Arkansas hires coach; Bubas elected to Hall
Creighton coach Dana Altman was hired Monday as Arkansas coach, replacing Stan Heath.
The same day, Heath was hired at South Florida.
Altman, 48, went 260-141 in 13 seasons at Creighton. The Bluejays finished 22-11 this season, their ninth straight with at least 20 victories, a Missouri Valley Conference record.
Altman is 343-208 in 18 seasons in Division I.
Heath, fired after going 21-14 this season, agreed to a five-year contract at South Florida. Including incentives, the deal is worth up to $4.275 million.
Heath, 42, replaces Robert McCullum, who was fired after losing 28 of 32 conference games in the school's first two seasons in the Big East. Heath went 82-71 record in five seasons at Arkansas.
HALL OF FAME: Former Duke coach Vic Bubas and Blue Devils player Dick Groat were selected for the second class of the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in Kansas City, Mo.
Bubas took Duke to three Final Four berths in the 1960s and went 213-67 in 10 seasons. Groat was a two-time All-America in the early '50s and later a major league baseball star.
Former Maryland coach Lefty Driesell, a Duke graduate, also was selected to the Hall of Fame. Others in the 12-man class were former coaches Adolph Rupp (Kentucky), Hank Iba (Oklahoma State), Phog Allen (Kansas), Guy Lewis (Houston), John McLendon (Tennessee State) and Norm Stewart (Missouri), and players Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (UCLA), Dick Barnett (Tennessee State) and Austin Carr (Notre Dame).
IOWA: Butler coach Todd Lickliter was hired as Steve Alford's replacement.
Lickliter, voted Division I coach of the year by the National Association of Basketball Coaches, went 29-7 this season. He was 131-61 in six years at Butler and made four trips to the NCAA tournament.
Alford is now at New Mexico.
MICHIGAN: The Wolverines were negotiating with West Virginia coach John Beilein to replace Tommy Amaker, a person close to the team said. West Virginia won the NIT title this season.
WOMEN
DUKE: Senior guard Lindsey Harding was named the Naismith Trophy women's player of the year. She previously was named ACC player and defensive player of the year and won the Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award as the best player 5-feet-8 or shorter.
ARIZONA STATE: Coach Charli Turner Thorne's contract was extended through the 2011-12 season. Arizona State finished a school-best 31-5 this season and reached the Greensboro Regional final.
