Luna Halo It's not a steel cage match — and it's not as cool as Scorpions "Rock You Like A Hurricane" —  but things are plenty dangerous in this video for Luna Halo. The band performs from a makeshift, electric fence cage. The contraption is not keep Luna Halo in captivity, but to keep the visiting hooligans from inflicting damage upon our rockers. In the end, the potential ass kickers bust through, thereby proving that an electric fence sign is not as effective a deterrent as actually electrifying the fence. --> watch "Untouchable"

PROFILE: Chris Milk, Radical Media

Hyperbole be damned, Chris Milk may very well be the most creative director working in music video today. And, when you consider that he tends to work with much more mainstream acts than many of his cutting edge peers and still gets away with his unexpected flights of fancy, it's all the more impressive. His output over the past year or so has included a performance video for Green Day and U2 that doubled as a powerful statement about our government's priorities, a story of a randy bug for Gnarls Barkley, and an epic Evel Kneivalization of Kanye West. Not surprisingly, he is nominated for Best Director honors at the 2007 MVPA Awards — being held Wednesday, May 16 in Los Angeles.

chris milkname: Chris Milk
company: @radical.media
job/title: director

First video: Chemical Brothers "Golden Path." Jennifer Heath [Milk's rep] convinced them to let me write. It seemed like a complete pipe dream. Then, to all of our surprise, they gave it to me. To their credit, Carole Fairbrother at Virgin and the Chems liked the treatment and gave me the job even though I had no videos on my reel.

Strangest Video: Courtney Love "Mono." My second video and her first as a solo artist. First meeting to go over the concept was in rehab. I'm not sure either of us were ready to make that video.

What's Next: Shooting a zero budget video for Travis right now. Feels like film school again. Fran Healy , the lead singer, and I shot with no permit in a park in Malibu last weekend. I was holding a light reflector disk with my teeth and one hand, and operating camera with the other. Would have been a piece of cake if not for the 40mph wind.

Working on some video/sculpture installation pieces, hopefully for some sort of eventual gallery exhibit.  Shooting more still photography.

Looking for a feature film script inspiring enough to devote the next few years of my life to.

NEW RELEASE: Christina Aguilera "Candyman"

hello, sailors Christina Aguilera does her best to boost troop morale in this video tribute to WWII USO shows, sockhops and soda shops. The singer plays a variety roles — with each one sexier than the last — as director Matthew Rolston pulls off some beauty shots that split the difference between sexy/tough Rosie The Riveter posters and a more chaste tribute to the pin-up work of artist Alberto Vargas. All in all, a perfect match to a song that recreates the vibe and style of the swing era hit "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy."--> watch "Candyman"

NEW RELEASE: U2 & Green Day "The Saints Are Coming"

U2 and Green Day You've got U2, Green Day and a live Monday Night Football performance at the first event to be held at the Superdome since Hurricane Katrina. Add in rehearsal and recording studio footage of the two bands collaborating on this Skids cover tune — with a dollop of the folk classic "House Of The Rising Sun" thrown in for good measure — and you realize that director Chris Milk doesn't have to do much more than point a camera in the bands' direction to make this compelling. That's exactly what he does for the first half, until he takes things to the next level by utilizing a clever pretense to depict what should have been the government's response to the tragedy. --> watch "The Saints Are Coming"

NEW RELEASE: Jay-Z "Show Me What You Got"

Jay-Z It's hard to think of a better way to top off a career than Jay-Z's swan song, "99 Problems." Produced by original rap/rock architect Rick Rubin and boasting a tour de force video directed by Mark Romanek, "99 Problems" was rightfully hailed as a masterpiece. Jay-Z's comeback video, "Show Me What You Got" has much more in common with the "babes and bling" clips that came before his crowning achievement. Riding the same sax line as Wreckz-N-Effect's "Rump Shaker," the video begins with Jay-Z zoom-a-zoom-zoom-zooming around the Grand Prix streets of Monaco in a fast-paced race. Of course, smart man that he is, Jay leaves the dangerous driving to NASCAR star Dale Earnhardt and Indy car racer Danica Patrick. The scene then shifts to the ocean for some speedboat follies and then an exclusive mansion party where the rap star shows the upper hand in a blackjack game and everything else he attempts. -- watch "Show Me What You Got" Real/Windows Media at Rocafella.com (registration required) or check it out at YouTube

NEW RELEASE: Gnarls Barkley "Gone Daddy Gone"

