British acting legend Ray Winstone has jokingly brushed off the possibility of a fatherly EastEnders role.

It was rumoured that the 50-year-old Vincent star was in the running to play Archie Mitchell the mysterious father of Mitchell sisters Ronnie and Roxy, played by Sam Janus and Rita Simons respectively.

The actor, who is good friends with Janus, joked: "I'll play her fella but I'm not playing her dad!"

An EastEnders spokeswoman told DS: "There are no current plans for Archie Mitchell to appear in the show. The character, however, is mentioned in the scripts."

Since joining the BBC soap, the on-screen sisters have declared they would love to see a Hollywood star take on the role of their father.
