I just don't have the confidence at this stage. "

" I like rock music and I want to produce good pop music. The word 'pop' encompasses everything-rock, R&B;, alternative, etc.-that would constitute the 90's sound. I want to create a sound which people can identify as the 90s sound. Every decade has its unique sound."

In January, singers in Hong Kong get their due recognition in the form of music awards for the albums that they have release during the previous year. What has Eason got to say about this?

" Awards are not so important to me. To illustrate the point: Jacky Cheung is my idol, regardless of whether he wins any awards at the end of the year, I will still buy his records; I will still listen to his music. I have the entire recording of Jacky's albums. To me, he's the best. Actually, Jacky is my tennis partner too, do you know that? I would love to do a duet with him."

" One day, after I have written about 100 songs, I will select 10 of my favourite composition and release them as special album. As for an English album, I would like to do one but not at this stage."

" One thing that I would like to do is like what Harlem Yu has done in the States-an MTV unplugged kind of gig. That would be most satisfying."