Gnarls Barkley One reference point for this new Gnarls Barkley video is surely the Pixar animated tale A Bug's Life , but in terms of the concept and good old fashioned perversion, it's more closely related to the '70s porn classic Autobiography of A Flea. Gnarl's Barkley singer Cee-Lo is portrayed as a horny flea, jamming out this Violent Femmes cover with his insect band within the cozy confines of a dog's fur. A quick scratch sends them tumbling to the carpet, where Flea-Lo catches a glimpse of a gorgeous housewife who becomes his new host of choice. Unfortunately, the attempted journey up her skirt is cut short and they all fall prey to a blast of insecticide. Oh, well. At least our hero is able to enjoy the last moments of life in a narcotic haze, dreaming of a world where a relationship between a flea and a beautiful woman doesn't have to be the love that dare not speak its name. -- watch "Gone Daddy Gone"

IN DEPTH: Aberdeen City "God Is Going To Sick Of Me"

God Is Going To Sick Of Me Rock critic Simon Reynolds sums up the credo of post-punk with the title of his recent book about the early years of the genre, Rip It Up And Start Again. That sentiment literally informs this Aberdeen City video, which looks to be constructed of moving images ripped out of various magazines, photographs and posters. Adam Neustadter — who co-directed the video with Pete McCoubrey under the Wormseye banner — takes us in depth on Aberdeen City's "God Is Going To Get Sick Of Me":

The idea was to make a moving collage that had a handmade feel to it, like a school art project. It's supposed to feel like a living scrapbook. We used about eight different cameras — ranging from HD all the way down to a Fisher Price pixelvision camera that records on audio cassette tape — that all shot at once. On the set of God Is Going To Sick Of Me We used all these different formats so each piece of the collage would have it's own unique look. We shot each band member individually, changing wardrobe, instruments, and backdrops each take for more variety. Having all these different elements, we were able to construct the edit to build with the song. Ron Patane and Peter McCoubrey of Wormseye shared editing duties and did all the effects work. Mark DePace of Ghost Robot produced, and Aaron Phillips was DP. -- Adam Neustadter, Wormseye

The most impressive bits include a hyper her humpssurreal marching band performance, a white space segment where Missy's body is replaced by a still bodacious stick figure ,and a section where Missy is seamlessly inserted into the film so she can show of her own acrobatic ability at a gymnastics competition. "Touch The Sky"
(Roc-A-Fella/Island Def Jam)

Chris Milk, director | Janice Biggs, producer | @radical.media, production co | Danny Hiele, DP | Livio Sanchez @ The Whitehouse, editor
Description: On September 8, 1974, Evel Kneivel attempted to jump the Snake River Canyon in a custom made and largely untested rocket-propelled Skycycle. It was a nearly fatal disaster, that presumably put the kibosh on Knievel's never attempted dream of clearing the Grand Canyon. So, leave it to the most adventurous duo in music video — director Chris Milk and rap star Kanye West — to attempt it in an epic and captivating clip that works perfectly on several levels.

PamyeCombining the look of a 1970's feature film with the classic ABC Wide World Of Sports series, the video casts Kanye as Evel Knievel doppelganger Evel Kanyevel,Pamela Anderson as his love interest and Nia Long as one of the women who calls Kanye on his crap. The jump itself follows the same sad trajectory of Knievel's Snake River attempt, but there is that magical moment when Kanye does indeed "Touch The Sky." Let's hope for a sequel with a shark tank. -- watch the director's cut of  "Touch The Sky"

Luke McCoubrey, DP
Peter McCoubrey, editor
Description: There aren't many rock bands that can be easily summed up in one word, and of those, Moringwood is the only one that lays claim to the word "fun." This second video off the NYC band's self-titled debut album is a romp through a used record bin. Each album pulled from the crate  comes to life  with Morningwood appearing in whatever guise appropriate to the album's band or genre. Singer Chantal Claret and her bandmates don full-on metal gear to evoke a typical metal album cover (think Manowar, if you must), disco duds for a nod to the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack record, plus homages to albums from The Ramones, Kraftwerk, Master P and much, much more.
    Although this isn't the first album cover music video homage  — The Shins recreated several indie rock album covers in "New Slang" and director Phil Harder created similar works for Cornershop's "Brimful Of Asha" and Liz Phair's "Why Can't I" — visual effects studio Guava and directors Peter McCoubrey and Adam Neustadter of Wormseye Films deliver something that's both unique from those earlier videos and fun enough to stand up to the enthusiastic bombast of Morningwood. NEW RELEASE: Korn "Twisted Transistor"

