SuperCat attacks Philippine ferry standards.

Date: Sunday, May 1 2005

Fast ferry operator SuperCat Fast Ferry Corp has criticised Philippine maritime authorities, saying that they compromise the safety of fast ferries in the domestic trade by allowing the entry of substandard vessels.

While the Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) required fast ferries to be classed by an IACS-member class society, SuperCat alleged that it did not act against companies

operating non-classed fast ferries.

It cited the previous operations of two high-speed craft with crewmembers not properly licensed on the Batangas-Calapan route, which it said Marina had allowed. In another case, SuperCat said Marina also allowed a non-class fast ferry to be operated on the same route when there was no market justification.
