Steamrail Victoria is a Voluntary Not-For-Profit organisation dedicated to the restoration and operation of vintage steam, diesel and electric locomotives and carriages. We operate all over the Victorian broad gauge network offering a variety of tours for all tastes. We run regular day and occasional weekend tours to interesting and popular destinations.
Established in 1965, Steamrail current has a fleet of six operating steam locomotives, six operating diesel locomotives and one electric locomotive, as well as a fleet of suburban electric 'red rattlers' and 'dogboxes'.
The Steamrail carriage fleet comprises of some thirty cars, including sitting, sleeping and specialist vehicles, with enough 115km/h and air conditioned cars to allow longer day tours. Some vehicles date back to the early 20th century and feature comfortable seating, varnished wood paneling and opening windows. Trains have a buffet car with a licensed bar.
Our workshops are located in part of the heritage railway workshops at Newport. These facilities date back to the 1880's and were actually the birthplace of many of our locomotives and rolling stock. These facilities enable us to carry out restorations and overhauls on our fleet to keep up the one hundred year old vehicles in regular operation.
