David Copperfield

The magician and illusionist David Copperfield has performed some of the most amazing illusions in the history of magic. Born to perform in 1956, he was raised in New Jersey and began his professional magic career at twelve years old. By the time he was nineteen, Copperfield was the headline act in a Honolulu hotel. He was the youngest magician ever to be accepted into the Society of American Magicians. David has a respect for the history of magic and has a large collection of magic props and memorabilia that he displays in a museum in Las Vegas.

The breathtaking illusions that made David Copperfield a household name have enthralled fans, causing endless debate as to how such effects could be achieved. He actually made the Statue of Liberty disappear on live television! This spectacle was created by the illusionist Jim Steinmeyer. David’s other feats include levitating over the Grand Canyon and walking through the Great Wall of China. His flying routine, which includes inviting a member of the audience to fly with him, was created by John Gaughan.

David Copperfield is naturally a popular guest on many shows and has done numerous television specials. Talk show hosts love to have him as a guest and he has appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, the Late Show with David Letterman, Late Night with Conan O Brien, The Tony Danza Show, and Ellen: The Ellen DeGeneres Show. He was also a guest on An Audience with Elton John.

David Copperfield has also appeared on the big screen. In the 1980 horror movie, Terror Train, he played Ken the magician. Directed by Roger Spottiswoode, it co-starred Ben Johnson, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Hart Bochner. He also made an unaccredited appearance as himself in the star studded Prêt-a-Porter. The renowned Robert Altman directed and Sophia Loren, Kim Basinger, Anouk Aimee, and Rupert Everett starred.

In 1997, David Copperfield appeared in a documentary called Michael Jackson: HIStory on Film – Volume II. In addition to Jackson, there was a long list of fellow guests, including Paula Abdul, Rosanna Arquette, Dan Aykroyd, Richard Dreyfuss, Danny Glover, and Whoopi Goldberg.

Real life presented a challenge to David Copperfield recently when he was held up by a gang of armed teenagers. David remained calm and used his skill to trick the robbers. He pulled out his pockets to show them he had nothing in them, but he had actually made his cell phone, wallet, and passport disappear!

There has been a lot of media interest in the love life of David Copperfield, especially into his six year relationship with supermodel Claudia Schiffer. After becoming engaged, they split in 1999.
