Durham, NC - As Duke prepared to protect its undefeated, 6-0 record and No. 1 national ranking against likewise unbeaten arch-rival North Carolina, another record hung in the balance.

Senior Zack Greer, hot on the trail of Gary Gait's all-time NCAA goals record of 192, entered the contest against the Tar Heels with 156 career goals in his 53-game career, placing him in a three-way tie for first in Duke history with Dave Hagler and Peter Rubin. Seven minutes into the second quarter, he would claim the record as his own.

There's just one thing: he didn't even know it. There was noticeably no announcement over the PA, despite the fact that they were playing at Duke's own Koskinen Stadium.

Not that this is likely to bother Greer, who seemed surprised, though nonchalant, when told about the record he'd just grabbed, saying, "I didn't even know. I don't know. We beat Carolina, doubled them up. I got nothing for you, I don't know."

This humility displayed by Greer left teammate Dan Loftus to sing his praises.

"Zack is a great player," said Loftus. "Years down the road I'm going to look back and say that I had the privilege to play with him. He's such a great player, a great finisher. He's a complete player.

"From the second he stepped on campus I knew he was going to be great, but in the four years that he's been here he's made himself into a complete player, and I think that showed today."

Greer wasn't alone in having the news broken to him after the fact, via the press.

"We never discuss these things in practice, we've never discussed them in meetings, and it's just something that we just don't even talk about," said Head Coach John Danowski, adding, "So you telling me that is the first I'm hearing it."

Greer went on to score four more goals before the game was through, putting his career mark at 161. The record Greer and Coach Danowski are most, and perhaps singularly, concerned with however - Duke's win-loss record - now stands at an impressive 7-0. They'll try to make it 8-0 on Tuesday night, the 18th, against the visiting Colgate Raiders.