KornKorn "Twisted Transistor" Virgin
Dave Meyers, director
Bill Boyd, producer
@radical.media, production co
Scott Meyer, editor
Description: Most directors would have been content to just play out the simple premise that drives this video: Cast a roster of top-name rap stars to play the roles of Korn and film the performance. Easy. Clever. Done. Director Dave Meyers, however, takes that idea and builds it up into a rock video parody that's one of the funniest and most entertaining videos you'll see all year. The casting of Lil Jon as singer Jonathan Davis, Snoop Dogg as guitarist Munky, Xzibit as bassist Fieldy and David Banner as drummer David Silvera is pure genius. But, this video would work even if it starred Korn as themselves. "Twisted Transistor" is primarily an homage to Spinal Tap as a documentary crew captures all the ridiculous travails that a rock band faces on the road. There are lots of breaks for comedic dialogue and, in a nod to Animal House, there's even an ending "where are they now" segment. There are many potshots taken at Korn's expense, not to mention a few barbs thrown at their old label and some notable industry figures. I'd encourage you to buy the video on iTunes, but it's not available there (yet). So, watch it for free courtesy of Korn.com in either Real or Windows.

Description: Sia's trip-hop elegy "Breathe Me" served as the musical swan song to HBO's epic TV series Six Feet Under. The incredibly moving final sequence to the show imbued a lot of meaning and emotional relevance to this song and vice versa. This official video lacks the same punch, but that's an unfair comparison, since the TV finale played upon emotions and familiarities that were built up over several years. The video shows Sia quickly flipping through a series of Polaroid pictures of herself and others at a high enough speed that it becomes a kind of animated flip-book.

AudioslaveAudioslave "Doesn't Remind Me" Epic/Interscope
Chris Milk, director
Samantha Storr, producer
@radical.media, production co
Danny Hiele, DP
Livio Sanchez, editor
Description: "Doesn't Remind Me" is an example of the old saying that "The personal is political."  This video is essentially a distillation of something that seems hugely political and severely complex into a small, simple and personal story. The video follows a boy whose interests in toy fighter planes and becoming a boxing champ like Rocky seem utterly commonplace, until we learn that his father was shot down in a fighter plane while flying over Iraq. So, although it may be hard to understand all the complexities of war, it's quite easy to understand an angry child's desperation and confusion over the loss of a dad, especially in a war that many consider to be unnecessary. Adding to the power of the video is the omission of any Audioslave footage, thereby allowing the story to be the complete focus. Chalk this up as another confrontational and potentially controversial video from director Chris Milk. Watch "Doesn't Remind Me" courtesy of Audioslave.com in either Real or Windows.

SHOT: Korn - Dave Meyers, director

Korn may have undergone a line-up change in the time between their last release and See You On The Other Side, their first album under a new deal with Virgin Records, but it's nowhere near as drastic as it looks in their upcoming video. "Twisted Transistor" will star Snoop Dogg, Xzibit, Lil Jon and David Banner in place of the members of Korn. Full details on the video can be found at both Billboard and MTV.com.

NEW RELEASE: Dave Matthews Band "Dream Girl"

Julia + DaveDave Matthews Band "Dream Girl" RCA
Dave Meyers, director
Janice Biggs, producer
Radical Media, production co
Description: "Dream Girl" is a videos that is essentially a dream within a dream within a dream within a dream. Adding another of obfuscation is that everything takes place within a movie that Dave Matthews watches on the big screen. Actress Julia Roberts is the focal point of the movie/dream, as she moves through various locations and flashes between her childhood and present age. In every scene she's frightened by a shadowy man in a suit. In the end she finally confronts the mystery man only to find that it's the love of her life, played by Dave Matthews himself. All the members of DMB have cameo roles throughout the video, holding their own in scenes with the movie star.

Post production company Kroma provided the visual effects in the video, including the impressive masking effect that erased  Matthews' face so he could play the "mystery man" role.

NEW RELEASE: Morningwood "Jetsetter"

MorningwoodMorningwood "Jetsetter" Capitol
Wormseye, directors
@radical.media, production co
Description: Morningwood singer Chantal Claret takes a monster riff to the next level through sheer enthusiasm and attitude. Oh, and tits. Did I mention tits? Claret appears in a series of set pieces that each transition smoothly to the next. First she's in her bedroom writing a letter and then she's jetting to join her band in performance. Once on stage she loses control and let's it all hang out, thereby resulting in a nice homage to jailhouse rock.
