How I Met Your Mother and Big Bang Theory are switching slots

Mother at barInteresting news out of CBS this morning. On the heels of renewing The Big Bang Theory last week, the network has now announced that when Bang returns with new episodes on March 17, it will be leading off the night. How I Met Your Mother, in its third year, is also returning with new shows that night, but will be taking over Bang's 8:30 slot. On a side note, The New Adventures of Old Christine will be replaced by new episodes of Rules of Engagement on Monday, April 14.

CBS has a solid sitcom block from 8:00 to 10:00 on Mondays, with only Two and a Half Men locked in to the 9:00 slot. Bang has averaged 8.36 million viewers since it premiered last September. By comparison, Mother has pulled in an average of 8.02 million viewers over the same few months. Presumably, by flipping the two shows, CBS will be able to determine whether it's the show or the time slot that's dictating slight difference in the Nielsen numbers.

I think CBS is just looking for an excuse to drop HIMYM and this might be it.

I can't stand Rules of Engagement! Who watches that?!? Probably the people who keep 2 1/2 Men on the air. Yuck! Hopefully Christine will win over in the end.

Beth you seem to have major issues with men. I feel sorry for the men in your life. I would bet you aren't married. I hope Christine isn't your role model for living your life. lol

@Laughing: I hope you don't take TV shows so seriously that what you watch has to dictate how you lead your life. Besides, both shows Beth indicated she didn't like aren't very good shows, so I say props to her!

Paul where in my post did I come across as though I let TV shows deicate how I live my life? I believe you are projecting your issues onto me. You took offense by what I said to Beth for some reason. I must have hit a nerve. I believe you're the one that lives your life by what you watch on TV.

Works for me, now I can just stay at work a half hour later on Monday nights, instead of having to hurry home and then reading or surfing the internet for a half hour after HIMYM.

I see this as going back to HIMYM year one when they were gunning for a more maturer audience. A lead in show for the #1 rated comedy series Two and a half men is a good thing IMO.

I think 2 1/2 Men is the worst show on Television. I like the premise and the stories are funny. But the delivery and timing by the entire cast is terrible. Loved Charlie Sheen in "Wall Street" but loathe him in this show. I hope HIMYM gets at least another season. While I think its been a fun ride, I would like to see the writers actually get to the point of the show. And I think Christine is a much funnier show than 2 1/2 Men. They all have great timing and the Christine character and her brother Matthew have an comedically awkward relationship. This is true comedy.

Maybe the people who watch Big Bang at 8:30 will see what a good sitcom looks like, and they'll just switch to HIMYM permanently. That'll be 16 million viewers! But seriously, if CBS doesn't at least give HIMYM another season to at least wrap up the story, I'll be PO'ed. CBS missed the opportunity to expand HIMYM's audience last year when they shot it down for the post Superbowl slot. That alone tells me they don't like it. It has more of a narrative so maybe it doesn't repeat as well.

I used to be a big fan of HIMYM, but since the last couple of seasons, it's dropped way off my radar.

In fact I love Big Bang Theory for it's fresh approach to the same type of jokes and storylines. Something the other show seemed to forget about.

And lastly... I actually like Rules of Engagement as well. I love the delivery of Patrick Warburton. It could use a little tweaking, namely loosing David Spade's character, but overall I find it fun.

Both shows are excellent, I just wish CBS would stop screwing with HIMYM and add it for next season - the show is Hilarious and gets better by the second. As for those who don't like 2.5 Men, I guess you just don't understand. Add Christine to the mix and that is 2 solid hours of Comedy on Monday night!!!

Christine bores me, and unfortunately I don't find HIMYM at all attractive anymore. I used to watch every episode twice, but now I usually don't even watch it once. The dynamic has just become old, and there really isn't any plot with Lily/Marshal resolved and the revelation of who "mother" is presumably nowhere in sight.

2.5 Men has two levels of comedy to it, one which is low brow and one which is much more subtle. I find the subtle stuff doesn't work a lot, but overall I think its a workable comedy.
Rules of Engagement is good because of Patrick Warburton. I generally like David Spade but can't stand him in this though. He should be replaced by someone else, particularly because his "I'm a lech" character he plays everywhere is starting to become less funny and more creepy.

I really can't stand to watch the big bang theory and I'm surprised that it is a moderate hit, but it seems to be performing ratings wise like The class did. How i met your mother is a great show, two and half men, I don't get. rules of engagement is hilarious, but the real cbs jewel is The Adventures of Old Christine -- you want a great sitcom, check this one out again if you have to-- guaranteed laughs.

Not as impressed by Big Bang. I think 2 1/2 men is terrible. I love HIMYM: it isn't always good, but when it is, it's really good. Even when it isn't good, there are a few things sprinkled here or there that make me want to watch, because the characters are so fun.

HIMYM was orginially on at 8:30.

I don't think this is a bad move... I think it did better at 8:30 than 8 anyway... I never was able to catch the first five minutes because I was busy with putting babes to bed and such.
