Vikings sign LB Pope

The Vikings landed their fifth free agent today, signing linebacker Derrick Pope to a one-year contract.

Pope appeared in 55 games in four seasons with the Miami Dolphins and has experience at all three linebacker positions in addition to special teams.

He said he's not sure what his role will be with the Vikings but that he's ready for whatever they have in mind.

"I feel like I fit well into the defensive scheme," he said. "They have a great defense. I'm just ready to be part of a winning team."

Pope is expected to fill the backup role formerly held by Dontarrious Thomas, who signed with San Francisco as a free agent.

Note: Defensive end James Hall, who was released by St. Louis at the start of free agency, is visiting Winter Park today.

dartanion:

IT'S ABOUT TIME WE BROUGHT A DE IN FOR A VISIT!!!

YEEHAW!

Megdi:

He's not that impressive....All that waiting for this????
Gotta be kidding me

Michael In Maine :

This is a solid signing... Remember he's coming in as a backup and special teams player, NOT a starter... He has solid #'s, likes to play Special Teams, and is familiar with all 3 Linebacker spots. A solid Signing. If we could now get either James Hall or K Edwards at DE and lock up Robert Ferguson that would solidify many weaker positions.

Megdi:

Yeah, Pope is a good signing. But, James Hall's #s are not really that good. We need a solid DE, not just anyone.....K Edwards from the Lions would be a much better pick up.

the vike:

TRADE FOR JULIUS PEPPERS
THATS THE ONLY THING U NEED TO DO VIKES.. AND LETS GO TO THE SUPER BOWL

Cluvviks:

Guys, remember you need good players for back-ups,special teams or in case of injury. Good signing viks, real good signing.

Mangalar:

Why is no one talking about trading for Jason Taylor out of Miami. He wants out, lets go after him, and see if they want a trade offer.

dbressler:

Someone will get J Taylor in a trade within a week before the draft for a 3rd rd pick...we have 2 3rd round picks...are we playing?

chilii:

Viking fans are delusional.

JM:

People need to go back and watch the some of the Lions games where James Hall created a lot of chaos for McKinnie.

Dylster:

Come on Vikes, Julius Peppers is the answer for now and the future. He has a good 8 season left in him. Remember Reggie White to the Packers? What a great move for them, and Reggie. Can you say Julius Peppers to Minnesota? Maybe I'm not remembering right. Did the Packers win the Super Bowl that year they got Reggie White? What do the Vikings need a 1st round pick for now? They got Bernard Berrian and Sidney Rice as the starting receivers, and Bobby Wade in the slot. Carolina would take our 1st round pick for Peppers.

the voice of reason:

Why push for Peppers? He had 2.5 sacks last year in 14 games. No thanks. The way some of you people are talking about these signings, it's as if there were no draft. Most PROS are saying the Vikes have been one of the better teams during this free agency period, but some of you cacklers are whining that they haven't worked out trade deals for LT, Jesus, Red Grange, and a young Lawrence Taylor. What do you expect?

By my count, they've now upgraded 2 starting spots and 3 backups/special teams positions. That's 5 roster spots that have improved in talent, attitude, or age.

I say, 'Nice job!'.

jhipstle:

some one touched on it earlier go after Peppers. Team him with williams bro and we have the pass rushing def we've lacked for some time

jhipstle:

Okay i have one for you all. What about the QB situation? Here is what i think needs to happen. Bench T-Jack he can't do the job. Go after Quinn Gray...yes i said Quinn Gray he played real well when he came in when Garaud went down.

BigMoInAZ:

I'm with yah Dylster!

Juan :

Hey voice of reason, im sure your not a real football fan cus just because julius peppers had 2.5 sacks last season doesnt mean he aint the answer for our first round pick. member DE's need a few years to get used to the tempo of the game. Peppers is 28 and has had 56 career sacks in 6 years thats and average of 9.3 sacks a season. that better than both our de's together, and you think a rookie DE is goin to put up them numbers? dont be lame yo. i think we should DEFINATLEY get that done.

Anonymous:

Put down the mariJUANa!

Peppers is done. Mark my words, he'll never pull more than 5 sacks in a year from here on out.

As for your bag on rookie DE's, what about these names:

Doleman
Millard
Randle
Kevin Williams

Overpaying for a player who's career is on the downslide is not answer.

They have 4 picks in the first three rounds. Give them a chance.

T.J.:

Good idea to get some depth on defense! I'm glad they are finally pulling in a DE, but I really hope that the rumor of getting Julius Peppers works out. Sure he had a less than par last season, but imagine him next to the Williams wall....oh so sweet.

dakota:

Julius peppers all the way

We almost got eugen wilson :[

I hope the deagalo hall deal with the raiders dosent get done so we can sign him :]
