PNOC EC is the only Filipino partner to the upstream component of the largest single industrial investment in Philippine history, the Malampaya Deep Water Gas-to-Power Project. Malampaya heralds the birth of the country's natural gas industry and enables the supply of at least 2,700 megawatts of power through a clean and environment-friendly fuel for a period of at least 20 years starting 2002.
The upstream component of the US$4.5 billion Malampaya gas-to-power project was jointly developed by Shell Philippines Exploration B.V. (SPEX), ChevronTexaco and PNOC EC. The project was formally inaugurated on October 16, 2001 and effectively increased the Philippines' energy self-sufficiency level to 52%.
Malampaya is expected to provide substantial long-term revenue of between US$8-10 billion to the Philippine government over its life span, in addition to foreign exchange savings of the same magnitude. It is a national flagship project of the Philippine government under the auspices of the Department of Energy.
The Malampaya Project currently provides the gas fuel requirements of its three power plant customers in Batangas, namely: Santa Rita (1,000 MW), San Lorenzo (500 MW), Ilijan (1,200 MW), and Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation (PSPC).
