LONDON, UK: The Prime Minister, Sir Michael Somare, today presented her Majesty Queen Elisabeth II with the sovereign's Badge of the Orders of Papua New Guinea.

In his address to her Majesty, Sir Michael said, "The Government and People of Papua New Guinea are honoured that Your Majesty has consented to serve as Sovereign and Head of the Orders of Papua New Guinea – our own national honours system.

Sir Michael informed her Majesty that HRH The Princess Royal presented the first awards of the Orders during her visit to Papua New Guinea that coincided with the 30th Independence anniversary celebrations.

Sir Michael said, "Her RH and Admiral Timothy Laurence were warmly received by the people of Papua New Guinea, and we are grateful to Your Majesty for sending her Royal Highness and her husband to help us mark three decades of Nationhood.

"We were delighted to confer on Her Royal Highness the award of Grand Companion of the Order of Logohu and on Admiral Laurence the Companion of the Order of the Star of Melanesia – both awards being the highest honours in their respective Orders under our own National Honours and Awards System.

Sir Michael also presented her Majesty with insignia sets of the Grand Companion of the Orders of Logohu for The Duke of Edinburgh and His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales– that carry the title of "Chief".

Sir Michael said these awards indicate the continued relationship between Papua New Guinea and Her Majesty as the Sovereign, and with the Royal Family.
